James MURPHY, farmer, Sec. 8; P. O. Joliet; the above gentleman is a native of Roscommon Co., 
Ireland; he was born July 25, 1834, and married Miss Mary Ann ROURKE Aug. 13, 1859; she is a 
native of the same place, and was born Aug. 15, 1841; they had ten children, seven living, 
viz., Mary E., William J., Patrick A., Thomas F., Thresa A., John A. and Mary H. He lived 
in Ireland until 1850, when he came to the United States with his parents, Patrick MURPHY 
and Mrs. Catheron (HALEY) MURPHY, who settled in this township, where they engaged in 
farming; his father died in Joliet Nov. 15, 1877, and his mother died in this township 
in August, 1867; he started in poor circumstances, and now owns 160 acres in this 
township. He has held the offices of Collector two years and Assessor some seven or eight 
years; also, School Treasurer.
