John D. HENDERSON, HENDERSON & STEWART, dry goods, Wilmington; born in Herkimer., N. Y., 
December, 1814, where he resided until his removal to Illinois in 1845, locating at Joliet 
in the spring of that year; in connection with the work on the Illinois & Michigan Canal, 
then in progress, he superintended the work on the upper dam at Joliet; in May, 1848, he 
removed to his present home, and engaged in mercantile business, under the firm name of 
BOWEN & HENDERSON, which continued until 1857, when Dr. BOWEN's interest was purchased by 
Geo. T. STEWART, member of the present firm. Mr. HENDERSON has served in various official 
capacities; was member of the first Board of Trustees of the town of Wilmington in 1854;
also served as Mayor of the city in 1867, 1868 and 1869. Married in 1837 to Miss Helen M. 
daughter of Daniel JOHNSON, of New York; by this union there are two children - Helen L. 
and Mary A.
