(Once again, the user of this posting is reminded that this Report by W. W. Stevens, to the Old Settlers’ Association, was delivered in September of 1900, so all dates given in the months of September, October, November and December are for the year 1899. Old Settlers’ Reunion — Twentieth Annual Session of Will County’s earliest Inhabitants. — Meeting in Masonic Temple – Business Transacted this Morning – Few in Attendance – Numbers Fast Growing Less – More Active Officials Needed – Necrological Report – Social Session – Jabez HARVEY and Dr. A. H. LAING Principal Speakers – Interesting Stories Told. —

The twentieth annual reunion of the old settlers of Will county is taking place today in the society’s rooms in the Masonic Temple. The opening session began at 11 o’clock this morning with President Jabez HARVEY, of Wilton , in the chair. The time was taken up for the next hour with the discussing of the plans for the future of the organization, and at noon, the meeting adjourned till 1:30 this afternoon, when business was resumed. After the reports of the various officials and the election of officers for the ensuing year, the meeting will resolve itself into a social gathering and speeches will be made by Jabez Harvey, Dr. A. H. LAING and others.

It is understood that there will be several changes in the officers for the ensuing year and an effort will be made to select the more active members of the society to act for there is a vast amount of work to do and this should fall on the shoulders of the younger and more able.

The meeting this morning was attended by a small crowd, which fact shows the necessity of the foregoing plan. The following gentlemen were chosen as the committee to select the names of the officers:

Curtis MORSE, of Homer; James PATTERSON, of Wheatland; Joseph E. GOUGAR, of New Lenox; A. P. CARPENTER, of Channahon, and Jerome REEVES, of Plainfield.

The following is the report of the necrologist, which was read this afternoon:

Mr. President and Members of the Association: We are again assembled in annual reunion, and once more do I bring to your minds the many changes made in your midst during the year just closed by the relentless hand of death. The past year has been no exception to the general rule regarding the mortality list of the pioneers of the county, for it fully equals that of any preceding year, while those of extreme old age exceed that of any previous year. This is equally true of the early pioneers, more having passed away during the past twelve months than in any one year before.

The following is the list of deaths that have occurred since last we met, so far as I have been able to gather them:

Aug. 13th , 1899, Mrs. Laura B. SIMMONS, of Chicago, aged 84 years. She was an early settler of Joliet, and taught school here in 1835, being among the very first of the teachers in town.

August 31st, Henry SASS, of Monee, aged 31 years. He was a native of the township.

Sept. 1st, Mrs. Henry LUFKIN, of Knoxville, Ill., aged 84 years. She was formerly a well-known resident of this city, coming here in 1861.

Sept. 7th, John SHUTTS, of Joliet, aged 85 years. He had been a resident of the county 44 years.

Sept. 9th, Mrs. Gertrude A. MILLER, of Joliet, aged 71 years. A resident here for 60 years.

Sept. 9th, Mrs. Emily W. KIPP, of Joliet, aged 79 years. She came to the county in 1844.

Sept. 9th, Timothy BUCKLEY, of Troy township, aged 84 years. He was an old resident there.

Sept. 10th, Mrs. Bridget MELLIN, of Chicago, aged 76 years. She formerly resided in this city, coming here over 40 years ago, and this was her home until 10 years since.

Sept. 10th, Henry ACENBACH, of Joliet, aged 74 years. A resident of the city for 35 years.

Sept. 11th, Mrs. Josephine MAYER, of Joliet, aged 59 years. She had lived here for 50 years.

Sept. 12th, Matthew B. CARROLL, of Joliet, aged 41 years. He was a native of Wilmington, and had always lived in the county.

Sept. 13th, Mrs. Clarissa A. BURT, of Joliet, aged 90 years. A resident of this county for 60 years.

Sept. 16th, Jacob FRY, of Wheatland township, aged 83 years. A resident of the county for 45 years.

Sept. 19th, Firman K. MACK, of Cincinnati, aged 39 years. He was a native of Joliet, and a resident of the county until a few years ago.

Sept. 21st, Fred SCHROEDER, of Peotone, aged 65 years. He had been a resident of the county since 1856.

Sept. 22d, Mrs. Martha E. (BUTLER), wife of John BUTLER, of Joliet, aged 72 years. A resident here fore 40 years.

Sept. 23d, Mrs. Mary TALBOT, widow of the late Richard TALBOT, of Joliet, aged 82 years. A resident of this vicinity for 55 years.

Sept. 23d, George E. ROYCE, of Naperville, aged 36 years. He was a native of Dupage township in this county.

Sept. 25th, Mathew S. HAMMOND, of Junction City, Kansas, aged 66 years. He was formerly a resident of Homer township, having removed there with his parents in 1840.

Sept. 27th, Frank SCHWAB, of Joliet, aged 63 years. A resident of this city for 35 years.

Oct. 13th, Mrs. Nancy A. HIBNER, widow of the late John HIBNER, of Jackson, aged 82 years. She had been a resident of the town since 1868.

Oct. 13th, Samuel K. MATHEWS, of Lockport, aged 82 years. An old resident of that town.

Oct. 13th, Mrs. Johanna F. KURKAMP, of Manhattan, aged 74 years. A resident of the county since 1854.

Oct. 14th, Mrs. Catherine (MORRISSEY), widow of the late James MORRISSEY, of Joliet, aged 72 years. She resided here since 1852.

Oct. 21st, Charles LANKANAU, of Monee, aged 35 years. He was a native of the county.

Oct. 22d, Patrick DONAHUE, of Florence township, aged 76 years. He had been a resident of the township for more than 40 years.

Oct. 23d, Mrs. Tina SWALLEY, of Englewood, Ill., aged 58 years. Deceased was a resident of Joliet for more than 30 years.

Oct. 24th, Mrs. Ella HORTON, wife of Geo. HORTON, of Plainfield, aged 39 years. She was a native of Lockport.

Oct. 25th, Thomas J. STEVENS, of Joliet, aged 61 years. He was a native of the township, and had always lived here.

Oct. 25, John T. FERRELL, of Lockport, aged 80 years. He came to the county more than 60 years ago.

Nov. 10th, Nicholas BAUER, of Chicago, aged 39 years. He was a native of Joliet.

Nov. 10th, Dr. J. L. LINS, of Wilmington, aged 58 years. He had been a resident of the county for nearly 50 years.

Nov. 11th, Michael DOBSON, of Joliet, aged 70 years. A resident of the city since 1854.

Nov. 11th, Mrs. Jane GEIST, of Plainfield, aged 75 years. She was the widow of the late Jacob GEIST, of that town, and had resided there nearly 40 years.

Nov. 24th, Thomas SHANNON, of Lockport, aged 90 years. A resident of the county since 1837.

Nov. 26th, Wm. STEARNS, of Troy township, aged (possibly 76) years. He was an old settler of that township.

Nov. 27th, Willard WOOD, of Crete, aged 91 years. He had been a resident of that town since 1836, and one of its most prominent citizens.

Nov. 27th, Mrs. Ellen GOREY, widow of the late Christopher GOREY, of Joliet, aged 69 years. She was a resident of the city for more than 40 years.

Nov. 28th, Mrs. Margaret (WHITE), widow of the late John C. WHITE, of Joliet, aged 66 years. She had resided here over 40 years.

Dec. 3d, J. J. FOUSER, of Slayton, Minn., aged 72 years. Deceased was formerly a well-known resident of Plainfield, having removed there in 1852.

Dec. 5th, Daniel EASTON, of Wilmington, aged 73 (possibly 78) years. He was an old resident of that part of the county.

Dec. 10th, Thos. HOGAN, of Lockport, aged 78 years. He was an old resident of that town and enlisted in the war of the rebellion from that vicinity.

Dec. 11th, Dr. Joseph FITCH, of Hammond, for many years a resident of Channahon, in this county, aged 74 years.

Dec. 13th, Harriet F. BUSH, widow of the late Edward P. BUSH, of Lockport, aged 91 years. She had been a resident of the town since 1836.

Dec. 14th, Mrs. Christina RUSSELL, wife of Prof. Homer RUSSELL, of Joliet, aged 54 years. She had been a resident of the town since early childhood.

Dec. 15th, Miss S. J. KING, of this city, aged 51 years. She was a native of this township.

Dec. 18th, Maucus M. WOOD, of Chicago, aged 48 years. He was born in Crete, in this county.

Dec. 18th, Mrs. Hannah GOLDEN, widow of the late James GOLDEN, of Joliet, aged 70 years. She had been a resident of the city for over 40 years.

Dec. 18th, A. R. STARR, of Joliet, aged 68 years. He came to the county with his parents when but 2 years old.

Dec. 20th, Mrs. Johanna PARKER, widow of the late Albert PARKER, of Joliet, aged 74 years. She had been a resident of the city for over 40 years.

Dec. 25th, Robert GOUGDY, of Dupage township, aged 79 years. He had been a resident of that town since 1843.

Dec. 25th, Fred ENGLEHART, of Green Garden township, aged 77 years. An old resident of that town.

Dec. 26th, Mrs. Hattie (CONKLIN), wife of Frank CONKLIN, of Joliet, aged 39 years. She was a native of the city.

Dec. 28th, Samuel SAMPSON, of Lockport, aged 85 years. He was an old resident of the town.

Dec. 28th, Levi SCHREFFLER, of Elmira, N. Y., aged 65 years. He came to Joliet in 1850 and resided here many years.

Jan. 2d, Mrs. Annie STIRLING, widow of the late James STIRLING, of Lockport, aged 96 years. She had been a resident of the county since 1836.

Jan 4th, Mrs. Ruth (GOUGAR), wife of Daniel GOUGAR, of Joliet, aged 70 years. She came to Will county with her parents in 1837.

Jan. 4th, Rev. Jos. S. DAVID, of Joliet, aged 77 years. He came to Will county as a minister of the gospel, 40 years ago.

Jan. 4th, John SHURTLIFF, of Seward, in Kendall county, Ill., aged 89 years. He came to Will county in 1831, and lived for some time in the town of Plainfield, when there were but four families in that town.

Jan. 5th, Stephen GLIDDEN, of Channahon, aged 79 years. A resident of the county 45 years.

Jan. 30th, Albert COLLINS, of Santa FE, N. M., aged 29 years. He was a son of Addison COLLINS, of New Lenox, and was a native of that town.

March 13th, Mrs. Nellie (WHITNEY), widow of the late Orrin WHITNEY, of Joliet, aged 82 years. She had been a resident of the county for more than 50 years.

March 14th, Mrs. Sophia (ROEDGER), wife of John ROEDGER, of Peotone, aged 35 years. She was a native of that town.

March 14th, Silas PARK, of Goodland, Ind., aged 82 years. He formerly resided in Will county, having removed here in 1844 and resided here 40 years.

March 15th, T. L. MILLER, of Beecher, aged 83 years. He had resided in the village for more than 30 years.

March 16th, Mrs. Hannah CLENDENING, of Joliet, aged 82 years. She came to Will county with her parents in 1836.

March 18th, Rev. J. C. STOUGHTON, of Aurora, Ill., aged 80 years. He was a well-known citizen of Plainfield 50 years ago.

March 18th, Thomas C. MAYES, of Joliet, aged 55 years. A resident of the city for nearly 40 years.

March 20th, Geo. P. ZARLEY, of Joliet, aged 34 years. He was a native of Joliet and had always lived here.

March 20th, Thomas H. HUTCHINS, of Joliet, aged 61 years. He had been a resident here since 1848.

March 23d, Mrs. Hannah KNOWLTON, of Wolcott, Ind., aged 72 years. She was the widow of the late Henry KNOWLTON, of Jackson township, where she was a resident from 1858, for many years.

March 23d, Mrs. Melina (BURGSTAHLER), widow of the late Frederick BURGSTAHLER, of Plainfield, aged 75 years. She had been a resident of the town since 1856.

March 24th, William F. GISE, of Chicago, aged 53 years. Mr. Gise was an old Citizen of Will county, having removed here in 1858, and lived here for many years.

March 25th, Rev. Samuel E. HEWES, of Crete, aged 85 years. He was one of the early settlers of that part of the county.

March 26th, Charles ROGAN, of Troy township, aged 50 years. He had lived there since he was a child.

March 27th, Mrs. Henry TAYLOR, of Joliet, aged 75 years. She had lived in Joliet more than 50 years.

March 27th, Mrs. Nancy DeLINE, widow of the late Isaac M. DeLINE, of Joliet, aged 73 years. She had lived here for nearly 50 years.

March 27th, Charles RYAN, of Joliet, aged 53 years. A resident here for 40 years.

March 27th, Mrs. Saphronia C. AKIN, widow of the late E. H. AKIN, of Joliet, aged 82 years. She had been a resident here for more than 50 years.

March 27th, Leonard SPAULDING, of Joliet, aged 84 years. Mr. Spaulding was an old citizen of this county, coming here in 1845 and living here until a few years ago.

March 30th, Mrs. Mary (SARTORI), widow of the late Rudolph SARTORI, of Joliet, aged 67 years. She had been a resident of the city for over 40 years.

March 31st, Joseph DAVIS, of Plainfield, aged 84 years. He went there in 1854 and has since been a resident of the town.

April 5th, Michael ZIMMERMAN, of Plainfield, aged 84 years. He had been a resident of the town for more than 50 years.

April 6th, Geo. NIVER, of Plainfield, aged 74 years. He was a resident of that town since 1854.

April 7th, Catherine (BANNON), widow of the late Edward BANNON, of Joliet, aged 78 years. She had been a resident of the city since 1851.

April 11th, Samuel B. BAER, of Chicago, aged 54 years. He formerly resided in Joliet, having come here with his parents in 1859 and remaining until 1870.

April 13th, Charles SHAEFER, of Joliet, aged 62 years. He was an old resident and enlisted in the 20th Ill. regiment in 1861.

April 13th, John BLACKBURN, of Troy, township, aged 68 years. A resident of the county for 40 years.

April 16th, Mrs. Chas. NEEDHAM, of Plainfield, aged 84 years. She had lived there since 1847.

April 16th, Daniel G. FISHBURN, of Los Angeles, Cal., aged 66 years. He was formerly a well-known resident of Will county, having come here some 40 years ago.

April 21st, Wm. H. TRASK, of Manhattan, aged 50 years. He was a native of the town.

April 24th, Emmett WHEELER, of Joliet, aged 72 years. He was an old resident here.

April 24th, Geo. ULRICH, of Green Garden, aged 59 years. He was one of the oldest settlers of eastern Will county.

April 25th, John O’BRIEN, of Great Bend, Kan., aged 62 years. He was an old citizen of Joliet, coming here when quite young, living here until 15 years ago.

April 26th, S. Starr HAWES, of Great Barrington, Mass., aged 76 years. Mr. Hawes came to Joliet in 1856 and was in the lumber business for several years.

April 26th, John C. ASMUSS, of New Lenox, aged 32 years. He was a native of that town.

April 26th, Prentice G. STORRS, of Troy township, aged 66 years. He was a resident of the county for nearly 40 years.

April 28th, John D. McCRELLAIS, aged 65 years. He was a veteran of the civil war and lived here for more than 30 years.

April 30th, John TIERNEY, of Troy township, aged 38 years. He was a native of that town.

May 2d, H. B. NICHOLS, of Joliet, aged 71 years. He had been a resident of the county 45 years.

May 4th, Mrs. Sarah (REYNOLDS), widow of the late Thomas REYNOLDS, of Manhattan, aged 58 years. She was one of the oldest settlers of that part of the county.

May 6th, Mrs. Juliet L. ELWOOD, of Chicago, widow of the late Nelson D. ELWOOD, of Joliet, aged 80 years. She came to Will county with her husband in 1837, and lived here many years. A noble christian woman has gone to her great reward.

May 11th, Myron SPENCER, of Smith county, Kan., aged 83 years. He was an old resident of Troy township.

May 12th, Mrs. Katherine (WARD), wife of Daniel WARD, of Lockport, aged 73 years. She had been a resident of the township for 40 years.

May 17th, Homer RUSSELL, of Joliet, aged 61 years. He had been a resident of the county 40 years.

May 18th, Joseph F. THELLER, of Joliet, aged 35 years. He was a native of the city.

May 19th, Mrs. Leanora M. (LULL), wife of S. W. LULL, of Joliet, aged 40 years. She had been a resident of the county since early childhood.

May 22d, Theodore VAN HORN, of Bloomington, Ill., aged 51 years. He was a son of the late C. C. VAN HORN, the first mayor of Joliet, and was born in this county.

May 29th, Miss Margaret CLEGHORN, of Newark, N. J., aged 56 years. She was an old resident of this city.

June 2d, John McDONALD, of Frankfort, aged 72 years. He had been a resident of the county 50 years.

June 3d, Wm. VOLANDT, of Crete, aged 85 years. He had resided there 40 years.

June 7th, Patrick CONROY, of Channahon, aged 75 years. He had resided there since 1854.

June 9th, Andrew AMEND (possibly ARIEND), of Joliet, aged 78 years. He had been a resident of the county (possibly 60) years.

June 10th, John HANNA, of Joliet, aged 80 years. A resident of this city since 1870.

June 10th, Judge C. R. STARR, of Kankakee, aged (possibly 76) years. He was an old resident of Will county.

June 11th, James CROWN, of Joliet, aged 74 years. He was an old resident here.

June 11th, Mrs. Caroline W. PERRY, widow of the late Joseph PERRY, of Crete, aged 75 years. She was an old resident of Crete township.

June 15th, M. V. GREEN, of Plainfield, aged 63 years. He was one of the early settlers of that town.

June 17th, Abner C. GILLETT, of New Lenox, aged 58 years. A resident of the county since 1856.

June 17th, John YOST, of Lockport, aged 70 years. He had been a resident of the county since 1852.

June 18th, Mrs. MILLER, widow of the late James MILLER, of Joliet, aged 77 years. She had been a resident of the county for nearly 50 years.

June 27th, Mrs. Catherine GREEN, widow of the late John GREEN, of Joliet, aged 88 years. She had been a resident here for 63 years.

June 28th, Mrs. Charles TRITSCHLER, of Joliet, aged 78 years. She had been a resident of the city over 40 years.

June 29th, Mrs. Mary A. (SHIRK), widow of the late Joseph SHIRK, of Wilmington, aged 72 years. She had been a resident there more than 40 years.

July 16th, Mrs, Mary McSHANE, formerly an old resident of this city, aged 94 years.

July 16th, G. SEGEBROOK, of Monee, aged 85 years. He was one of the oldest settlers of eastern Will county.

July 20th, Mrs. Estella, (DIVINE), wife of Wm. DIVINE, formerly of Jackson township, aged 39 years. She was a native of Florence township.

July 20th, Miss Luella H. RUDD, of Joliet, aged 35 years. She was a native of the town.

July 21st, Mrs. Alice (QUIGLEY), widow of the late James QUIGLEY, of Wilton, aged 53 years. She was an old resident of that township.

July 22d, Mrs. Eleanor ADAMS, of Galesburg, aged 77 years. She was the widow of Peter ADAMS, of Joliet, and came here in 1840, residing here many years.

July 26th, Austin GODFREY, of Dupage township, aged 78 years. He had been a resident of the township since 1833.

July 29th, Miss Jane E. STRONG, of Joliet, aged 67 years. She had been a resident here over 40 years.

July 29th, Allen Z. TYLER, of Joliet, aged 69 years. He was an old resident.

July 30th, Mrs. PECHT, wife of Rudolph PECHT, of Beecher, aged 56 years. She was an old resident of that part of the county.

Aug. 12th, James KAVANAUGH, of Joliet, aged 55. He had resided here since 1865.

Aug. 13th, Mrs. Ellen RILEY, wife of James RILEY, of Wilton township, aged 78 years. She was a resident of the county since 1861.

Aug. 13th, Mrs, Lorinda A. (COOPER), of Kankakee county, aged 71 years. She was an old resident of New Lenox township, coming there with her parents in 1840.

Aug. 18th, Lewis A. Emery, of Dupage township, aged 63 years. A resident of the town for 35 years.

Aug. 19th, Mrs. Hattie (CADWALLADER), of Dwight, Ill., aged 56 years. She was a native of the town of Lockport, and that was her home until grown to womanhood.

Aug. 20th, Eugene R. MATTESON, of Joliet, aged 61 years. He was a veteran of the civil war and came to Joliet soon after its close.

Aug. 21st, Fred C. WERNER, of Joliet, aged 36 years. He was a native of the city.

Aug. 25th, Capt. Edward McALLISTER, of Plainfield, aged 72 years. He was a veteran of the civil war and a resident of the county for nearly 50 years.

Aug. 27th, John ROBESSON, of Joliet, aged 81 years. A resident of the city since 1855.

Aug. 26th, John Phillips, of New Lenox, aged 71 years. He was an old respected citizen of that town. (Note: the above dates are out of order and may be in error. – L. B. Peet)

Aug. 28th, Elizabeth (PAXTON), wife of the late A. C. PAXTON, of Lockport, aged 80 years. She had been a resident of the county 60 years.

In the above list are the names of 218 who have gone but a little time before the rest of us to the spirit land. Of this number, 126 had attained the age of 70 years, 59 lived to be 80 years old and 10 who reached the extreme age of 90 years and over. Annie STERLING, of Lockport, aged 96 years, was the oldest person to die during the year. Of those passed away, 198, had lived in the county 40 years, or had come here at least 40 years ago, 73, 50 years, and 30, 60 years or more.

John SHURTLIFF was the earliest of the pioneers to pass away, he having lived in Plainfield in 1831, and Austin GODFREY, of Dupage, was the next earliest, so far as I have been able to learn. Twenty-eight of the deceased were born in the county, and several of them had always lived here.
