Notes / Documentation:

Friederich Otto HARTMANN From his Minnesota newspaper obituary: "Fred Hartmann, Sr., died April 18 (1932), at the age of 90 years at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Otto LOHMANN, of Northrop. He was in failing health for the last few months. Death was caused by old age. He was born at Rodenberg, Hessen, Germany, May 30, 1841. As a young man he came to America in the early spring of 1866. He was united in marriage to Dorothy MATHIAS the following year, Nov. 5, 1867, in Chicago, Illinois. They lived on a farm at Beecher, Ill., for 19 years. In the year 1886 they came to Martin county and settled on a farm in Section 3, Rutland Township. He held the offices as township supervisor and school board member for a number of years. He was one of the founders of the East Rutland Lutheran church which was built 40 years ago. His life was an example of Christianity and all who knew him spoke highly of him as a friend and neighbor. In 1910 he quit farming and moved to Northrop and lived there until the death of his wife, who died July 1, 1921. After the death of his wife he made his home with several of his children, Mrs. C.H. MITTELSTAEDT of Northrop, then later with his son, Frank HARTMANN of Rutland. In his last years he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Otto LOHMANN of Northrop. The union was blessed with 10 children. The seven surviving are: Mrs. Otto LOHMANN and Mrs. C.H. MITTELSTAEDT of Northrop, Mrs. Fred DREWES of Des Plaines, Ill., Henry HARTMANN of Northrop, Fred and Frank HARTMANN of Rutland and Ernest HARTMANN near Fairmont. Three children died in infancy. Besides the children he is mourned by 40 grand children and 38 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the East Rutland Lutheran church, April 21, conducted by Rev. C.C. Metz. The pallbearers were six grand children as follows: Walter and Alfred MITTELSTAEDT of Chaska Minn., Martin HARTMANN, Fred, Elmer and Gerhardt HUEMOELLER of Northrop." Other notes: Friederich's obituary lists his birth place as Rodenberg, Hessen. From Herr Liebezeit, we learn he was actually born in the village of Algesdorf, political district of Rodenberg, region of Schaumburg, Hessen. Pat Mount indicates there were several Hartmann and Matthias families who immigrated from Schaumburg and also settled in Will County, IL. Schaumburg, in the 1850's was a detached part of the state of Hessen (Kurhessen--see letter from H. Piepenbrink). His parents were Johann Carl Friederich Hartmann and Catherine Sophia Charlotte nee Mergell. He was baptized on 6 Jun 1841 and confirmed on 15 Apr 1855, most likely at St. Jacobi Ev. Lutheran Church, in Rodenberg. Fred travelled from Bremen on the ship "SS Europa," arriving in New York on 5 June 1866. "Germans to America" lists a 24 year old farmer from Hessen, destined for Illinois. On board also was the Matthias family, including his future wife, Dorothea, her parents and her younger brother. No record has as yet been found of his marriage. The date is found in Friederich's obituary, but it does not match with the birth date of his first child. Friederich is not listed in the 1870 Census of Washington Township, Will Co., IL. The family is listed in the 1880 Census as living in Washington Township, including Dorothea's mother, Maria Matthias. (Beecher is in Washington Twp.) All the German-born family members list their country of origin as Hessian--the same for their parents. 1880 Census, dated 8 June 1880: Washington Twp.. Illinois Fred Hartman 38 Farmer Dorothea 36 Keeping house Caroline 13 At school Henry 12 " Mary 10 " Sophie 10 " Fred 5 John 3 mo Mary Matthias 66 Mother-in-law Note that this places the birth of Caroline in the same year as Friederich & Dorothea married. Also note that Maria and Sophia were twins. Cemetery records for St. Paul's (one mile north of Beecher) include two children, Louise and Johann, who both died in 1880 and may well be Friederich's. Friederich was naturalized in the Will County Court (Joliet, IL) on 1 November 1872 (Cert. Vol.-A P-11) According to the "Martin County History," the Hartmanns moved to Minnesota in 1886, but did not actually homestead until 1890. "They bought the N.E. 160 acres of prairie and water from the railroad company for seven dollars per acre. As was most often the situation, these relocating families first lived with relatives or friends. The Hartmanns were taken in by two bachelor brothers living in a cottage on Elm Creek while they built their sod home nearby." One of the two brothers, C. Herman Mittlested, would later become the husband of Friederich & Dorothea's oldest daughter, Caroline (Lena). The Census of 1900 confirms birth/immigration information and has the family living in Rutland Township. Parents & Fred (age 25), plus the twins Frank & Ernst (age 12). In Minnesota, Lena married C. Herman Mittlestedt. Heinrich (Henry) married Betina Drewes and then her sister, Sophie Drewes. Maria married Fred Huemoeller and later Otto Lohmann. Sophia Angel married Heinrich Friederich Drewes, brother of Betina & Sophie. Friederich C. married Gertrude Fiedler and then her sister, Bertha. John must have died before 1900--as did two other children, names unknown (see above). The twins, Frank and Ernst, were born in Minnesota. From Ruth Wokash, quoting the St. James Lutheran Church Record: "1892-- Mr. Fred Hartmann Sr. donated 3 acres of land in Section 3 of the N.E. corner of Rutland Township (Martin Co., MN). The main part of the church was built that year and dedicated in the fall." The Diamond Anniversary Book of St. James mentions him prominently. From Rodenberg, Schaumburg, we have received notice that a Friedrich Wilhelm Hartmann was born there in 1836. Could he be related to our family? See: Obituary, Death Certificate, "Germans to America, Vol.17," Herr Liebezeit's Report, Naturalization Certificate, 1880 Census, Martin County History Book, 1900 Census, St. James Lutheran Church Book, photographs of family, homestead and cemetery.
