1910 Necrologist Report

The following report contains the names of 121 old residents, members, relatives and friends of the Association, who have passed away since my last report, with the exception of Mr. Haines, the notice of whose death I did not receive until after my last report was made up.

Thornton Griffin HAINES.

A former well known citizen of New Lenox, died in Los Angeles, California, May 1st, 1909, at the age of 74 years. He was born in Westchester, Pa., November 30, 1834, and came to New Lenox in 1851. He was the first Station Agent for the R. I. R. R. (Rock Island Rail Road) in that village, the first postmaster and in company with his brother-in-law, Ward KNICKERBOCKER, started the first store there. They made a United States flag and hoisted it over the store when the first train came through the village and each engineer as they went past saluted it with three toots of his engine. During the Civil War he was the captain of one of Gen. Grant’s Dispatch boats from Fortress Munroe to Washington. He went west some twenty years ago.

Mrs. Phoebe Phelps HEWES.

An old resident of Crete, died in that town September 1st last (1909) at the age of 91 years. She was born in South Hero, Vermont, April 28, 1818, and was married to the Rev. Samuel HEWES of Crete December 24, 1840. They removed to Crete in 1859 which place was thereafter their home. Mr. Hewes died in 1893.

Who for more than 50 years had been a resident of Joliet, died at the residence of his daughter on North Hickory Street, November 5th last (1909) at the age of 78 years. He was a native of Germany but came to Joliet in 1856. He was married to Miss Johanna LeDEAUX, a native of Switzerland, April 15, 1853, who died April 19, last (1910).

Mrs. Ida L. NORTHRUP.

Was born in Joilet November 12, 1855. She was the daughter of the late John A. (BOWMAN) and Anna O. BOWMAN, old and well known residents of the city. She was married to Charles M. NORTHRUP September 7, 1875. Mrs. Northrup died in Kansas City, Mo., September 11th, 1909, at the age of 54 years.

Mrs. Caroline CONRAD.

Of Peotone died in that town September 18th last (1909), at the age of 72 years. She was born in Baden, Germany, January 23, 1837, and was brought to this country by her parents in 1850. She was married to John CONRAD, an old resident of Peotone, July 29, 1855, and since that time Peotone has been her home.

Of Lockport, died Friday, January 15th (1910), at the age of 69 years. He was born in February 1841, and came to Lockport when but a child, and that had been his home for more than 60 years. Mr. Wardle was a veteran of the Civil War.

Mrs. Harriet BUSH.

A resident of Joliet since 1860, died at her home at the corner of Western Avenue and Hickory Street in Joliet, September 20th (1909), at the age of nearly 82 years. She was born in Kent County, England, January 17, 1828, and was married to John W. STEVENS in England in 1847. Soon after the marriage they removed to Will County and settled in Joliet east of the city, where Mr. Stevens died in 1857. In 1859 she married the late Frank BUSH, who died in Joliet, November 10, 1897. Mrs. Bush was one of the oldest communicants of Christ Episcopal Church in Joliet.

An old resident of Joliet, died April 19th, last (1910), at the age of 76 years. She was born in Rosebenz, Switzerland, February 14th, 1834, and came to Will County with her parents when but ten years old. She was married to the late Ignatz WEISHAAR April 15th, 1853, and in 1893, they celebrated their golden wedding. Mr. Weishaar died November 5th, last (1909).

Mrs. Louise SEHRING.

Widow of the late Fred SEHRING, of Joliet, one of its most honored and enterprising citizens, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. A. POEHNER, in San Francisco, California, September 20th, last (1909), at the age of nearly 80 years. She was born in Germany, November 1st, 1829, but came to Will County with her parents in 1853, and was married to the late Mr. Sehring, January 16, 1855. They soon afterwards located in Joliet and this was thereafter her home until Mr. Sehring’s death, July 2nd, 1892.

Mrs. Louisa C. WARD.

Widow of the late Charles E. WARD, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. SCHROEDER, on Woodworth Avenue in Joliet September 26th, last (1909), at the age of 81 years. She came to Joliet in 1854 and this has since been her home. She was one of the Charter members of the First Presbyterian Church and for forty years a most successful Sunday School teacher in her church and always took a very lively interest in all church work. Mr. Ward died in 1877. Mrs. Ward was born January 14th, 1828.

Of Homer, was born in that town, June 18th, 1836, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank ROWLEY, on Saturday morning, March 26th (1910), at the age of 73 years. He was a gallant soldier in the Civil War, and one of the most prominent citizens of the County, having held several offices of trust, and always filled them with the utmost satisfaction.

Captain Savage was married to Miss Mary L. SLATE, February 25th, 1864, and she survives him. He was president of the Association in 1897 and 1898.

John LEPPERT, Sr.

Died at his home in Wheatland on Sunday, September 26th (1909), at the age of 86 years. He came there when he was 26 years of age and hence had been a resident of the town for 58 years. He was a native of Germany.

Mrs. Esther SNYDER.

Widow of the late Stephen SNYDER, of Joliet, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. HALLET, on Collins Street, on Thursday, September 30th (1909), in the 95th year of her age. She was born in New York, May 1st, 1815, but came to Will County and settled in Homer some 50 years ago.

John McQUEEN.

A native of Scotland, and for more than fifty years a resident of Will County, died at the home of his niece, Mrs. M. JACKSON, in Joliet, on Monday, October 4th, (1909), at the age of 72 years.

John VOIGHT.

A native of Germany, but a well known resident of Joliet since 1853, died at his home on South Richards Street, on Thursday, October 7th, (1909), at the age of 80 years. He was a tailor by trade but for the past 30 years has been a merchant.

Charles F. McPARTLIN.

A resident of Joliet for 55 years, died at his home on Collins Street on Sunday evening October 10th (1909), at the age of 60 years.

William Dana PIKE.

Of Plainfield, who died at his home in that town, October 13th (1909), was born in Rutland County, Vermont, in 1832, and came to Illinois in 1856. He was married that year to Miss Maria WILBRETH, a native of his own State, who survives him.

Mrs. Janet K. FINDLEY.

Widow of the late Thomas FINDLEY, died at her home in the township of Wheatland on Wednesday, October 13th (1909), at the age of 84 years. She was among the first settlers of the town, having resided there over 62 years. She was married to Mr. Findley soon after settling there. Mr. FINDLEY died January 6th, 1905, aged 86 years.

A native of the town of Jackson, died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, Sunday, September 11th (1909), at the age of nearly 48 years. He was born in Jackson, October 10th, 1862, and had always lived in the County. He was married to Miss Edna OSBORNE, of Joliet, in 1889, and she with five children survive him.

Elias H. WHITED.

Who died in Chicago October 19th (1909), at the age of 73 years, was an old resident of Joliet, coming here in 1853 and this was his home for many years. He was born in Little Falls, New York, in 1836. At the time of his death, he was the oldest employee of the Rock Island Road, having been in the constant employ of the road as ticket agent for 55 years.

Theodore HARDER.

One of the early pioneers of Lockport, died at his home in that town October 20th, last (1909), at the age of 81 years. He was born in Columbia County, N. Y., in 1828. He came to Will County in 1852, locating in Lockport and that was thereafter his home. He was married to Miss Susan A. Billings, of New Lenox, in 1853, who survives him.

An old resident of Joliet, died at his home on Maple street, on Saturday morning, April 2d, (1910), at the age of 65 years. He was born in Susquehanna, Pa., in December, 1844, and came to Joliet in 1852, and here he has since lived. In 1867, he was married to Arabella CRAWFORD, of New Castle, Pa., and she with four sons survive him.

Leopold LEHMAN.

Who for more than forty years had been the leading violinist and musician in Joliet, died on Sunday afternoon, October 24th last (1909), at the age of 74 years.

Mrs. Margaret GLEASON.

Widow of the late Hugh GLEASON, died in Lockport on Wednesday morning, November 3rd (1909), at the age of 71 years. She had been a resident of the town for 60 years.

A native of the village of Mokena, died at his home there on Monday evening, April 18th, last (1910). He was born in Mokena, in October 1855, and was the eldest son of Ozias McGOVNEY, one of the oldest members of this Association.

Mrs. Julia A. BISHOP.

Wife of Wm. W. BISHOP, died in St. Paul, Minn., November 13th (1909). She was the daughter of the late Andrew KING of Troy Township in this County, and was born in that township in 1843. She was married to Mr. Bishop in September 1865, and Joliet was her home until some twenty years ago.

Albert R. CLARK.

Was born in New York, Feb. 24th, 1840, and came to Joliet more than forty years ago. He was a most worthy and exemplary citizen and prominent as a business man. His death occurred November 14th, last (1909).

George WITTY.

One of the oldest of the old residents of Joliet, died November 22nd, 1909, at the age of 62 years. He was a native born citizen and had always

Anslow BELL.

Of Mokena and for more than a half a century a resident of that place, died there November 27th, (1909), at the great age of 90 years. He was one of the sturdy yoemanry of the County and of the highest respect in the community where he lived.

Mrs. Charity Barrett CARSON.

Wife of Hugh H. CARSON of Joliet, died at her home on Oneida Street November 28th last (1909) at the age of 60 years. When less than a year old her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William F. Barrett, removed to Joliet and this thereafter was her home. She was united in marriage to Mr. Carson February 16, 1881, and he with one son, Hugh Barrett CARSON, survive her.

Charles WEBER.

Of Frankfort township deceased at his home in that township December 3rd last (1909), at the age of 64 years. He had resided there since he was four years old. In 1874 he married Miss Wilhelmina KIRSTEIN, who survives him. He enlisted as a common soldier in the Civil War in 1862 and served Faithfully until its close in 1865.

George W. FLAGG.

A native of Plainfield, died at his home in that town December 5th at the age of 73 years. He was born here July 25th, 1836, and that was always his home town. Mr. Flagg was married to Miss Marada COLGROVE, September 17, 1861. She dying October 27th, 1905. He enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War and served his country most faithfully. He was an active member of the Pioneer Association and served as its Vice President for his town for several years.

Freeman GAY.

One of the oldest of the old settlers of Will County passed away at his home in Los Angeles, California, December 15th, last (1909), at the ripe age of 92 years. He was born near Farmington, Maine, August 9, 1817, and came to this county in 1845. He settled on Hickory Creek but a few years later removed to the head of Jackson’s Grove where he remained until 1884, when he sold out and went to California.

Was born in Silver Creek, N. Y., August 19th 1854, and came to Joliet in 1876. He was married to Miss Hattie A. CLAYES, a daughter of the late Levi M. CLAYES, of Joliet, and one of the original members of this association. Mr. Talcott was the president of the Will County Bank, and a prominent business man in the City. His death occurred May 22nd, last (1910).

John I. ST. JULIEN

A resident of Joliet since 1856, died at his home on North Hickory Street, December 17th, at the age of 70 years. He was born in Alsace, France, July 22, 1839, and came to America with an uncle in 1854, settling first in Naperville, but two years later removed to Joliet and this was thereafter his home.

Was born March 17th, 1829, in Westphalia, Germany, and came to America in 1854, and to Will County in 1860, settling in Washington township, and that has been his permanent residence. Mr. Wilke was first married in Germany, but his wife died a few years later, and he contracted a second marriage with Miss Stena BRUTLAG, who survives him. His death occurred May 26th, last (1910), at the age of 81 years.

Noble JONES.

Of Mokena, died at his home in that village Wednesday, December 22, 1909, at the age of 75 years. He was born in Barnstone, Canada, November 15, 1831, and came with his parents to this country in 1844. In 1852 he, with a brother, went across the country with a team to California, where he remained two years and then returned to Mokena, and that was thereafter his residence until his death. (On) July 25, 1855, Mr. Jones was married to Miss Clarissa B. FARLEY, of West Creek, Indiana. Mrs. Jones died July 25, 1903.

Joseph F. DUMERMOTH.

A native of Joliet, died at his home in this city Thursday, December 23rd, (1909), at the age of 64 years. He was born in Joliet, August 24th, 1846, and had always lived here.

George F. GURNEY.

An old and well known resident of Will County, died at his home on Union Street, in this City, on Sunday, December 26, (1909), at the age of 77 years. He was born in England, July 2, 1832, and in 1845 came to Will County with his parents, and this was thereafter his home. He married Miss Eliza BRYDON in Wilmington, a native of Liverpool, England, and she with seven children survive him.

August KRAUSE.

One of the oldest and most esteemed of the citizens of Wilmington, died at his residence there on Saturday morning, December 25, (1909), aged 80 years. He had lived there for more than half a century.

Mrs. Caroline A. OLIVER.

The esteemed wife of Captain S. A. OLIVER, of this city, died at her home on Second Avenue on Monday morning, December 27th, (1909), at the age of 70 years.She was born in Salem, Massachusetts, January 18th, 1839.

Was born in Winchendan, Mass., January 9, 1836, and came to Joliet in 1858. This has since been his home. His death occurred Jan. 10th, last (1910). Mr. Stearns was married to Miss Jennie M. COMBS in 1861. She survives him.

Mrs. Lavina Howard JACKSON.

Of Wilmington, one of the pioneers of Will County, died Wednesday, January 12th, (1910), at the age of nearly 93 years. She was born in Danube, New York, in 1817, and came to Will County in 1844 – 66 years ago. She was married to Joseph Jackson in her native town in 1837 and seven years thereafter they removed to this county which has since been their home.

Daniel HAYDEN.

An old resident of the town of Florence, died at his home there on Saturday, January 1st, (1910), at the age of 70 years. He was born in Florence, Maine, August 13th, 1839, and came to the county with his parents in 1851.

Bernard DEIGNAN.

A resident of Joliet for 58 years and an engineer on the Michigan Central R. R. for 50 years, died at his home on Collins Street, January 3rd, (1910), at the age of 82 years. He was married to Miss Elizabeth DUNNING in LaSalle in 1854, and she survives him.

Mrs. Sarah H. BUCK.

Died at her home on South Center Street in Joliet, on Saturday, January 8th, last (1910), at the age of 73 years. She was the daughter of the late Jirah E. (BAKER) and Elmira BAKER, old and highly respected citizens of Manhattan, and was born in Hoosic, N. Y., October 20th, 1836, and came to Manhattan in 1856. She was married to George A. BUCK, who survives her, March 22, 1859, and on March 22, 1909, they celebrated their Golden Wedding. Of the eleven children born to them but three survive. They are Werden (BUCK), a well known business man of Joliet; Jennie F. (BALDWIN), Wife of Arthur BALDWIN of Gilroy, California; and Lucy M. (BOSTWICK), wife of Lincoln C. BOSTWICK, also of Joliet.

One of the oldest residents of the County, died at her home on Ottawa street, in Joliet, Sunday evening, April 17th, (1910), at the age of 84 years. She came to the County sixty years ago, and had lived in Joliet more than 50 years. Mrs. Adam was born in Columbus, Ohio, March 14th, 1826. She was the widow of the late William ADAM, who died November 12th, 1894.

Mrs. Eliiza Norton BIRCH.

Wife of Walter BIRCH of Plainfield, died there February 6th, (1910). She was born there in 1843, and that place has always been her home.

One of the oldest members of this Association, died in Joliet at the home of his niece, Mrs. R. W. GRINTON, on Friday, April 22nd, (1910), aged 76 years. Mr. Carpenter was born in Orleans County, N. Y., January 27th, 1834, and came to Joliet in 1853, and Will County has since been his home. He was married to Miss Ellen SPENCER, January 10th, 1855, she dying October 20th, 1890. Mr. Carpenter joined the Association in 1884, and was one of the most prominent members. He was secretary and treasurer of this Association for ten years, performing his duties as such with the utmost satisfaction.

George W. EMMETT.

Died at his home in Wilmington on Saturday, January 15th, (1910), at the age of 87 years. He was born in Harrisburg, Pa., August 1, 1823, and came to Will County in 1840. His marriage with Miss Mary FULLER took place in Wilmington, December 4, 1856.

Capt. Stephen A. OLIVER.

Was a native of Lynn, Massachusetts, having been born in that City, February 28, 1838. He passed away at his home on Second Avenue in Joliet, January 17th, last (1910), having reached nearly the age of 73 years. He was among the very first to enlist as a soldier in the late Civil War and served his country faithfully until 1863. He was an old resident of Joliet and one of its most prominent business men. His marriage with Miss Carrie A. LUSKIE, a native of Salem, Massachusetts, took place October 2, 1863. Her death occurred December 29th, last (1909).

Mrs. Arzelia PORTER.

Of Channahon, died Tuesday morning, January 18th, (1910) at the age of 80 years. Mrs. Porter was born in Bedford, Ohio, July 30, 1829, and was married to Leman PORTER, her late husband, July 7, 1857. They removed to Channahon in 1866, and that place was thereafter their home. Mr. Porter died August 28, 1895.

Mrs. Jane KILLMER.

Of Joliet, diewd at her home on Herkimer Street on Tuesday evening, January 18th, (1910) at the age of 82 years. She had been a resident of the county 77 years. Sixty-two years of which she lived in DuPage township. She was the widow of the late Thadeus B. KILLMER, who died March 27th, 1899.

Mrs. Mary H. RICHARDS.

Widow of the late George RICHARDS, of Joliet, died at her home on Union Street in Joliet on Wednesday, January 31st, (1910) at the age of 78 years. She was born in Richland County, Ohio, July 25th, 1831, and was married to Mr. Richards, May 2nd, 1861. They came at once to Joliet and this has since been her residence. Mr. Richards died in 1882.

Mrs. Betsy TWINING.

Widow of the late Hiram TWINING, of Green Garden, died at her home there January 31st, last (1910) at the age of 88 years. She was a native of Schrewbury, Vermont, and was born July 22nd, 1821. She came west when quite a young woman and was one of the earliest of the settlers of Green Garden.

Richard P. GREENWOOD.

Was a native of Grasswell, England, and was born February 7, 1832, and died at his home in Joliet Township, January 31st, last (1910). Mr. Greenwood came to Will County with his parents in 1847.

Dwight W. BRODERICK.

Of Wilton was born in North New Berlin, New York, March 15th, 1832. He was married to Miss Loretto B. BROOKS, November 26th, 1854. He came to Will County in 1868 and this has since been his home until his death, January 31st, last (1910). He was a soldier in the Civil War and made a good record as such.

George P. ADAMS.

A well known resident of Joliet since 1860, was born in Ogdensburg, N. Y., April 16, 1832, and died at his home on North Broadway, February 3rd, (1910) at the age of nearly 78 years.

John OFFNER.

One of the oldest of the old pioneers of Monee died at his home there February 6th, last (1910) at the age of 90 years. He had lived there for nearly 60 years and was highly respected and worthy citizen.

David BILSAND.

Who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. De HART, on South Center Street in Joliet on Monday, February 7th, last (1910), came to the county in 1846, and this was thereafter his permanent residence. His age was nearly 86 years.

Mrs. Mattie M. SALTER.

Widow of the late Dr. George B. SALTER, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. S. ROBINSON, in Youngstown, Ohio, on Tuesday, February 8th, (1910) at the age of 68 years. Doctor and Mrs. Salter were old residents of Joliet and were well and favorably known to the old settlers of 40 years ago.

Mrs. Susanne Freund WEBER.

Widow of the late John WEBER, of Joliet, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph WEBER, on North Hickory Street on Sunday, February 12th, (1910) at the age of 78 years. She was a native of Bavaria, Germany, but came to Joliet with her parents when she was but 12 years old and this has since been her home. Mr. Weber passed away some forty years ago.

Harlow H. SPOOR.

An old resident of the County, died in Wilmington on Tuesday, February 22nd (1910), aged 90 years. He was a native of Ontario County, N. Y., and came to Will County and settled in Jackson’s Grove in 1844, and had lived in the County ever since.

Mrs. Rosa CONKLIN.

Of Joliet, died Wednesday evening, February 23rd (1910), at the age of 76 years. She had been a resident of the City for more than 60 years. She was the widow of the late Simon CONKLIN who was killed during the Civil War.

Mrs. Elizabeth BOHLANDER.

Of Peotone, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. H. STASSEN, on Thursday, February 24th (1910), aged 80 years. She was the widow of the late John BOHLANDER, of that town and was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, December 29th, 1829. She came to Will County with her parents in 1852. Mr. Bohlander died in 1877.

John William SCHLIMM.

An old and well known resident of Joliet died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry WINCKLER, on the Plainfield Road on Sunday, February 27th (1910), at the age of 88 years. Mr. Schlimm came to Joliet in 1850, and had continuously here since that time.

Martin HOHMANN.

Of Chicago, died in Monee, Wednesday, March 9th (1910), aged 65 years. He was born in Monee in 1845 and had lived there until ten years ago when he removed to Chicago.

Died at his home on Cass street, in Joliet, July 14th (1910), aged 79 years. He was born in Lockport, N. Y., in 18312, and came to Will County in 1866, and this has since been his native home.

Mrs. Elizabeth BURKE.

Of Joliet, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, March 9th (1910), at the age of 88 years. She was born in Kings’ County, Ireland, and came to this county when 23 years of age and this has been her home for nearly 60 years. Her husband , Thomas BURKE, died September 12, 1898, aged 72 years.

Cephas C. OLNEY.

Of Sacremento, Calif., died there March 18th (1910), at the age of 76 years. He was born in Perry, N. Y., June 15th, 1833, and came to Will County with his parents when a small boy, and this was his home until his removal to Sacremento in 1885. He was married to Miss Lucy D. FULLER, in Joliet, January 2d, 1868, — she dying February 10th, 1904.

Mrs. Amanda C. GOODSPEED.

Died at her home on Union street, in Joliet, on Monday morning, March 21st (1910), at the age of 75 years. She was a native of New Lenox, and was born June 27th, 1835, and had always lived in the county. She was married to the late James GOODSPEED, May 22d, 1862, he dying October 17th, 1885.

Mrs. Mary Lee SPANGLER.

Wife of Peter W. SPANGLER, who died in Plainfield, March 21st, last (1910), was born in Summit County, Ohio, November 8th, 1846, and came to Plainfield when but a child. She was married to Mr. Spangler in 1870.

Mrs. Elizabeth HOFFMAN.

Of New Lenox, was born in Scotland, October 1st, 1832, and came to America with her parents in 1843, they settling in Joliet, where they resided for forty years, but for the past 28 years she has been a resident of New Lenox. She was married to her now surviving husband, R. C. HOFFMAN, September 9th, 1855. She died at her home in New Lenox, Tuesday, March 22d, last (1910).

Henry H. STASSEN.

One of the oldest members of the Association, died at his home on Oneida street, in Joliet, on Friday morning, March 25th (1910). He was born in Germany in 1838, and at the age of 16 years he came to this country and settled in Monee, in this County, and here has since been his residence. He was married to Miss G. Maria DUDDEN, a native of a neighboring village of his own, and she survives him. His age was 72 years.

Mrs. Theresa BALTZ.

Of Joliet, died Sunday, March 27th (1910), aged 79 years. She was the widow of the late John BALTZ, an old resident of Troy Township, having lived in the County more than 50 years. Mr. Baltz died in 1896.

Isaac GATES.

One of the early settlers of Plainfield, died at the home of his son, George (GATES), in that town, on Thursday, March 31st (1910), aged 80 years. He was born in Center County, Pa., October 13th, 1829.

Walter BUMP.

Of Homer, died at his home there on Thursday, March 31st (1910), aged 49 years. He was a native of the township, and had spent his entire life there.

Samuel MOTINGER.

One of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Plainfield, died at his home in that village, April 16th (1910), aged 61 years. He was born in Ohio, April 13th, 1849, and came to Plainfield when a small child. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served throughout the entire conflict. Mr. Motinger was married to Miss Isabella A. HARTONG, and she survives him. (Note: the Joliet Evening Herald of the following day has the name spelled MOTTINGER. – L. B. Peet)

Mrs. Margaret PALMER.

Of Joliet, died at her home on Bluff street, on Friday, April 1st (1910), at the age of 78 years. She was the widow of the late Louis PALMER, and had lived in Joliet 64 years.

Mrs. Anna Burnett ANDERSON.

Wife of Thomas B. ANDERSON, of Wheatland, died at her home there on Saturday, April 2d, last (1910), at the age of 53 years. She was born there February 22d, 1857, and had always lived in the town.

Miss Samantha WARREN

A resident of Will County since 1833, died at her home on Herkimer street, in Joliet, on Tuesday, April 5th (1910), at the age of 87 years. She was born in Aurora, Erie County, New York, November 26th, 1822.

Mrs. Mary GORGES.

Widow of the late John GORGES, of Joliet, died at her home on Western avenue, on Saturday, April 9th, at the age of 78 years. She has been a resident here for 60 years. Mr. Gorges died December 4th, 1898.

David RISLEY.

An old member of the Association, died in San Francisco, Calif., April 4th (1910). He was a son of Hamilton D. RISLEY, one of the early pioneers of Will County, who came here in 1833, from Oneida County, New York, and there the son, David, was born in 1828. He went to California many years ago.

Mrs. Catherine E. REICHERT.

Of Joliet, died at her home on Sherman street, April 13th (1910), aged 77 years. She was a native of Germany, but came to the county with her parents at the age of 17 years, and here has since been her residence. She was the widow of the late John Reichert, a former well-known merchant of Joliet, who died May 1st, 1900.

Albert J. EWEN.

An old time resident of Lockport, died in Chicago, on Wednesday, April 13th (1910), at the age of 77 years. He was born in Greensborough, Vermont, in June, 1833, and came to the County with his parents in 1837, when but a child of four years. He first lived in Plainfield, but in 1851 removed to Lockport, and that was his home until a few years ago.

William L. STOLL.

Who died in San Francisco, California, April 23rd, was born in New York City, June 24th, 1848. He came to Mokena, in Will County, when but a small child, and that was his home until some 25 years ago, when he removed to Joliet. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

A native of Homer Township, died at his home in Sebastopol, California, on Sunday, the 2nd, inst. (1910), at the age of 73 years. He was born September 20th, 1837, and Will County was his residence until a few years ago, when he removed to the far West. He married Miss Mary MUNSON in 1862, and she survives him. Mr. Weeks was the only surviving member of this Association who assicted in its organization in 1880.

Mrs. Alice M. CHIDSEY.

Anative of Lockport, died at her home there on Thursday evening, April 28th (1910), at the age of 62 years. Mrs. Chidsey was born December 11th, 1847, and had always lived in the town. She was married to Darwin CHIDSEY, in June, 1871, and he survives her.

Mrs. Marie KILLY.

Wife of John KILLY, of the Township of Wesley, died at her home there Tuesday, May 10th, aged 76 years. She was born near Elmira, N. Y., in 1834, and came to Will County when quite young. She had been a member of the Association since 1882. She was married to Mr. Killy, December 25th, 1870.

John BUTLER.

One of the best known of all of Joliet’s citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. A. MATEER, on Exchange street, on Wednesday, May 4th (1910), at the good old age of 87 years. He was born in London, England, April 12th, 1823, and came to this country with his parents when but two years old. He came to Joliet in 1865, and this has since been his home. He was a soldier in the Civil War and did good service. Mr. Butler was married to Miss Martha WELLS, January 1st, 1845. She preceded him in death, September 22nd, 1899. He had been blind for 28 years.

Thomas DIXON.

An old and well known resident of Florence Township, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. BLOGG, in Symerton, on Friday, May 1t3h (13th, 1910), at the age of 84 years. He was born in Laxton, England, February 19th, 1826, and came to this County in 1858. He was married to Miss Mary Ann TAYLOR, of Laxton, she dying December 20th, 1906.

Herman E. BOVEE.

An old resident of Jackson Township, died at his home there on Sunday, May 5th (1910), aged 62 years. He was born in Kingsville, Ohio, October 8th, 1847, and came to Jackson with his parents when but seven years old. He was married to Miss Ettie WICKES, January 8th, 1871, and she survives him.

Miss Louise FRASER.

She came with her parents to Plainfield when but a small child and that has since been her home. She passed away June 2d, (1910), at the age of 70 years.

Granville HYLAND.

Died at his home in Plainfield, Friday, June 3rd (1910), at the age of nearly 77 years. He was born in Roxbury, Vermont, and came to Plainfield with his parents in 1842.

Isaac Cook NORTON.

A life long resident of Will County, died at his home in Joliet, on Sunday, June 26th (1910), at the age of 60 years. He was born in Lockport in 1850, and had always lived in the County.

Nicholas BAUER.

A veteran of the Civil War, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. A. SCHEIDT, in Joliet, Sunday, June 26th (1910), at the age of 83 years. He was a native of Germany, and came to Joliet 45 years ago.

Mrs. Margaret KENNEDY.

Widow of the late Thomas KENNEDY, of Wilton, died at her home there, July 5th (1910), at the age of nearly 73 years. She came to Channahon some 65 years ago, and that was her home until her marriage in 1868, when herself and husband removed to Wilton. She was born in Detroit, Mich., August 26th, 1837.

Mrs. Mary E. RUSSELL.

For many years a well known resident of Manhattan, died in Leechville, N. C., July 8th (1910), at the age of 82 years. She was the eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clark BAKER, of Manhattan, and came there in 1849, where she resided until a few years ago.

Simeon S. TYLER.

A native of Will County, died at his home on South Eastern avenue, in Joliet, on Monday, July 25th (1910), at the age of 61 years. He was born in Plainfield, May 1st, 1849, and was married to Miss Lovice TOWNE, November 18th, 1874, she survives him.

Elias CELARIUS.

One of Monee’s oldest citizens, died at the home of his son, August (CELARIUS), on Tuesday, July 26th (1910). He was a native of Germany, and was born there August 26th, 1825. He came to Monee in 1850, and that was thereafter his home.

William G. CUTSHAW.

For nearly sixty years a well known resident of Florence Township, died at the St. Joseph Hospital, in Joliet, on Friday, July 30th (1910), at the age of nearly 85 years.

Hon. John KOLSTEDT.

An old and highly respected citizen of Monee, died at his home there on Saturday, July 20th (1910), aged 74 years. He was born in Hesse Cassel, Germany, May 22d, 1836, and came to this country with his parents when but a boy. Some years later he settled in Monee, and that was thereafter his home. In 1861 he married Miss Helen ROSS, and she with eight of their ten children, survive him. Mr. Kolstedt was a man of ability and one greatly honored and respected by his fellow citizens. He was often called upon to fill offices of trust and responsibility, all of which he filled with the strictest honesty and integrity.

Adolphus YOUKER.

Of Joliet, died August 2d (1910), at his home on East Benton street, at the age of 77 years. He was born in Prescott, Canada, October 20th, 1832, and came to Lockport in 1854, and to Joliet in 1889.

Edward EWING.

An old pioneer of Plainfield, passed away on Saturday morning, August 13th, last (1910), aged 84 years. He was born in Orleans County, Vermont, May 8th, 1825, and came to Plainfield with his parents in 1837, that town having ever since been his home. Mr. Ewing was married to Miss Catherine VANDER VOORE, and she survives him.

Daniel RICHARDS.

One of the Oldest of the Will County pioneers, died at his home in the Township of Jackson, at the age of 84 years. Mr. Richards was born in Herkimer County, N. Y., August 4th 1826, and came to Will County in 1852. He settled in the Township of Jackson, and there has since been his home. He was married to Miss Elmira COOLEY, of Huron County, Ohio, December 10th, 1848, and she with two children, Eurastus (RICHARDS) and Mrs. Lewis F. GOUGAR, of New Lenox, survive him.

Mrs. Roscella BECK.

Of Lockport, died at her home, August 14th (1910), aged 85 years. She was born in Grafeutal, Germany. June 12th, 1825, and came to Lockport with her husband, the late John BECK, in 1850.

Jabez HARVEY.

An old time resident of Will County, and the man who first suggested the forming of the Association, in 1880, died at his home in Sabetha, Kansas, August 17th (1910), aged nearly 80 years. Mr. Harvey was born in Quebec, January 20th, 1831, and when but six years old came to Will County with his parents, and a few years later they settled in Wilton, which was his home until some ten years ago when he removed to Kansas. He was one of the organizers of the Association and the first vice president for the town of Wilton, and President in 1899.

Mrs. Rosana McQUADE.

One of the pioneer residents of Joliet, died at her home here on Wednesday, August 17th (1910), aged 84 years. She was a native of Ireland, but came to Joliet when young, and this was thereafter her home. Her husband, Owen McQUADE, died several years ago.

Mrs. Louise FOLK.

Widow of the late Dr. Henry FOLK, of Peotone, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Michael COLLINS, in Peotone, Friday morning, August 19th (1910), at the age of 85 years. She was a native of Germany, but came to this country with her parents when but nine years old. She was married to Dr. Folk in 1843, and in 1851 they came to the Township of Wilton, and Will County was thereafter her home.

Mrs. James BASKERVILLE.

Wife of James BASKERVILLE, of Florence Township, was a native of County Tipperary, Ireland, and was born there November 1st, 1839. She was married to Mr. Baskerville in February 1860, and has been a resident of the County since 1847. She passed away at her home August 24th, last (1910).

Mrs. Sarah PEARSON.

Of Peotone, died Monday, August 29th (1910), aged 82 years. She was born in Sussex, England, July 3rd, 1828, and came to Will County in 1852, making her home in the town of Will, but some twenty years ago removed to Peotone.

John BOYLAND.

Of Manhattan, a pioneer of the town and its oldest inhabitant, died at his old home there on Thursday, September 1st, last (1910), at the great age of 94 years. Mr. Boyland was a native of the County Cavan, Ireland, and was born October 22d, 1815. He came to America in 1837, and settled in Manhattan some 50 years ago.

Mrs. Honora BOWE.

Formerly a well known resident of eastern Will County, died at the home of her son, Phillip (BOWE), in Chicago, August 26th (1910), aged 70 years. She was the wife of Moses BOWE, for many years a resident of Monee, an engineer on the Illinois Central Railroad. She was married to Mr. Bowe, May 6th, 1860.

Mrs. Catherine M. CASSELBERRY.

Widow of the late Col. Fred BARTLESON, who was killed at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, June 23rd, 1864. She was married to Col. Bartleson by the late Rev. Edward SAVAGE, of the Baptist Church, June 11, 1858. Some two years after the death of Col. Bartleson, she married J. M. CASSELBERRY, of Philadelphia. Mrs. Casselberry, whose maiden name was Catherine M. MURRA, came to Joliet when but ten years of age, and was adopted by her uncle and aunt, the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin H. DEMMOND. Mrs. Casselberry died in Chicago, Saturday, September 3rd, last (1910), at the age of 76 years.

Miss Mary BRAY.

Of Joliet, died Sunday, September 11th (1910), aged 91 years. She was born in Queen County, Ireland, in 1819, and came to Joliet in 1852, since which time she has resided here.

Mrs. Roxanna WRIGHT.

Widow of the late Winthrop WRIGHT, of Plainfield, died in Denver, Colorado, September 14th, at the age of nearly 90 years. Mr. Wright died December 27th, 1902. Mrs. Wright settled in Plainfield in 1840, soon after her marriage and that was her home until eight years ago.

Joseph REICHMAN.

Of Joliet, died at his home on South Richards street, on Monday morning, October 3rd instant, aged 74 years. He was a native of Germany, but came to Joliet in the spring of 1857. Mr. Reichman married Miss Anna Koch in 1869, and sher survived him.

Mrs. Corinza Burr SMITH.

Widow of the late Charles C. SMITH, of Channahon, who died January 27th, 1892, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry HICKS, in Joliet, on Friday, September 30th, last (1910), aged 79 years. She was born June 19th, 1831, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and came to the county in 1850. She was married to Mr. Smith, July 24th, of that year and they settled in Channahon, where she has since resided. Mrs. Smith was one of the oldest of the members of the Association, having joined it in 1884.

Mark W. HUNT.

Of Frankfort Township, died there September 30th, last (1910), aged 80 years. He was born in Somersetshire, England, March 7th, 1830, and first came to Will County, July 3rd, 1848. Mr. Hunt was united in Marriage to Miss Martha B. OWEN, in 1856, she dying several years ago.

Mrs. Frances GOODSPEED.

Of Joliet, died at her home on Union street, on Monday, October 3rd, inst. (1910), aged nearly 80 years. She was the widow of the late Judge Fransis GOODSPEED, and was born in Herkimer County, N. Y., November 30, 1830. She came to Joliet in 1867.
