Edward SAVAGE

Death Of Rev. Edward SAVAGE. — It becomes our melancholy duty, as a public journalist, to announce the death of Edward Savage. He died at his residence, in this city, on the 27th ult., after a protracted illness. His funeral took place on Sunday, the services being held in the Baptist Church. Out of respect to the memory of the deceased, no morning services were held in the Congregationalist and Methodist Churches on that day, that the members of those churches might have an opportunity to attend the funeral. Mr. Savage was long a resident of this city, and filled for one term the office of School Commissioner. He was highly respected by all classes of our citizens. His uniform christian character, and his urbanity and candor in all dealings with his fellow-men made him a universal favorite. He was indeed the friend of the poor and the patern of the good and noble. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of people.

Gertrude SCHIFFER

Death of Mrs. SCHIFFER Daughter of Joseph H. NICHOLS, Had Been Sick But a Few Days Gertrude E. SCHIFFER, wife of Harry SCHIFFER, and daughter of Joseph H. NICHOLS, died at her home on Baker avenue, last evening at 6:40 o’clock. The young lady had been sick only a few days and at her death was but 23 years and 6 months of age. She was married four years ago, and for a year past had worked in her father’s office in the CUTTING Building. She always took a deep interest in all her duties, in fact it was this religious attention to her work that hastened her death, for she insisted on going to the office one day soon after recovering from a severe illness, and the exposure aggravated the trouble and caused the relapse. Her death is a severe shock to her father, husband, and many friends to whom she had become endeared. The funeral will be tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock, with services in the Brooklyn Baptist Church. The interment will be in Oakwood.

William SCHOFIELD

From the Wisconsin Pinery. Obituary. A profound sensation was produced in this community on Monday morning last, by the sudden death of Dr. Schofield. We knew that he had been severly ill for a few days; but none save the Physician, family and immediate attendants, were at all prepared for the sad news. He was beloved by all, and the more general mourning at the death of a citizen was never evinced.

Dr. William SCHOFIELD was born in Columbia Co., Ohio, on the 7th of March 1809 — after a plain but substantial education, embracing the science of medicine and surgery he removed to, and settled in Joliet, Illinois, in 1836, where he went into the practice of his profession, in which he was eminently successful.

Enterprising in temperament, and desirous of seeing more of the north-west, he left a multitude of friends at Joliet and located at Shullsburgh, this state in 1847.

The next year, spring of 1848, found him a resident a Portage County, and fully intent on testing the chances for a for fortune with hundreds of others who were just then for the first, crowding into the Lumbering business on the Upper Wisconsin. Selecting an advantageous and beautiful site on the Eau Claire, in Marathon County, he proceeded to erect Mills and Machinery, and was early in successful operation. Fortune favored him till 1850, when his Mills were burnt and all seamed lost in an instant. But he was rich; if not in money, it was what was better — credit and a host of friends. All his neighbors, fellow lumbermen on the river, stepped forward impulsively, tendering substantial aid to rebuild; so that in a few short months, the ravages of the devouring element were replaced.

In 1855, he removed from Eau Claire to our city, where he has resided to the day of his death. He was several times solicited by his fellow citizens, to places of public trust and honor, almost uniformly declining in favor of others.

He was unanimously chosen our first Mayor of the City of Stevens Point, which office he held for two years, discharging his duties with strict fidelity and credit. To him the City is indebted for many of its best municipal rules, and much of its prosperity.

Intellectually, he was a man of no ordinary mind; of a gentmanly and friendly deportment hnd highly cultivated understanding, he never failed of the good opinoin, respect and friendship of those who knew him.

As a citizen, he was patriotic, self-sacrificing, and faithful; uniformly true and just in his dealings; — always among the foremost to aid the needy, no one turned away from him with a desponding hearr. This community testified its universal esteem for their friend, and their greatest respect for his memory by laying aside every care and attending his funeral, an immense concourse which was fron his residence Wednesday morning the Rev. Jesse Edwards conducting the exercises.

Dr. Schofield leaves a wife and five children to deplore his loss. Their’s is a grief with which the “stranger intermedleth not.” Source: Joliet Signal, Joliet, IL, Vol. 21, No. 31, Page 2, Tues, Jan 12, 1864 Posted by Lawrence B Peet, Aug 13, 2000

She was a friend and mother who will be greatly missed. Her passing away in such a brief period of time was a shock to her friends, and also a great sorrow. Funeral services were held Thursday from the ME church in charge of Rev A.T. McFarland and Rev. J.A. Bahnsen. A ladies quartet sang several selections. William SCHROEDER

At his home on Sat. morning, Dec. 30, at 8 o’clock, William SCHROEDER departed this life. On Wednesday he was apparently in good health but before night that same day he was taken seriously ill, his condition becoming so bad that the children were summoned. He never regained consciousness. John Henry William Schroeder was born in Wriedel, Hanover, Germany on October 11, 1848. When a boy of nineteen years he moved from Germany to Beecher, IL with his parents. At this place on June 23, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia RIECHERS. To this union were born ten children, six girls and four boys. The oldest son, William died in 1900. Mr. Schroeder with his family came to Fillmore Co. 34 years ago. Most of his life was spent on a farm. The last few years he made his home in Ohiowa. A few days previous to his death he was stricken with paralysis. All that loving hands could do, could not spare him, as his heavenly Father had called him to his eternal rest. He was aged 68 years, 2 months and 19 days. There are left to mourn his wife, nine children, Henry, Herman and Fred, Mrs. Emma BUCHMEIER of Fairbury, Mrs. Minnie GEWECKE of Farnam, Mrs. Lena DOMEIER Mrs. Mary TAYLOR, Mrs. Lizzie LAPCHESKA and Miss Sophia Schroeder of this vicinity, two brothers who live in Arkansas and one sister, Mrs. ROETTER in this vicinity, 29 grandchildren and many friends. The funeral took place Wednesday, January 3, at 2 p.m. from the Methodist church in charge of Rev. G. Klatt, pastor of the South Lutheran church, assisted by Rev. F. C. McVay pastor of this church. The text was taken from the 12th verse of the ninetieth psalm and was an eloquent and touching sermon. The Methodist choir furnished the music. Interment was in the Ohiowa cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Klatt. The German choir rendered a hymn. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The last message of the children, on one of the floral designs, “Good-bye Father” rested on the casket. His work in life is done, he rests in eternal sleep, but we have the hope that our goodbyes are only in this world of sorrow. A large crowd was in attendance at the funeral. The sorrowing wife, sons and daughters have the sympathy of the entire community in their great bereavemen

Died, on the 2d inst., Mr. William A. SHARTS, of New Lenox, aged 52 years. After a most severe illness of eleven weeks his sufferings were at last terminated. The funeral services took place at the New Lenox M. E. Church, services conducted by Rev. W. STROUT, of Lockport, and Rev. Mr. HOOVER, of New Lenox. The deceased was a native of New York, from which state he came to this county where he resided until his deathand where, by his pure life, his unswerving integrity and his unobtrusive manner, he endeared himself to all who knew him. The deceased leaves leaves a wife and two daughters to mourn his death, the younger of whom, Josie, is at present very ill, and was unable to attend her father’s funeral. The family has the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends in this their hour of sorrow. They have lost a kind husband and father and the community an honest and upright man.

Beyond this vale of tears There is a life above, Unmeasured by the flight of years, And all that life is love. New Lenox, Feb. 4, 1878.

Thomas SHERAN

Sudden Death-On last Sunday evening, a person passing the the house of Thomas SHERAN in the southern part of the city, heard a moan. The door being fastened on the inside and the windows closed, efforts to enter the house were unavailing. Marshall MCNERNY was sent for who, upon arriving, ordered the door broken open, when Mr. SHERAN was found dead upon the floor. In the afternoon he was apparently well enough and had walked from Elwood station, a distance of twelve miles during the forepart of the day. He was about sixty years old and was smart and active for a man of his age. An inquest was held, and the verdict of the jury was that he came to his death by the visitation of the Almighty.
