BATES, blacksmith and wagon making, Channahon; the subject of this sketch was born in Penobscot Co., Maine, Sept. 16, 1830. He married Miss Nancy N. HUTCHINS (formerly Miss KNAPP) Oct. 15, 1854; she was born in Montpelier, VT. He lived in Maine eighteen years; he then moved to Brooklyn, N. Y., where he engaged in the pork and butter business, remaining there until 1852; he then came to Illinois and settled in Plainfield, engaging in blacksmithing, and remained there until 1856, when he came to Channahon, and engaged in the blacksmithing and wagon business, which he continued until 1866; he then engaged at driving a wholesale notion wagon from Chicago, continuing in same until 1873, when he engaged in his present business in its present location.
