Mr. President and Members of the Association:

In submitting to you my report for the year just closed I must ask your kind indulgence for its great length. It may seem to some that it is unnecessarily long, that it contains names that might have been omitted, and while I am quite conscious of the fact that not all here mentioned were ever connected with the association yet they may have kindred or friends here who desire to see their names given in this report; for it is to a certain extent a record of the deaths of the pioneers of the county and as such is treasured by many as a matter of history.

There were thre(e) deaths previous to my last report whose names should have been inserted therein but unfortunately I did not learn of them until after the report was made and I will therefore make brief mention of them here.

From the above it will seem that 246 of the pioneers of the county have passed away since our last reunion. Of this number 196 had come to the county 40 or more years ago. 106 more than 50 years, and 37 more than 60 years; of the number 38 were natives of the county; 16 of the number had reached the great age of 90 years or over; 57 80 years; 134, 70 years, and 192 were 60 years or over of age.

The oldest person who had died in the past year was Rebekah SHAW, of Lockport, who was 97 years old at the time of her death and the next oldest was John HIBNER, of Jackson, aged 96 years. Barak RUDD, of Joliet, had lived in the county the longest, 67 years; Mrs. N. P. COOPER, of New Lenox, 66 years, and H. N. MARSH, of Joliet, 65 years.

The pioneers who removed to this county, sixty or more years ago, are growing fewer in number each year, and soon – too soon – the last of them will have crossed the dark river and joined their friends on the other shore.
