Fanny KENDRICK

Death of the Oldest Resident of Will County, — Mrs. Fanny KENDRICK, formerly wife of Philip SCOTT of this town, who died many years ago, and laterly the consort of the late Tunis KENDRICK, died at her son-in-law’s, Mr. Joseph LEWIS, in Channahon, on the 15th inst., at the age of sixty-eight.– The decease of this worthy lady awakens in our minds reflections of the past. Thirty-two years ago, when she made this town her home, Will county, as well as the whole of Northern Illinois, was a vast wilderness, inhabited by savages and wild beasts.– Chicago was then a small village and Joliet was unknown. Thirty-two years, what changes they have made! The mind can easier realize than can the tongue describe it.Yet this lady whose death we are called upon to cronicle, witnessed it all. She was, indeed, one of the mothers of our country. Since our earliest boyhood we have been accustomed to hear her name held up as the pattern of christianity, humility, virtue, and all the attributes that adorn the sex. Earth can boast of many angel mothers, and we believe that Mrs. Fanny Kendrick was one of them. Heroes have their fame and statesmen their praise, but the attributes of a good woman, who has lived out her days, eclipse all these. The remains of the truly noble lady were deposited in a cemetery near this city.

Anton KOSTELEC

Mill Employe Fatally Hurt by Fast Train Anton Kostelz Struck By Alton Flyer Near Yards of Company Anton Kostelz, 47 years old, 746 Summitt street, an employe of the Illinois Steel company, was fatally injured at 9:20 o’clock last night when struck by a south-bound Chicago and Alton passenger train in the yards near the steel company’s plant. The mill ambulance rushed the injured man to Silver Cross hospital, but he died before the hospital was reached. Kostelz had been in the employe of the steel company for more than twenty years. Recently he had been on the night shift. He was going to work last night when he noticed an oncoming freight train. He waited until the freight train went past, and not noticing the approaching of the passenger train, he is said to have walked directly in its path. The train hurled him a distance of forty feet. When picked up by the train crew his skull was crushed and his right foot severed. Medical assistance was summoned and temporary treatment given. Kostelz died a few minutes before the hospital was reached. The body was removed to Tezak and Markiewicz’ undertaking parlors. Coroner Wunderlich will conduct the inquest this afternoon.
