Joseph MCCREERY, retired; P. O. Plainfield; the subject of this sketch was born in Benton, Ontario Co., N. Y., July 1, 1810. He married Miss Abigail Ann VAN_RIPER in November, 1830; she was born in New Jersey; they had twelve children, eight living, viz., John, Joseph, Charles, Alfred, Lewis, Mary, Lucy and Isabell. He lived in New York until 1833, when he went to Canada and engaged in the lumber business continuing four years; he then returned to New York and engaged in the lumber business at Rochester, where he remained until 1845; he then came to Will Co., and settled in Plainfield, where he engaged in farming; continued until 1875, when he came to his present place. He is no office-seeker, his only offices being connected with the school and road. He started in very poor circumstances, and now owns 250 acres in this township. He has been connected with the Universalist Church for the past twenty-five years.
