John LEY, farmer, Sec. 18; P. O. Joliet; was born in Prussia Oct. 17, 1823, where he followed farming until 19 years of age, when he emigrated with his parents to America in 1842, and settled in Will Co., Joliet Twp., on Sec. 19, living there until 1852, when he removed two miles east of Joliet, near the Red Mill, where he lived until 1856, when be settled upon his present place; he owns 220 acres of well-improved land, which he has accumulated by his own energy and industry. He married, in 1847, Elizabeth MAGERT; she was born in Virginia; they have four children living, viz., John, Valentine, Frederick D. and Lawrence; the deceased are Joseph and Hubbert. Mr. LEY has held the office of School Director for three years; also, as Road Commissioner.
