F. G. SMITH, carriage manufacturer, Joliet; was born in Walpole Co., N. H., May 1, 1837; when he was about 12 years of age, he removed with his parents to Essex Co., N. Y.; at the age of 13, he entered his father's carriage manufactory,. and there thoroughly learned every branch of the carriage business, which he continued in Essex Co. until 1876, when he came to Joliet; he first located at 54 and 56 Bluff street, and recently removed to Van Buren street, opposite the Episcopal Church; he was the first to introduce the Concord side-spring in Joliet, and is also, the sole manufacturer in this city of the New Empire cross-spring buggy. Mr.. Smith was married in October, 1855, to Miss Abbie R. _____; of Montpelier; she died in March, 1875, leaving one. son, Franklin A., now engaged with his father. He was married again Oct.11, 1877, to Miss Ella A. HAYWOOD, of Will Co.
