Asher HOLMES, deceased, New Lenox Twp., whose portrait appears in this work, was born in Sherburne, Chenango Co., N. Y., in September, 1796; at the age of 9, his parents moved to Chautauqua Co., N. Y.; in 1826, he returned to Chenango Co., and married, Aug. 26 of the same year Miss Eliza Ann ELMORE; they moved back to Chautauqua Co., and remained there until the year 1831, when they again returned to Chenango Co., remaining there until his coming to Will Co. in the spring of 1835; he settled on Sec. 22, in New Lenox Twp., where he died; his widow still lives on the homestead. He held the office of Justice of the Peace in Chenango Co., and that of School Treasurer in New Lenox Twp. He had six children, five living - James E., born June 25, 1827; Myron P., born June 8, 1830; Orsamus, born in August, 1838; Lydia E., born Feb. 5, 1840, and Sophie, born Aug. 14, 1852, and one deceased - Eliza Ann, born Jan. 18, 1834, died in May, 1873.
