Mrs. Margaret A. MARSHALL

Pioneer Woman Crosses River Mother Of Judge MARSHALL Dead-Other Old Settlers Pass Away Mrs. Margaret A. MARSHALL, mother of the Hon. A. O. MARSHALL, judge of the circuit court of this city, died at her home in Homer on Wednesday night, Jan. 29, as the result of a paralyzing stroke received about a week ago. Up to this shock, which entirely destroyed the use of her right side, and somewhat effected the left, Mrs. MARSHALL had been particularly bright and active for so old a lady. She was past 90 years at the time of her death. Margaet A. PADDOCK was born in Onandaga County, New York, on November 28, 1817. She came west to Illinois in the early 80s and was married to George MARSHALL in Will County on December 10, 1839. Her husband died December 17, 1850, during his return from California by water route and was buried at sea. Widowed, with seven small children to care for, the oldest only 10, and a 200 acre farm, worth about $1,500 at that time, Mrs. MARSHALL kept her family together and raised her children unaided. She was a truly remarkable woman. Mrs. MARSHALL leaves four sons, among the most distinguished men in Will County, Albert O. MARSHALL of Joliet who has the distinction of being the first man born in Will County to be elected circuit judge, and the first man born in Will County to be elected to the senate. Griffin MARSHALL, of Marley, R. W. MARSHALL, now of California, the first native born Will County man to hold office, having been county sheriff in 1870; George E. MARSHALL, now of Oregon, and editor of the Rennselaer, Ind. Republican, at one time; and one daughter, Mrs. Sarah GILLETT of Homer, at whose home she breathed her last. Mrs. MARSHALL leaves 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Two sons and two grandsons have preceded her to the Great Beyond. Three of these sons of Will County and Mrs. MARSHALL served in the Civil War at the same time-Albert O., GRIFFIN, and R.W. MARSHALL. A fourth, Edwin Webb MARSHALL, left the service to die of typhoid fever shortly after his return. The funeral services will be held at the residence of David GILLETT in the town of Homer, at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon. Burial will be given in the Marshall Cemetery at Homer. Mrs. MARSHALL’s grandson, Chester MARSHALL, was ordained a minister in the Baptist Church about a month ago. Mrs. MARSHALL was a member of the Methodist Church all her life. Rev. AKERS of the Marley Baptist Church will preach the sermon.

John MONTFIELD

Joliet Negro Killed By Romeo Marshall Attacked Officer Who Was Taking Intoxicated Colored Woman To Jail. John Montfield, a porter employed at Daley’s saloon, corner Marion and South Chicago street, was shot and instantly killed this afternoon at Romeo, when he resisted an officer attempting to arrest his companion, said to be his wife. The two had gone to Romeo to fish, and this afternoon the woman became intoxicated while in the village. She fell down on the railroad tracks and word was sent to the village marshall, Richard FARRELL. He took the woman in custody and removed her to the village lockup, accompanied by Montfield. The latter appeared willing that his companion be taken into custody and locked up until she became sober, but when the village marshall reached the lockup, Montfield showed fight. She was taken into custody, however, and landed behind bars. Later Montfield secured a heavy timber and battered the door down, assisted by colored men who came to his rescue. Race Riot Follows. What then developed into a race riot resulted in the killing of Montfield. Farrell called upon Village Trustee Louis HANSEN for assistance, and in the riot that followed, the negro was shot dead. The entire community joined in the fight, with the colored men on one side and the village authorities on the other. Several people were badly cut up in the scrimmage, and Sheriff STEVENSON was called upon for assistance. The Sherriff and six deputies were on the scene early in the afternoon and patrolled the district to prevent more bloodshed. Every white resident of the village armed himself and went to the rescue of the village officers. Montfield, who was married, lived on St. Louis street. He was aged 41 years and is declared to have been intoxicated when the riot took place.

Dan MOULTON

Mr. Dan MOULTON, an old resident of this town, died at his residence, April 24, from a cancer in the stomach from which he has suffered for more than a year. Also, MOULTON and MOLTON are both used in the obituary to refere to the same person. L. B. Peet.]

James MURPHY

Stabbing Affair. — On Sunday the 14th instant, there was a stabbing affair, one mile west of this city, which resulted in the death of one of the parties. It appeared that two men, named James MURPHY and James MAHER, had some difficulty, a fight ensued in which Murphy received a frightful cut across the abdomen and died in a few hours. An inquest was held by Coroner DALY, and Maher arrested and committed to jail to await trial for the killing. The deceased was a resident of the town of Plainfield. Maher was from Chicago. Both parties were intoxicated. This is another terrible warning against the practice of drinking to excess.

  1. Obit:
    James Patrick Murphy Obit

James P. Murphy, Pioneer Worker in Uplift, Dies
Father of Ex-Chief of Police, Temperance Advocate and Joliet Figure Succumbs to Pneumonia
    Was 94 Years Old
January 10, 1916, newspaper; Joliet Evening Herald News
James P. Murphy, Joliet’s “Uncle Jimmy” is dead.
This news was flashed today from the home of Mr. Murphy’s daughter, Mrs. Bridget Carroll, Van Buren street. It sent sorrow into homes of thousands of Joliet and Will county pioneers who knew and respected Uncle Jimmy for the part he has played in Joliet uplift.
    Was 94 Years Old
Grip claimed the pioneer, after a short illness. He was 94 years old. Mr. Murphy was stricken New Years with a slight fever combined with a cold. Old age made the fight hard. Pneumonia developed and death came at 9 o’clock last night.
James P. Murphy came to Joliet in 1858, three years after his arrival in the United States from Ireland. Two years he spent in Chicago before coming to this city to engage in the tailoring trade. And from his advent in this city he at once took a leading part in all movements for its welfare.
    Was Temperance Champion
As early as 1870 Mr. Murphy took up the temperance fight and pushed the work in this vicinity. He was an ardent champion of the Father Mathew movement and one of the most effective platform speakers of that day. He acted as spokesman for the Reform club, a temperance society that held public meetings in the old court house for several years prior to 1880. He also supported the famous White Ribbon movement another temperance organization.
Mr. Murphy’s reputation as a worker for civic betterment won him recognition not only at home, but abroad. Among his personal friends was John Redmond, the Irish leader of the British parliament. Others whom he claimed as his friends were John F. Finnerty, Patrick Ford, Francis Murphy, Hon. John Dillon of the Irish Land League, Bishop Burke, the prohibition apostle, and a host of others.
    Old Co-Worker Survives
In Joliet his circle of acquaintanceship was broad. It included the late Judge G. A. Parks, Charles G. Garnsey, George Woodruff, Sr., Judges Dibell, Fithian, Rev. P. W. Dunne, Rev. Joseph McNamee and the late Rev. J. Powers. Eugene Daly, Mr. Murphy’s old temperance co-worker is living.
Mr. Murphy was born in County Mayo, Downfeeney, Ireland, September 26, 1821. After coming to Joliet in 1855 Mr. Murphy served two terms as alderman. During his incumbency he left his mark in the progress of the city. He served as a justice of the peace for sixteen years and was police magistrate on year. He was noted for his “short cuts to justice”. He believed in direct methods and put his beliefs into practice. In politics Mr. Murphy was non-partisan espousing the “best man” cause at all times.
    Leaves Thirty Grandchildren
His wife died one year ago at the age of eighty-two years. One son, two daughters survive. They are Martin Murphy, former chief of police, Mrs. Mary O’Brien, Mrs. Bridget Carroll and Mrs. Annie Welch, all of Joliet. There are fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at nine o’clock from the home to St. Mary’s church, where Mr. Murphy was a charter member.
Here is the tribute paid to Mr. Murphy by one of his old friends today.
    Friend Pays Tribute
“For more than fifty years of his useful life he had been associated with men and women of all creeds and nations seeking to build up the moral tone of the community. His fight for temperance was always a grand one. He never swerved from that purpose. His wit, his engaging personality and his frank statement of beliefs won him the love and admiration of his friends and the respect of his enemies.
“His death is a loss to Joliet and Will county. He was the ideal type of man. His friends, and he had lots of them because he was fearless in the cause of right, will miss him. He was a true man of Erin.”
    Crowd Church at Murphy Funeral
Despite inclement weather, St. Mary’s church capacity was taxed at 9 o’clock this morning when Requiem mass was sung at the funeral of James P. Murphy, pioneer temperance worker who died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Bridget Carroll Sunday night.
Among the many tributes paid the memory of the veteran civic leader the following from the pen of John D. Paige, life long friend and associate in uplift work was received.
