Plainfield; the subject of this sketch was born in Cheshire, Mass., Dec. 21, 1809. He married Miss Hester Ann HILLS July 7, 1831; she was born in Lewis Co., N. Y., Aug. 1, 1814; they had seven children, five of whom are living, viz., James D., Amelia E., Milton R., Ervin E. and Elwyn A. He lived in Massachusetts until he was 7 years old; he then went to Lewis Co., N. Y., with an uncle, where he lived until 1845, except two years in Seneca Co.; he was engaged at his trade of carpenter and builder; he served nine years as Justice of the Peace, and also engaged in general merchandise; in 1845, he came to this township, and engaged in farming; in 1849, he engaged in general merchandise in Plainfield; he was Postmaster from 1849 to 1853; he has also served as Road Commissioner and Assessor; he has been a member of the M. E. Church for just fifty years, and has been Superintendent of Sunday school for twenty-five years; all of his children are married and living out of this county; all are pleasantly situated, and take an active part in the business of their respective communities.
