Necrological Report Shows That Ninety and Nine Pioneers Answered Last Call During the Year of 1909

To the Officers and Members of the Pioneer Association of Will County:

The following members, relatives of members and old pioneers of the County have passed away since last we met. The list is a large one and among the names you no doubt will find the name of many old friend and acquaintance, whom you have known and cherished since childhood. The list of the old settlers is far from complete and yet it is of sufficient length to remind the survivors how fast those who first settled the county are passing away.

Mrs. Lydia Jane BARTLETT

Was born in Homer Township in 1830, and always lived in this county. She was the widow of the late Esra (Ezra) S. BARTLETT, of Joliet, who died May 29, 1901. The death of Mrs. Bartlett occurred September 1st, last (1908).

Mrs. Ella E. CHAMBERLIN,

Wife of George N. CHAMBERLIN, died at her home in Joliet on Thursday, September 3rd, 1908. She was born in Joliet, fifty-four years ago, and was the daughter of the late Charles E. (MUNGER) and Frances A. MUNGER. She was married to Mr. Chamberlin December 5th, 1876.

Mrs. Mary EATON

Who died at her home in Jackson Township on Saturday, September 12th, last (1908), at the age of 79 years, was born in County Antrim, Ireland, and there she was married to the late Daniel EATON. They emigrated to America in the early ’50s, and located at first on a farm in Kendall County, Illinois. There they resided seven years, when they removed to Jackson, and that was thereafter their home. Mr. Eaton died December 7, 1906.

Thomas H. McMASTERS

Died in Essex, Iowa, September 20th, last (1908), at the age of 65 years and seven months. He was born in Joliet, February 20th, 1843, and this was his home for many years.

Timothy GORMON (GORMAN)

One of the old residents of Channahon and a prominent business man of the village, died September 29th, last (1908), at the age of 79 years. He came to the village more than 50 years ago.

Andrew FERGUSON

Of Wheatland Township, came to the Township 56 years ago, and that hadsince been his home. He died October 11th, 1908, at the age of 85 years.

Reed JONES

Was born December 12, 1851, in London, Ohio. He came to Joliet when a young man and married Mary GRINTON, daughter of the late William GRINTON, of Joliet. They removed to California many years ago. His death occurred in Spokane, Washington, November 5th, last (1908).

Vincent L. D. BARNEY

Who died at his home near Marley, in this county, on November 12th, last (1908), was one of the pioneer farmers of the county. He was born in Rutland, near Watertown, New York, May 19th, 1823, and in 1847 he came to the county and bought the land that was thereafter his home. He was an honest and upright citizen.

Phineas B. COON

Who came to Lockport in 1847, died in that town, November 15th, last, (1908), at the age of 75 years.

Thomas C. DAVIDSON

Was born in the state of New York, in 1842. He came to the State with his parents when seven years old. He was a printer and worked at the trade for fifty years. His death occurred November 23rd, 1908.

Judson GREEN

Of Plainfield, died at his home on Main street in that village, November 26th, last (1908), at the age of seventy years. He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Haum George, of Plainfield, and Mrs. H. M. SNAPP, of Joliet.

Mrs. Anna GAYLORD

Died at the home of her son, W. W. GAYLORD, in Plainfield, November 28th, last (1908), at the age of 80 years. She was the widow of the late S. D. GAYLORD, of that town. She was born in Fulton County, N. Y., September 24th, 1828, and came to this County with her husband, in 1855. He died March 9, 1894.

William WINCKLER

Died at his home in Joliet, November 29th, 1908, at the age of 69 years. He came here in 1873 and was for more than thirty years one of the city’s most active business men.

Mrs. Nancy EATON EIB

Wife of George J. W. EIB, of Jackson Township, died at her home in that township October 15th, last (1908). She was born in that township, August 21st, 1861, and was married to Mr. Eib April 26th, 1893.

Lyman B. CARRIER

Of Joliet was born in Illinois in 1827 in 1827, and came to Joliet many years ago. His death occurred October 23rd, last (1908).

George ALEXANDER

Of Channahon, who died in that Town, October 29th, last (1908), at the age of 71 years, was born on Hickory Creek, in this County in 1837, and he had been a lifelong resident of the county. He. Was married to Miss Emma (BEDFORD), daughter of the late Captain Nelson BEDFORD, February 14th, 1860. He was one of the oldest of the native born sons of the county.

Joseph BRAUN

Was a native of Illinois, having been born in Naperville, in 1860. He came with his parents to Joliet in 1865, and here he had ever since resided. He was an active business man of the city since his majority. He died at his home in this city November 1st, 1908.

Richard WALLACE

Of Lockport, came there sixty years ago, and was therefore one of the town’s oldest residents. He was 63 years old at the time of his death, November 3rd, last (1908).

Mrs. Lydia SPRAGUE

One of the oldest of the old pioneers of the county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jonathan MATHER, on Nicholson street, in Joliet, on Monday, November 30th, last (1908), at the great age of ninety years. She was born in New York State, December 28, 1818, and came with her parents to this county in 1835, and was one of first school teachers in Dupage County. She was the widow of the late Thomas J. SPRAGUE, who died October 22nd, 1898.

Mrs. Clara Page CHRISTIAN

Widow of the late David L. CHRISTIAN, of Peotone Township, was born in New Hampshire, March 28th, 1833, and came to Illinois in 1839 with her parents. She was married to Mr. Christian, October 23rd, 1851, and they came to Peotone and settled on a farm that was thereafter her home. She died December 5th, last (1908), at the age of 75 years. Mr. Christian’s death occurred March 21, 1896.

Mrs. Clara Whitmore DE WITT

Wife of August DE WITT, died at her home in Chicago, December 7th, last (1908), at the age of 45 years. She was born in Channahon in 1863, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sumner WHITMORE.

Mrs. Hannah FINCH

Of Lockport, was born in Henrietta, New York, in 1824, and came west with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Lyman HAWLEY, who settled in Lockport in 1835. She was the last of a family of ten children born to her parents. She married Charles FINCH in Batavia, Illinois, in 1845, and who died there a few years later. Mrs. Finch died at her home in Lockport, December 13th, 1908.

Charles F. GRITZNER

One of the old and well known residents of Joliet, died at Richmond, Virginia, December 16th, last (1908), at the age of 70 years. He came to Joliet when but a child and this was his home for many years.

Mrs. Alice Clement CHANEY

Was born in Chester, New Hampshire, February 1st, 1857, and came to Joliet with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles CLEMENT, in 1862. She was married to S. D. CHANEY, February 1st, 1894. She was prominent in many good works in and about the city, among which are the Silver Cross Hospital and the Chase Avenue Settlement House. Her death occurred December 25th, 1908.

Mrs. Emily WHITMORE

Wife of Austin WHITMORE, of Channahon, was a native of Plainfield and had always lived in the county. Her death occurred December 28th, last (1908), at the age of 65 years.

Joseph JOHNSTON

Of Wilmington, was of Scotch birth, having been born in Wightonshire, Scotland, July 12th, 1833. He came to America in 1853, arriving in Joliet on the 30th of July. A few years later he removed to Wesley Township, and in 1893 to Wilmington, where his death occurred December 29th, last (1908).

Mrs. Christina VOIGHT

Died at her home in Monee, December 29th, 1908, at the age of 84 years. She had lived in the county fifty-nine years.

Mrs. Jane Whitten McINTYRE

Of Wilmington, was born at Darling, Canada, August 31st, 1825. She came to Illinois in 1838 and was married in Wilmington to the late A. J. McINTYRE, July 3rd, 1843. She passed away January 3rd, last (1909), at the age of 83 years.

Dr. Marion F. WILLIAMSON

One of the old practicing physicians of Joliet, died at his home on Collins street, January 7th, last (1909), at the age of 75 years. He was a native of Claremont County, Ohio, where he was born May 22nd, 1833. (Note: The Joliet Daily News, of the same date, gives his death date as January 6th. –L. B. Peet)

Edgar BUTTERFIELD

Died at his home in Joliet, January 7th, last (1909), at the age of 69 years. He was born in Morris, Otsego County, N. Y., October 20th, 1838, and came to the city some fifty years ago. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served almost five years in Co. B 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

Duncan McDOUGAL

Died at his home on Grover street, in this city, January 7th, last (1909), at the age of 69 years. He was born in London, Canada, August 20, 1839, and came to Joliet in 1868, where he has since resided. He was for many years an employee of the penitentiary, and later of the Illinois Steel Company.

Mrs. Dorothea SYMINGTON

Whose death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Warren T. CLARK, January 10th, last (1909), was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, October 8th, 1815. She was married to the late William SYMINGTON in 1837. Some 55 years ago they settled on a farm near the Joliet Mound, and that was their home until the death of Mr. Symington, some thirty years ago.

Mrs. Lucy Graves CRAWFORD

The widow of the late John CRAWFORD, of Manhattan, and one of the pioneer residents of the county, died in that town January 10th, 1909, at the age of 73 years.

John VAN HORN

Of Mokena, died at his home in that village, January 17th, (1909), at the age of 83 years. He was born in Fundy, New York, September 16th, 1825, and came to the west with his parents in the pioneer days. He was a soldier in the Civil War, being a member of Co. F., 88th Illinois Reg. And served through the war.

Mrs. Catherine Maria PAGE

Widow of the late Seneca PAGE, of Joliet, died at her home east of the city on January 17th last (1909), at the age of 82 years. Mr. Page died June 15th, 1876. They were among the oldest residents of the county.

Daniel PATTERSON

Of Wheatland Township, died at his home there January 20th, last (1909), at the age of 79 years. He was a native of Scotland, but came to America when but a boy and had lived the most of his life in Wheatland. He was a man who was highly respected by all who knew him.

Mrs. Maria TRUBY

Widow of the late Marshall TRUBY, of Troy Township, died at her home near Birds Bridge in that township, January 22nd, last (1909), at the age of 84 years. She came from her old home in Pennsylvania with her husband in 1870, and they settled on the farm that has since been her home. Mr. Truby died July 26th, 1897.

Jacob LEVEE

An old resident of Wheatland Township, died in Plainfield, January 24th, last (1909), aged 83 years. He was a native of Little Falls, Herkimer County, N. Y., where he was born December 24, 1826. Soon after his marriage in 1850, he came with his family to Wheatland, and that was his home until some 20 years ago, when he removed to Plainfield.

Mrs. Annie E. KNIGHT

Died in Lynn, Massachusetts, February 4th, last (1909), at the age of 74 years. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara CAMPBELL, formerly well known residents of West Joliet, and was born in the old homestead there.

George P. JONES,

Was born in South Solan, Madison County, Ohio, April 3rd, 1839. He came west some forty years ago and settled in Joliet. He was for many years one of the most prominent of the business men of the city. He was a member of the Methodist church for forty-eight years, and always took an active part in the earnest welfare of the church. His death occurred at his home on Kenmore avenue, Chicago, on February 10th, last (1909).

Harry F. CAGWIN

Who died in Lawton, Oklahoma, February 12th, 1909, at the age of 55 years, was a native of Joliet and was a son of the late F. L. CAGWIN, one of the earliest pioneers of the county. Harry was a resident of the city up to some four years ago, when he removed to the southwest on account of his health.

Mrs. Barbara WERNER

Widow of the late William WERNER, died at her home on Jefferson street, in Joliet, February 15th, last (1909). She was born in Trier Province of Rhine, Germany, May 5th, 1833, and had been a resident of Joliet fifty years. Mr. Werner died May 20, 1887, at the age of 56 years.

Mrs. Barbara STANLEY

Was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, 84 years ago, and came to America when but a young girl. She married the late Francis G. STANLEY in the State of New York and they came to Joliet in 1855. She was the only sister of the late George MONROE of this city. Her death occurred February 17th, last (1909).

Nicholas STANTON

Who died at his home in Joliet, February 23rd, 1909, at the age of 85 years, was born in Sligo, Ireland, August 2nd, 1823, and came to Joliet in 1869, where he has since resided.

Ruben F. STEVENS

Was born in Grafton, New Hampshire, August 29th, 1839, and removed to Joliet in 1870. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in the 2nd N. H. Reg. In April 1861, and later in the 6th Reg., where he served until the close of the war. His death occurred February 28th, last (1909).

Walker McDOWELL

Died in New Lenox Township March 5th, last (1909), at the age of nearly 91 years. He was born in Scotland but came to this country when quite a young man, and had made Joliet and vicinity his home for more than half a century.

Edwin PORTER

Was born in Granger, Ohio, April 19th, 1828. He came to Joliet in 1856 and from that time Joliet has been his home. He built a large brewery on the west bank of the canal and that was thereafter his business. He was married in Cleveland, Ohio, to Miss Almena A. CURTIS, who with one son, Harry (PORTER), and a daughter, Mrs. Charles R. PEARSON, survive him. He was elected mayor of Joliet in 1864, and held the office seven times. His death occurred March 13th, last (1909).

Jerome PADDOCK,

Died at his home in Homer Township, March 15th, last (1909), at the age of 59 years. He was a native of the town, and that had always been his home. The date of his birth being February 15th, 1850.

Henry C. CULLOM

Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. SCHIMPFF, in Peoria, March 16th, last, (1909), aged 60 years. He was formerly a well known resident of Joliet, coming here in 1870 to take charge of a large contract at the prison.

Mrs. Charlotte ROYCE

Was born in Willsborough, New York, October 9th, 1830, and died at her home in Dupage Township, March 19th, last (1909). She came to Illinois and to Dupage in 1852. She was married to the late Abner ROYCE in 1855, and moved to her home, where she has resided continuously since that time. Mr. Royce died June 14th, 1902.

Mrs. Mary A. GARNSEY

Widow of the late Judge C. B. GARNSEY, died at her home in Joliet, March 20th, last (1909). She was born in Herkimer County, N. Y., and in 1846 came with her father, the late John D. HENDERSON, to Wilmington, and was married to Mr. Garnsey November 4th, 1867.

Mrs. Sarah A. MARTIN

Was a native of Waterville, Maine, and came to Will County in 1856. She was the widow of the late Augustus R. MARTIN, who died July 30th, 1906. Mrs. Martin’s death occurred March 20th, 1909.

Mrs. Elizabeth FLICK

Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. R. KELLY, on North Center street, in Joliet, March 22nd, last (1909), at the age of 89 years. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1820, and came to Joliet in 1856. She was the widow of the late Joseph FLICK, of Joliet.

John HERATH

A resident of Plainfield for many years, died in that town March 24th, last (1909), at the age of 58 years.

Daniel F. HIGGINS

Was born in Dupage Township, May 2nd, 1849, and had always lived in the county. He was admitted to the bar and practiced his chosen profession up to a few months before his death, which occurred March 25th, last (1909).

Mrs. Anna SCHROEDER

Of Manhattan, wife of John SCHROEDER, of that town, died April 3rd, last (1909), at the age of 70 years. She was a native of Munden, Prussia, and was married to Mr. Schroeder, February 7th, 1859. She had lived in the county nearly fifty years.

John VARLEY

A pioneer of Wheatland Township, died at his home in Plainfield, April 6th, last (1909), at the age of 64 years. He was born in Yorkshire, England, August 31, 1845, and came with his parents to Wheatland in 1854, that being thereafter his home until a few years ago, when he removed to Plainfield.

Amos DODGE

Was born in Orland, Vermont, January 31st, 1835, and when but ten years old came to Will county with his parents. They settled at first in Dupage township, but after a few years went to Homer township, which was thereafter his home. At the breaking out of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 100th Illinois Regiment, and did good service until the close of the war. He died at his home in Homer April 6th, last (1909).

Theodore NOBLE

Was a native of Homer Township and was born in that town in 1841. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a highly respected citizen. His death occurred April 8th last, (1909), in Ashton, Kansas.

William MAPPS

A well known resident of Joliet died at his home in York, Nebraska, April 8th, 1909, at the age of 83 years. He was born in Shippensburg, Pa., January 31st, 1826. He came to Joliet when quite a young man and this was his home for forty years.

George RENKERT

Of Peotone township, one of the most respected citizens of that time, (…of that town, per the Joliet Daily News of the same date. – L. B. Peet) died at his home there, Sunday morning, April 11th, last (1909), at the age of 73 years. He was a native of France, but came to this country in July 1852, and to Peotone in 1862.

Howard SMILEY

A native of Plainfield, died in New Mexico, where he had gone for his health, April 18th, last (1909), at the age of 45 years. He was one of the prominent business men of the town. (The Joliet Daily News, of the same date, gives his date of Death as April 13th. – L. B. Peet)

Thomas DOIG

Of New Lenox, was one of the Pioneers of that township. He was a native of Scotland, but came to America with his parents when but six years of age. He had lived in New Lenox sixty years. His death occurred on April 19th, 1909.

Cyrus A. LEWIS

Of New Lenox was one of the pioneers and most respected men of that township. He was born in Decatur, New York, July 19th, 1824, and came to New Lenox in 1850, where he purchased a large farm, which has since been his home. He married Miss Emiline SEWARD in 1847. Her death occurred May 19th, 1908, while that of Mr. Lewis occurred nearly a year later, April 20th, 1909.

Mrs. Sophia SCHLUNTZ

Wife of Joachim SCHLUNTZ of Beecher, died April 25th, 1909, at the age of 70 years. She was born in Germany, December 12th, 1838, and came with her parents to America in 1866, they settling in Green Garden. Mr. and Mrs. Schluntz were married in 1867.

Mrs. Mary KELLY

Wife of Hon. Thomas J. KELLY, died at her home on Jefferson street, in Joliet on Monday, April 26th, last (1909). She was the daughter of Patrick FITZPATRICK, one of the earliest of the pioneers of Lockport, and was born on her father’s farm west of the village, January 22, 1843. She was married to Mr. Kelly, September 10, 1888, and Joliet has since been her home. She was one of the best of good women and an ornament to her sex.

Mrs. Bridget DALY

Who died at her home on South Broadway, in Joliet, on Tuesday evening, April 27th, 1909, was the wife of Eugene DALY, one of Joliet’s oldest and best known business men. She came to Joliet some 60 years ago, and on September 12th, 1852, she was united in marriage to Mr. Daly in St. Patrick’s church on Broadway, and on Thursday morning following her death the last rites were performed in the church over her remains. Her age was 84 years.

Lawrence RUBENSTEIN

Of Joliet, who died May 1st, last (1909), was one of the old residents of the county. He was a native of Germany, but came to this country when quite a young man. His age was 89 years.

Mrs. Louisa Belle CROMWELL

Died at her home in Cleveland, Ohio, May 10, 1909. She was the daughter of the late Levi M. CLAYES, one of the early pioneers of the county, and the first Postmaster in Frankfort township. She was born in that township, October 4th, 1865.

Mrs. Sarah W. ARRASMITH

Of Joliet, died at her home here, May 11th, (1909), at the age of 65 years and ten months. She was the wife of A. W. ARRASMITH, a soldier in the Civil War, and came to the county in 1864.

Mrs. Elizabeth BEZ

Who died at Wilmington, May 13th, last (1909), was the widow of the late George BEZ, who died May 11th, 1902. She was a native of Germany and came to the County in 1854. Her age was 82 years.

Delos V. A. WILLIAMS

Was a son of the late Julius C. (WILLIAMS) and Sarah WILLIAMS, and was born in New York in 1852. When but one year old he came to Joliet with his parents and this was his home for 25 years. He died in Los Angeles, California, May 15th, last (1909).

Frank W. YOUNG

The eldest son of the late Daniel C. YOUNG, one of the early pioneers of the county, died in Fresno, California, on Tuesday, May 18th, 1909, at the age of 62 years. He was born on what is known as the Sprague farm in Lockport, April 2nd, 1847.

William S. BURT

Was born in Wayne County, New York, July 6th, 1830, and came to Lockport in 1849. That was his home until nine years ago, when he removed to Joliet. He died May 18th, 1909.

Frank DALY

Of Lockport, was born in that town sixty years ago, and had always lived there. He died May 22nd, last (1909).

John C. GUNLOCK

Died in Detroit, Michigan, May 29th, last (1909), at the age of 71 years. He was an old resident of Joliet, coming here when but a small child, and this was his home for 30 years.

Michael PICKETT

A resident of Joliet for 57 years, died at his home in this city, on Friday morning, June 4th, at the age of 87 years. He was born in Galway, Ireland, in 1822, and came to Joliet in 1852.

James O’REILLEY

Was a native of County Cavena, Ireland, and came to this country when he was but a child. He came to Joliet in 1858 and this has since been his home. He died June 5th, 1909, at the age of 87 years.

Prof. Daniel H. DARLING

Was born in Painesville, Ohio, June 8, 1836, and died at his home on Whitley avenue, in Joliet, June 24th, last (1909). He was a graduate of Lake Erie College and came to Will county in 1855. He was principal of the Lockport schools for three years, and then came to Joliet. He was a soldier in the Civil War and attained the rank of Colonel.

Mrs. Rachel HIGINBOTHAM

Of Chicago, was born in the town of New Lenox, in 1844, and was the elder daughter of the late Doctor DAVIDSON, of that town, and a sister of Mrs. J. M. THOMPSON, who died in New Lenox, April 16th, 1905. She was the wife of H. N. HIGINBOTHAM, a prominent business man of Chicago. Her death occurred June 25th, last (1909).

Frank E. DEMMOND

A son of the late Charles DEMMOND, one of the early pioneers of Joliet, died in Chicago, June 26th (1909), aged 76 years. He came to Joliet with his parents when but a small child.

Nicholas YUNKER

Of Manhattan, died at his home in that town on Monday, June 26th, 1909, at the age of 76 years. He was a native of Switzerland, but came to this country when quite young, and settled in this county over fifty years ago.

Edmund RELF

Of Jackson township, died at his home there Monday morning, June 27th (1909), at the age of 72 years. He was a native of Kent, England, but came here when but twelve years old. He had lived in this county forty-five years.

Frank E. BROWN

Of Joliet, was a son of the late John Brown, long a well known resident of the city, and was born here 51 years ago. He died June 27th (1909).

August YATES

A resident of Florence township for more than 50 years, died June 29th (1909), at the age of 77 years.

Bridget DILLON

Of Joliet, died July 6th (1909), at the age of 69 years. She was a native of Ireland, but had lived in Joliet since she was seven years old.

Robert SAMPSON

Of Peotone, was born in England, but came to this country with his parents when he was but a small child. They settled first in Plainfield, but some few years later removed to Peotone, which place has since been his home. He passed away July 12th (1909), at the age of 61 years.

George RUDER

One of the oldest and best known citizens of Eastern Will county, died at his home in the township of Monee on Tuesday, July 27th (1909), at the age of 91 years and three months. He left nine sons, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a host of old time friends to mourn his decease. He was born in Germany and came to America with his parents when a boy. He went to Monee 65 years ago and settled on a place that has ever since been his home.

Mrs. Jane GEIST

Of Plainfield, died at her home there on Saturday, July 31st (1909), at the age of 78 years. She was born in Renrock, Ohio, October 26, 1831, and was married to the late Hiram S. GEIST February 22nd, 1855. Mr. Geist died July 14, 1905. After their marriage they removed at once to Plainfield, and that has since been her home, she having lived for 48 years in the house where she died.

Mrs. Elizabeth WILHELMI

A resident of Joliet for 67 years, passed away July 30th (1909), at the age of 78 years. She was a native of Germany, but came to this country with her parents when she was but a child. She was the widow of Nicholas WILHELMI, who died March 17, 1907.

Mrs. Mary HILLS

Wife of Edward Hills, Sen. Of Joliet. Died July 30th (1909), at the age of 64 years. She was born in France but came to Lockport with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis MEYER, in 1855, and this county has since been her residence.

Mrs. Ardelia ROWLEY

Of Homer, was born in Cayuga Co., N. Y., February 17, 1818, and came to the town of Homer with her parents in 1835. She married the late J. B. ROWLEY April 13, 1836, and they settled on the farm that was thereafter her home. She passed away August 2nd (1909).

George PICKEL

Was born in Albion, New York, July 3rd, 1839. In 1848 the family removed to this county and settled south of the then village of Joliet, on the Mill Road. He enlisted in Co. E, 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, August 8, 1862, and served till the close of the war with the best of a record as a soldier. His death occurred at the home of his brother, Charles (PICKEL), one mile south of the city, on Monday, August 2nd (1909).

Malcolm STEWART

A native of Wilmington, died in that city on Monday, August 2nd (1909), at the age of 45 years. He was a son of John H. STEWART, and a grandson of the late Col. Peter STEWART, one of the first of the pioneer settlers of the town.

Peter WARD

Of Lockport, died Tuesday morning, August 3rd (1909), aged 82 years. He was one of the older of the very old settlers of the town.

Henry SCHMUHL

A resident of New Lenox, for fifty-six years, died at his home there August 4th (1909), at the age of 83 years. He was a native of Germany, was married to Miss Marie KITZERON on December 31, 1852, and in July of the next year they came to Mokena, and some three years after settled on the farm that has since been their home.

Mrs. Sarah BECKER

An old resident of Plainfield, died in Norwich, Conn., August 4th (1909), at the age of 77 years. She was the widow of Jacob S. BECKER, who died in Daytona, Florida, November 27, 1903 (possibly 1902 – L. B. Peet). Mrs. Becker came to Plainfield in 1845, and that was her home until the family removed to Daytona, in 1881.

Henry BURKHART

The pioneer resident of Dupage township, died at his home in that town, Thursday, August 5th (1909), at the age of 90 years. He was a native of Germany, but came to America in 1845, and soon after came west and here has since been his residence.

Mrs. Sarah A. WILLIAMS

Wife of Henry G. WILLIAMS, of Elwood, died at her home there August 9th (1909), at the age of 69 years. She was born in Georgia, Vermont, April 20th, 1840, and was married to Mr. Williams in 1857, and two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding. They came to Will County in 1864.

Mrs. Evelyn McCLOSKEY

Of Plainfield, died at the McCloskey home in that village on Wednesday, August 11th (1909), at the great age of 97 years. She was the widow of the late E. J. McCLOSKEY, and came there in 1866.

Seth J. WILLIAMS

Came to Joliet with his parents in 1844, and has been a resident of the place since that time. He was born in Laraine County, Ohio, in July, 1837. His death occurred August 13th (1909).
