RICKMAN, RIECKMANN, RIEKMANN, SCHULTZ, WOLLE; posted by Mona Houser, Jan 1, 2002 My grandmother Anna Maria Dorothea RIECKMANN, daughter of Christoph RIECKMANN / RICKMAN / RIEKMANN and his wife Elisabeth WOLLE, was baptized at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Beecher. Her baptism record says she was born in Will Co., Washington Twp. in Febr. 1869. Her god-parents were Marie SCHULTZ and Dorothea WOLLE. I don’t know how long the family lived in Will Co. — they emigrated from Hannover about 1867, and by 1878 they were living in Buffalo Co., Nebraska. Grandma spoke of living in Kankakee Co. If anyone has any information about this family, please contact me.

KRAKAR, KRAKER, VERTIN; posted by Melody Ongenae, Jan 6, 2002 I have deeds, birth certificates, marriage documents, Death certificates, newspaper articles, pictures of homes and people and grave stones, dating back to the 1850s. For the Family name KRAKAR/KRAKER. I know Marcus Krakar was a Co-owner of a shoe store on Jefferson Street with his brother Joseph Krakar/Kraker. Joseph changed the spelling of the name Marcus kept Krakar,

Marcus Krakar was born April 24, 1839, in Libach Austria, Marcus attend public schools in what is now Slovenia. His father was a shoemaker and farmer. he was educated in his native land and at age 18 he left for America with his older brother Joseph. In February 1857 after a seven week journey he landed in Baltimore Maryland.

Early summer of the same year he left on a train bound for Chicago. Marcus was penniless on arrival in the Windy City. Working for board and 23 cents a day he saved enough money to invest in merchandise and notion which he peddled all over the state, for about four years.

During this time he met and married Jacobena Gorges a Prussia Immigrant. Their first born John Marcus was the first of nine children. Around the time of the birth of their third child, Marcus and Jocobena settled in Joliet, IL. Will County, USA, were He and his brother Joseph began working in a shoe and boot store a trade they learned from their father. On Feb. 1, 1864 Marcus Krakar opened The New Shoe And Boot Store housed were Mrs. Kavanaugh dry good store was. His brother joined him as a partner.

After several years he then began Manufacturing cigars this business was housed on Bluff Street, Joliet, Will County, IL. USA. His brother Joseph continued in the shoe and boot business. Marcus would later enter the Stone Quarrying business. Becoming part owner, president and general manager of the Joliet Quarry Co. located at the end of Rowell Ave.,Joliet, Will County, IL. USA

Marcus owned interest in several quarries including one in Indiana from which the stone was used to build the Krakar Mansion on Hickory Street just south of Western Ave., Joliet IL. After his east side home burned. The mansion boasted Seven working fireplaces as well as a third floor ballroom. The Mansion is about 105 years old. Marcus enjoyed craving quartz from the quarry a few pieces are left from his efforts.

In 1885 Marcus’ brother Joseph began using Kraker first seen on the birth certificate of his eighth child. Thus began the confusion. Prior to this time the Kraker spelling had only been seen in the spelling of an add in the Joliet Signal. Never on any legal documents including Joseph’s first seven children’s birth documents. In the 1880’s Marcus had moved on to the quarry business with his sons including John Marcus and later Jacob Sylvester, as documented on their children’s birth certificates. His brother still continued as a shoemaker as documented on the eighth child Francis Krakar’s birth certificate her name being spelled Krakar and his Karker. one can only suppose the brothers may have had a disagreement during this time.

Marcus Krakar donated stone from his quarry to the building of St Joe’s Church,Joliet; St John’s Church,Joliet; and St Joe’s Hospital on BroadwayJoliet. Stone from the quarry was used in building the Old Court House, the Rialto, parts of Joliet Central High School the old Chicago Water Tower,etc.. All in Will County IL. He was a Alderman for the Fourth Ward, Will County and Elder of the Church, but preferred the challenge of the business world. He was a member of the Joliet frontiersmen, and gave of himself to his community. He was a school director and historians claim he could be counted on to cooperate with any movement or measure for the public good. He sub-divided the ridgewood sub-division were Kraker Ave is today. We can only wonder why Krakar Avenue was changed to Kraker Ave. This is a sad statement to man who is part of Joliet’s history.

I am still looking for any addition information on KRAKER/KRAKAR, I know there are still Many family members in the area that I have not found information on. I am also looking for VERTIN information I have documents of 2 Krakars Married to Vertins and One Kraker Marriage document showing J. Vertin as a witness. I thank anyone who can help for their help!

MOULTON, SCOTT, SMITH; posted by Marty Medak, Jan 28, 2002 I am searching for grandmother’s family. Her father, Dan MOULTON was born in 1821 in Batavia, New York, and came to Will County in 1838. He bought land, farmed in the Mokena/New Lenox area, married Elizabeth SMITH of Will County in 1842. His obituary states that his five children were at his bedside when he died in 1880. He was a merchant in Mokena at the time of his death, and was buried in the New Lenox cemetery. One of Dan’s children, Alice O. Moulton, married grandfather, Charles H. SCOTT in Will County in 1871, and was living in LaGrange, GA in 1880. She died there, but we could not find her gravesite: we speculate that she is buried in the family plot in New Lenox. Some of the things we’d like to know: 1) What is the name of Dan’s parents? Other Moultons in the Batavia/Alexander NY area were from Monson, MA: we have insufficient information to connect to them. 2) What are the names, etc, of Dan’s and Elizabeth’s children, grandchildren, etc? 3) What business was Dan in, at the time of his death? Most of my other family members who were farmers “retired” as butchers. I would appreciate any information about the family, no matter how trivial. Thank you. Marty Medak

BURKHART; posted by Julie Chitwood, June 29, 2002 BURKHART – looking for info on the family. Dave Graves was wonderful and sent me the following on my gggrandfather Henry BURKHART: ulie, The following comes from Portrait and Biographical Album of Will County, Illinois , Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1890, page 271. (Everything within the quotation marks are that of the writer, however in the first line of the last paragraph I believe the name “Susan” should be that of Fredericka, also in the line beginning with “In 1849, the father…” at the end it reads “un-1869”, I believe should be until 1869; there’s also the word “woldly” in the next to last sentence, I believe should be worldly.) “John D. BURKHART, Supervisor of DuPage Township, occupies a pleasant home on section 36. He is a well-informed and enterprising man, has been engaged in some form of agricultural work since boyhood and commands the respect of his fellow-men. He was born in Cook County, October 24, 1858, was educated in the publick schools and finished the High School studies at Lemont. Subsequently he attended a business college in Chicago, thus fitting himself for a practical spere of life. In 1869, our subject removed with his parents to Will County, here growing to manhood and beginning his personal career which has not het taken him from the paternal fireside. He is a Republican and has been called upon by his associates to fill several official stations. For two terms he was Justice of the Peace, one year Assessor, and in the spring of 1890 was elected Township Supervisor. Henry Burkhart, father of our subject, was born in Saxony, Germany, January 26, 1819, to George and Susan C. Burkhart, also native of that kingdom. He was reared to manhood, receiving a fair education in his native tongue, to which since coming to America he has by personal effort added a knowledge of English reading and writing. In 1845 he emigrated, sailing from Bremen to New York in forty-two days, and going at once to Erie County, N.Y., where he worked as a farm hand for seveal years. There he was married, October 31, 1848, to Miss Fredericka Dorre, a German lady of fine character and useful knowledge. She bore her part in the cares and shared in the joys that he encountered until February 4, 1886, when she entered into rest, leaving a wealth of affectionate remembrances. The family of Henry and Susan Burkhart consisted of seven children, five of whom survive their mother. Emma is the wife of Peter Williams, living in California, John H. is at home; Charles A. lives in Stockton, Cal.; Louisa is the wife of George A. Hills, of Chicago; Amelia is at home. In 1849, the father removed from the Empire State to Cook County, Ill., where he remained un-1869. He then took up his abode in DuPage Township, this county, on the farm that is the home of our subject. It comprises eighty acres, devoted principally of gardening, in which line of agriculture Mr. Burkhart is meeting with deserved success. He began life poor, and by economy and industry has gained all that he has of woldly goods. His political views are like those of his son, in whose public life he rejoices as a fond father will, as a field suited to his talents and indicating the reputation he bears.”

I found this in the 1900 Federal Census for the city of Joliet, which shows Pearl as having three younger brothers, Joseph (born 1895,) Thomas (born 1897,) and Robert (born 1900.) There is no male listed in the household, so I would guess her father died in late 1899 or early 1900.

Pearl and her brother Joseph were sent to live with a Great Aunt and Uncle near Bison, Rush County, KS, Charles and Mary Ann (Godfrey) ALLEN. They were living there when the 1905 Kansas State Census was taken. Her father was connected to a large family of ALLEN’s that moved to Rush County, KS, from Will County and Kankakee County, IL. I have a great deal of information on these Kansas ALLEN’s, but I’ve not been able to figure out exactly how her father connects to them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to know what happened to Gertrude and the two youngest sons. Pearl never talked about her mother and father, and when asked, replied only that she never knew her parents. I am just guessing that there was some bitterness about being sent to Kansas, as surely she must have had some early memories of them. Her brother Joseph was the only sibling anyone was aware of, but the information on him is sketchy, too. I believe he was a career military man, and he had at least one son, Joseph Jr., but that’s the extent of the information I have on him. Thank you in advance for any possible help.

ROBBEN; posted by Katherine Willis, Dec 17, 2002 My husband’s great-grandfather Olai ROBBEN lived in Joliet in 1900 as a laborer. He was a newly arrived Norwegian immigrant to America, residing at a Norwegian boarding house at #105 Franklin Street, which appears to be near the railroad tracks in the heart of town. The census lists other neighbors as working in a steel mill, or railroad workers. I am trying to find out more about Olai Robben. What was the name of the local Joliet steel mill? Is there any information out there on Norwegians in Joliet – churches, organizations, etc. Basically I am looking for information to round out the little I know about him in Joliet. Later he moves to Chicago. Thank you for your help.

  1. Seeking any information on the descendant of George Fellows (1811) and Phebe Merrias Fellows (1818) of Plainfield, Illinois that were from New York.
