Michael LEAHEY

Shot Dead. — Coroner WERNER held an inquest over the body of Michael LEAHEY, yesterday morning, and the following particulars were developed: Joseph FERGUSON, son of Robert FERGUSON, and sister, were riding home Saturday night and when near the new Convent were halted by two men and ordered to deliver their money, one holding the horse and the other presenting a revolver to the face of Mr. Ferguson. The demand was complied with and immediately afterward the horses sprang forward and they were out of the reach of the highwaymen. Proceeding homeward they met Eli G. WILLIAMS, a neighbor, and the two, leaving the lady at Mr. Williams’, drove to Joliet and notified the police of the occurrence. Returning home, when near the same place, they saw a man approaching and at the same time heard the cry of “hold ! halt ! !” At that instant Williams fired his pistol and the man fell. They stopped and made an examination and found the man dead, and also discovered it was Michael Leahey, a neighbor, whom they had mistaken for a highwayman, and was wending his way home with groceries. The two men came to Joliet and reported their action and were allowed to return home. Yesterday Williams gave bail in the sum of $4,000 to await the action of the grand jury in the matter. Both Mr. Williams and Mr. Ferguson are well known and highly respected farmers of this township and the unfortunate circumstances is deeply regretted both by them and their many friends.

George LINEBARGER

Death of an Old Pioneer — One by one the old pioneers of this county are taken hence, and the time is not far distant when none will remain to detail to us the thrilling perils, privations and hardships of frontier life. George LINEBARGER, the old pioneer of Jackson’sd Grove, died at his home in Elwood, on the morning of the 6th inst., aged 73 years. Mr. Linebarger came to this county more than fifty years ago, when the whole country was a wilderness, inhabited by savages and wild beasts. He lived to see it reclaimed and cultivated and brought to the high state of civilization and improvement it now presents, and contributed his share to accomplish that desirable end. He was a man of sterling integrity, enterprising and public spirited. No man in the southern part of the county was better known, or more highly esteemed for his noble qualities of head and heart. He leaves a wife and a large family of children, most of whom are married and honored and respected in the localities where they reside. The funeral took place on the 8th from the Methodist Church of Elwood, of which he had been a benefactor, and was the largest assemblage of the kind ever witnessed in that town.

Owen LOVEJOY

Death of Ho. Owen LOVEJOY. The death of this prominent politician, which took place at the house of a relative in Brooklyn, on the night of the 25th ult. has been the occasion of many demonstration of respect for the deceased in different parts of the country. For the last twenty-five years, Mr. Lovejoy was notorious throughout the West as the principal leader of the radical Abolition party. He was a man of eminent ability — and on the stump had few equals. It was mainly through his efforts that the old Whig party became Abolitionized. He has been a member of Congress seven years during six of which he represented the district that embraces this county. His remains were conveyed to Princeton for interment. While we are willing to join with some of our contemporaries in their tributes to the memory of the deceased, so far as his talents and position demand, at the same time, we must accompany such an expression with a firm dissent from his political opinions. We regret the death of the orator and man of talents, but we must say that we cannot grieve that the cause of Abolitionism and negro equality has lost one of its chief supports.

Maggrew of Lacon and Mary Z. of Wilmington; one great granddaughter Letitia Louise of Lacon; one brother Robert of Hilbert, Wisconsin, his daughters and sons and a niece and nephew Mrs. Clyde SMEDLY of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Henry M. IMMERZEEL of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Services in her memory were held in the home of her son on Kankakee drive Thursday, July 2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev John WILLIAMSON of Chicago Heights officiating. Mrs. Howard DAVEY played a group of favorite hymns preceding and following the service. Pallbearers were Albert WATERS, Charles MARTIN, E.B. SHIPLEY, William WHITMORE, Sr., Peter SCHOENNEMANN and George SCHEIBNER. Interment was in Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. LUTHER was a member of the Church of the New Jarusalem and when services at that church were discontinued in Wilmington she continued her church activities by teaching a Sunday school class for many years in the Methodist Church. When Wilmington had an organization, Mrs. LUTHER was an ardent worker in the W.C.T.U., and her work in the Union Worker’s Circle of The King’s Daughters will never be forgotten. For over fifty years, she has been an active member of The King’s Daughters and at her death Union Worker’s Circle lost its last charter member. The King’s Daughters organization was responsible for the Wilmington Public Library largely through the efforts of Mrs. LUTHER and she served as secretary of the Library Board from 1914 to 1939 when she resigned. In many was she was of service to all activities for the betterment and progressiveness of Wilmington and will be sadly missed by all who were priviledged to know her.”
