(1899 Old Settlers’ Association Necrology Report by W. W. Stevens, as printed in The Joliet Daily Republican, Sept. 6, 1899)
Old Settlers Meet in the Masonic Temple this Afternoon. — Twentieth Annual Event — Jabez HARVEY in the Chair – A Business Meeting this Morning – W. W. STEVENS Submits Necrological Report – Dinner at St. Nicholas – Speech Making and Story-telling Will Be Feature of Program this Afternoon. —
The twentieth annual meeting of the pioneers of Will county was begun this morning at 11 o’clock in the Masonic Temple. As the morning session is always devoted to the business of the society, none but the faithful attended, consequently the crowd was not large when the meeting was called to order by Jabez Harvey, of Wilton, who was appointed temporary chairman in place of President Amos Savage, who is away from the city, attending a reunion of his old regiment.
The only business of importance transacted was the appointment of the following gentlemen upon a committee to select officers for the following year:
Curtis MORSE, Homer; M. E. DEMOND, Joliet; J. C. BAKER, Manhattan; J. E. GOUGAR, New Lenox, and G. H. MUNROE, Joliet.
This committee will make its report this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, when the company returns from dinner at the St. Nicholas.
The necrology report was submitted by W. W. STEVENS. A new departure was here begun. Instead of reading the long list, as has always been the custom, the necrologist had the report neatly bound in pamphlet form, and each member was given a list to preserve.
The afternoon session will be taken up with speech-making, story-telling and music.
Mr. President and members of the association:
Once more does this association meet in annual reunion, and again does it become my duty to report to you the sad havoc death has made in your midst since last we met. Each year does the list of those who have joined the great but silent majority increase in numbers, including name after name – the long cherished and well known friends of your youth, and thus gradually narrowing the circle of pioneers who have for so long a time dwelt in our midst.
Among the names here recorded are quite a number who were with us in full health and strength one year ago, but are now in a better land. They have fought the good fight and now enjoy the crown of glory that awaited their coming.
One of the old settlers whose name should have been inserted in my last report of 1898, was that of John D. HATTON, who died in Lockport, Feb. 11, 1898, aged 68 years. He was a native of England, but came to Lockport over fifty years ago, and that town had since been his home.
