(1904 Old Settlers’ Association of Will County, Necrology report, compiled by W. W. Stevens and printed in the Daily Republican, Joliet, Illinois, Thursday, September 1, 1904, transcribed by Lawrence B. Peet.)

Necrological Report — Mr. President, Members and Friends of the Association:

We are assembled this year in pleasant quarters in our annual reunion and under unusually favorable circumstances, and were it not for the painful reminder that this report brings you, of the many who have crossed over the dark river since last we met, the meeting might be one of unalloyed pleasure. But to journey to that bourne from whence none return is the inevitable fate of all living, and we bow in silence and submission to the fell decree.

In the report, I now place before you, will be found, perhaps, the name of some familiar friend – some playmate of your youthful days who has fought the last great battle of life and joined the silent majority, there to await your coming.

My report as usual is a long one, though not quite so lengthy as that of last year. It is necessarily incomplete for the reason that it is almost impossible to get the names of all who pass away. Friends of the deceased often aid me in procuring the necessary information, still some are missed, unavoidably so.

In my report of last year an error occurred that I now desire to correct Mrs. Mary E. PEARCE, who died at San Diego, Cal., April 17, 1903, was the widow of Samuel E. (PEARCE), instead of Wm. L. PEARCE, as stated in my report.

The oldest persons among the pioneers to die during the year were Timothy KINNEY, of Joliet, who died April 5th; Patrick WHALEN, of Braidwood, who died March 27th, and Mrs. Jeanette M. LYON, of Joliet who died August 23rd, each of them being 95 years of age. There are 56 native born citizens who have died during the year. Of these Mrs. Sabina D. MILLER, of Crete, who died March 8, aged 68 years, and who had always lived there, and Mrs. Margaret Ann KING, of Boone, Iowa, who died July 21st, at the age of 66, who was born and grew to womanhood in Frankfort, were the oldest.

During the 8 years that I have served as your necrologist, I have reported the names of 1995 who have passed away during that time, and of this number 626 had reached or passed the age of 80 years, and 76, 90 years. 256 of the number had lived here 60 years or came here at least 60 years ago, and 18, 70 years.
