Nellie Ellen SLADE

MINOOKA “In the absence of your regular correspondent, I take the liberty to inform your readers of the death of Mrs. Ellen SLADE. After a lingering illness of that dread disease, consumption, she passed away at three o’clock on Monday afternoon, the 16th inst. The funeral services took place on Tuesday, P.M. at two o’clock and were conducted by Rev. R.K.Bibbins, of Channahon. The church was filled with a sympathizing congregation. The altar and pulpiet were tastefully decorated with pure white flowers and green leaves and vines, while just above and back of the casket containing the remains of the deceased a lyre was represented in green leaves-a most appropriate emblem,as she was very fond of music- the choir of which she had been a member wore mourning badges. Mrs. Slade was the wife of Wm. Slade, of tje firm of Slade & Slade, and a daughter of the R.R.ticket agent, MR. Dan’l STAFFORD. She had long been a companion of her father in the telegraph office and at the last was listening for the “call”. Everything was done to restore her to health, but all in vain. Besides paretns and two sisters,(one of them being now in Texas) she leaves a husband, to whom she was lately married, and two children by a former marriage, to mourn her loss. Though these bereaved one have the sympathy of a large circle of friends,we well know that no earthly friend can comfort or console their mourning hearts.W”

Robert STEVENS

Death of an Old Citizen. Another of the old pioneers has gone to his rest. Robert STEVENS, one of the oldest settlers of this county, died at his residence, nearthis city, on the 5th inst., of typhoid fever, after a protracted illness. His funeral took place from the Congregational Church, on the 8th, and was attended by a vast concourse of citizens. The funeral discourse by the Rev. John KIDD, was what might have been expected from that worthy and talented minister. It was able, eloquent and appropriate. We might stop here, but our long and intimate acquaintance with the deceased, and his worth as a man and his intimate connection with the history and prosperity of our city and county, renders it proper that we should give a brief sketch of his life. Mr. Stevens was born in Mason County, Kentucky, July 20, 1802. At the age of two years his parents removed to the State of Ohio, where they resided till he was sixteen years old, when he was put out to learn the tanner and currier’s trade. After learning his trade, he settled in Bartholomew county, Indiana, and commenced business, following it attentively and sucessively for five years, when he lost by fire his buildings and stock and was left pennyless. This reverse led him to look farther west for a permanent settlement. In the spring of 1831, he purchased the farm upon which his family reside and where he continued to live up to the time of his death. At the time of his settlement here, there were but nine families residing in this part of the country — and hostile bands of Indians roamed about the place where our city now lies, and their canoes were tied along the banks of our river. Chicago, then, could hardly be called a respectable village. Mr. Stevens lived to see Joliet a thriving city of 7,000 inhabitants springing up within sight of his residence, and by industry and economy to acquire a competence for his family. During the Black Hawk war, in 1832, Mr. Stevens was commissioned a Captain. He was the first Sheriff of Will county and for several years subsequently held the office of County Commissioner, three of whom managed the affairs of the county in place our present Board of Supervisors. Of late years though never failed to take an interest in political matters, he declined office, though repeatedly tendered to him. In all the relations of life he was a man of undoubted integrity and moral character, and was universally esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances. We can truly say we have lost a valuable citizen and a near friend. (“near friends,” Monday, obviously, was a bad day to be setting type for a Tuesday deadline. — L. B. Peet.)

Robert W. SWANSBOROUGH

Boy Drowned in Mill Race Body Lost 37 Hrs. Robert W. SWANSBOROUGH, six year old, only child of Mr. and Mrs. SWANSBOROUGH, was drowned in the mill race on Monday evening at about five o’clock. The child’s body was not recovered until thirty-seven hours later, at 6 a.m. Wednesday, when Lee MORRIS, professional diver from Chicago, found it in the water at the rear of the VEACH jewelry store, about a block and a half from where the boy had fallen into the stream. Patricia WHITE, 11 year old playmate of the victim said that she and Bobbie were playing along the bank of the mill race and throwing rocks into the water. She left him for a few minutes to go into the house. When she returned, it was only to see her companion lose his balance and go sliding into the water. Although she ran to the spot where she saw the boy go into the water and attempted to rescue him, her efforts were in vain. After seeing the boy float down the stream. Patricia ran home and told her parents what had happened. Wilmington police were notified immediately and a search for the boy’s body was begun. The grim task enlisted the efforts of authorities and townspeople alike and at times there were as many as four boats patrolling and dragging the mill race. A vigil was maintained on both Monday and Tuesday night. It was on Tuesday night, on the recommendation of Deputy County Coroner, O. L. ADDLEMAN, that the aid of the Davis Diving Service was secured. The crew included manager John FERGUSON of Joliet, diver Lee MORRIS of Chicago, and diver tender Clyde SCHENK of Burlington, Iowa. The divers worked for about six hours before their search was successful. It was reported that the body had not been snagged on debris, as feared, but was lying on the mill race bottom. An inquest was held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Addleman funeral home. Funeral services will be held from the Addleman funeral home on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with the Rev. Glenn DUNBAR officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery. – Wilmington Advocate (Illinois), June 20, 1947 (Friday)
