DEVERE, GRAHAM, MCGOWAN, WALSH; posted by Michael A. McGowan, Mar 25, 2000 Seeking McGowanÂ’s of County Mayo Ireland in Waupaca Co. Wisconsin and Will Co. Illinois Family immigrated abt. 1837 they may have come through Catholic French Canada Early on the family was in Waupaca Co. – What is now Clintonville, Wisconsin. The woman who copied this down died in 1975, so this lead is over 25 years old, This is supposedly from a tombstone in St. Rose Cemetery, Clintonville WI The piece of paper says, “Michael – Patrick Anthony John & Matilda McGowan came to America from Ireland Co. Mayo, Felix remained.” There’s another sentence, hard to read, looks like “Ellen Devere Klondoff Glenhest Co Mayo” I know the two siblings Matilda and John(#1) moved south to the Joliet, Illinois area, within only a few years of leaving Ireland. Matilda married Edward Graham in 1839 in Joliet. John married Margaret Ann McGowan (Also her maiden name)in February 1851 in Joliet. Margaret Ann is the daughter of Patrick McGowan and she was born in Co. Mayo in about 1823. Margaret had at least two brothers who also lived in the Wilton area – James born March 1821 and John(#2) born 1824. I have the name of a third man, Edward McGowan, I suspect he is probably a brother of Margaret Ann, as he and his family are buried close to other family members in Will County. Edward was born in 1825, he was also born in Co. Mayo There is some evidence that at least James came to the US via Catholic French Canada. Don’t know if that’s the route for the rest of that family as well. James had to be in Joliet by 1857 when he married. I do not know what happened to Anthony, Patrick, Felix or Michael –having just found them. But I have no evidence yet of them being in Will County. I don’t know if Ellen is a sibling, a spouse, or what, Maybe she’s their Mother, but for some reason she is not mentioned in the first sentence. I don’t know what the last sentence really says or means, I hope it is giving me the name of a town or Parish in Co. Mayo Ireland. Very interested in any leads, Thanks I have a lot of information on the next generations of these families if anyone is interested.

ANDERSON, CLAY, GRATRICK, POUNDS, ROBISON, SHINDLER; posted by Grace Cook, Sep 10, 2000 I am researching for information regarding my great-grandmother, Anna POUNDS(maiden name). She was married at least three times and I have been studying her postcard collection left to me which includes dates from 1906 through 1915. I have found many postcards written to my great-grandmother from W. J. GRATRICK. I found a Wilford GRATRICK on the SSDI list and it listed his last living address as Will County, Illinois. I thought that if I could find someone who knew about Mr. GRATRICK, perhaps they might have some information about Anna, as he seems to have courted her in 1909. He wrote mostly from Mount Vernon, Illinois to her address at 11-1/2 Sixth Street North; Minneapolis, Minnesota. He evidently traveled in that time period, as there are postcards to her from other places, too. He wrote every two to three days to her for a period of several months. They must have had a serious relationship. I do not believe that she married him, though. I also thought that if someone out there was a relative to Mr. GRATRICK, they might be interested in receiving copies of these postcards. (I will not part with the originals.) My great-grandmother was married to my great-grandfather, Frank Pierce SHINDLER, around 1884 or before, and it is believed they lived in Colorado. The SHINDLER family moved to Edison, Nebraska from Pennsylvania in 1865. Frank SHINDLER was a railroad engineer on a line from Nebraska to Holyoke, Colorado. Anna and Frank had one daughter (my grandmother) Grace Clara SHINDLER ROBISON, born 1885. Frank died when Grace was only 4 years old and Anna remarried Frank J. CLAY, possibly in North Dakota. His name may have been John F. CLAY or John F. CLAY may have been her father-in-law. Anna and Mr. CLAY had several more children and I am also trying to find information about them. I did find out that Anna had a brother Robert L. POUNDS living in Kansas City, Missouri around 1910. It is believed that Anna left Colorado or Nebraska and went to Grand Forks, North Dakota where she remarried, and then went to Minneapolis where she ran a boarding home at the Sixth Street address mentioned above. It appears that Mr. CLAY died in 1909 and sometime later Anna married Donald ANDERSON in Minneapolis. Where Mr. GRATRICK fits in here is unknown for sure. He may have just remained a friend. I thought since I found Wilford GRATRICK in Illinois, possibly it might be the same one who wrote to my great-grandmother from Mount Vernon, Illinois. I hope to hear information from someone regarding any of the names mentioned above. Thank you. Grace Cook
