(1898 Old Settlers’ Association Necrology Report by W. W. Stevens as printed in the Joliet Daily Republican, Sept. 6, 1898, Transcribed by Lawrence B. Peet.)

Will County’s Ranks of Aged Pioneers — Have Been Thinned the Past Year By the Death of 170. — Those Who Have Gone Before — Placed on Record By W. W. Stevens, Necrologist of the Old Settlers’ Association of Will County – An Interesting Report Offered Today at the Meeting of the Society – Many Sad Details Are Recalled – The “Silent Majority.” —

At today’s meeting of the Will County Old Settlers’ Association, held in the Masonic Temple, the necrologist, W. W. STEVENS, submitted a report embracing the death list for the year. One hundred and seventy of the old pioneers have joined the silent majority since the last meeting of the association. The report is very ably compiled, and will, no doubt, be carefully preserved by the members. It is as follows:

Mr. President and members of the Association: Another year has rolled around and you are again assembled in annual reunion to exchange congratulations and to rehearse recollections of early struggles of pioneer life in this now thrifty and prosperous county.

The year just passed has been an eventful one in many ways. It has been particularly so to this association in the large number of those here recorded who have met with us in annual reunion for the last time. They have been our companions and neighbors for many, many years, but they have now faded from sight and left a void that time can never fill.

The list is a long one, much longer than any that has ever preceded it, and yet even in this I fear there are omissions – names that should be mentioned that were unknown to me, or whose residence in our midst has not been made known. Among the names here recorded are many who have long been our most cherished and worthy friends, whose presence was ever welcome to us, but who will hereafter be known only in memory.

One hundred and seventy have passed away since last we met, and of this number 21 have come to the county sixty years or more ago, 47 fifty years or more, and 66 forty years or more. The earliest settler to die during the year was Eli R. GOUGAR, who came to the county with his parents in 1831. The oldest person was Mrs. Sarah GATONS, of Joliet, who came here in 1844.

There is one thought connected with this report, and that is the large number of deaths that occur among the pioneers during the fall and early winter months – a fact that has prevailed as far back as I can trace. Thus thirteen died last September, twenty-six in October, twenty-one in November and sixteen in December – a total of seventy-six. In contrast the number of deaths recorded as occurring in the spring and early summer are, in March, eight; April, nine; May, seven, and June, six: total, thirty.

The first here recorded, to pass away during the year just closed, was Mrs. Nancy F. KELLY, who died in Kankakee, Sept. 5th (1897), aged 90 years.
