James E. HOLMES, farmer and stock-raiser; P. O. Spencer; one of our early settlers; was born in Chautauqua Co. N. Y., June 25, 1827; came to this State with his father's family and settled where he now resides, in New Lenox Twp, in 1835. He was married Jan. 8, 1854, to Miss Mary E. STIFFLER, who was born in Miami Co. Ohio, Jan. 29, 1838; they have had four children, three of whom are living, viz.: Delia J., William R. and George E; deceased - Rosilla. The farm of Mr. H. consists of 138 acres, valued at $8,500. Since his residence in this township, he has held the office of Town Clerk one year, Postmaster twenty-two years, which position he still retains; also the office of Street Commissioner nearly two years.
