Pioneers’ Necrology List For 1915-16 By Estelle M. Castle
During the year from October, 1915, to October this year, the ranks of the pioneers of Will county have been visibly thinned. Two years ago there were recorded 114 deaths from within and outside the membership of the Will County Pioneers Association. Last year 227 was the number, and this year 433.
To the younger generation these pioneers have, in their lifetime, offered examples of integrity and stability that have given character to the community life of Will county.
As necrologist, I present the following, as near a complete list as was available, of the settlers called to their eternal reward.

This is great! I finally have a death date for my 2nd great grandfather.
Thank you so much for posting this detail. My grandfather’s grandfather was James McKaig; DOD Jan 15, 1916 .
Details I’ve yet to determine are his grave site location and whether he had 1 or 2 wives… The 1880 Census has him living in Braidwood on School Street with wife Jacobina, his daughter Mary & son John. The 1900 Census indicates that James is now a widower, is living with daughter Mary & her husband Arthur, and sons John & David.
Another record found online lists a wife named Bernice Thompson as the mother of Mary when Mary married Arthur Blood (my great grandfather) on June 28, 1894 in Braidwood. Are Bernice & Jacobina the same person? If you could point me to someone or some resource that might give clarification on marriage details as well as their final resting places would be greatly appreciated! Finding anything on either James or Jacobina’s parents would be a plus!!! I hope to travel to Scotland this fall and would love to visit ancestral sites If determining the correct lineage.
Lora, Edward Blood, brother to your Arthur, is my great-great-grandfather making the two of us cousins! What a random meeting as I came to this searching for my Bannon relatives.
I’d love to help you search for James’ details, but I’m on vacation without my computer. I can help in a few weeks!
Pretty neat! My father, James Blood (b. 1932 – Joliet, d. 2022 – Mpls) left Will County upon graduation from the U of IL in 1955 and worked in South Bend, IN from 1955-64 before moving the family to Minneapolis. Descending from James are sons David & James, and grandsons Taylor & Jace. I actually just returned from Jace’s HS graduation party and passed on to him James’ copy of The Story of the Bloods by Roger Harris. My hope is that he’ll continue the pursuit to discover more about his roots.
It’s because of my niece’s interest in visiting Scotland that I’m researching the McKaig side of the family. I remember visiting my great grandmother, Mary McKaig Blood (b. 1874 d. 1965) who had lived in a grand house on Cass Street in Joliet (near a Dog n Suds!) And, while she & Arthur’s graves may be found at Elmhurst Cemetery, I can find no documentation on her parent’s burial sites, nor marriage. It’s only from Census data that I gather their approximate vital records – James McKaig (b. about 1941 in Scotland d. 1916 Joliet) Jacobina / Bernice? (b. about 1848 Scotland d. ? IL ? ) James also appears in an IL Coal Mining accident report of 1897 that happened while living in Braidwood.
I’m hoping further documentation will support details I’m gathering on possible Scotland connections.
I look forward to sharing what I know about “our” relations in Will County.
