John HOLMES, contractor and builder, Wilmington; born in Glasgow, Scotland, Dec. 17, 1832; came to this country; in 1857, stopping for a short time in Chicago, and locating in Wilmington, his present home, in October of that year, where he engaged in contracting and building; in 1867, the firm of CLUTE & HOLMES built the planing-mill which they operated in connection with contracting and building for several years. Married in 1862 to Miss Adeline E. KELLEY, who was born in Wesley Twp., this county; five children by this union, four living - Fred G., Mabel, Isabelle and James; Frankie died in 1864. Mr. HOLMES is a member of Talmud Lodge, No. 24, Knights of Pythias.
