Ranks Of Pioneers Thinning; Necrology List For One Year By Estelle M. Castle.

During the year from Oct. 1916 to Oct. 1, this year, the ranks of the pioneers of Will county, have been noticeably thinned. Three years ago there were 114 deaths from within and outside the membership of the Will County Pioneers’ Association, two years ago 227 was the number and last year 433. A slight decrease was shown this year with a total of (missing, 317 by my count – L. B. Peet)

To the younger generation, these pioneers have, in their lifetime, offered examples of integrity and ability that have given character to the community life of Will county.

As necrologist I present the following as near a complete list as was (missing)ilable of the old settlers called to their eternal rest.

Oct. 3, 1916 – Charles H. MOULTON, 72, at his home in Wilmington; an Alton conductor for thirty years.

Oct. 4, 1916 – Olaf PETERSON, 63 (possibly 68); resident of Joliet thirty years.

Oct. 4, 1916 – Ignatius SITTEL, 68 (possibly 63), at Lockport, (missing).

Oct. 5, 1916 – Mrs. Caroline Mathilda DODGE, died at her home in Crete, where she had lived since 1837.

Oct. 5, 1916 – Mrs. Ellen Louise KENDALL, 74, a resident of Lockport for forty years.

Oct. 5, 1916 – Charles MOULTON, pioneer, at his home in Ritchie, where he had lived for (missing)y years.

Oct. 6, 1916 – Mrs. Amelia Marie HEILSCHER, the mother of Ernest HEILSCHER, a resident thirty-five years.

Oct. 6, 1916 – James BARNHART, 76, civil war veteran and editor of the first newspaper in Peotone, where he lived for fifty-six years.

Oct. 24, 1916 – Henry JENSEN, 71, pioneer resident at New Lenox for fifty years.

Oct. 24, 1916 – Mrs. Margaret WALSH, 69, at her home in Wilmington, burial in Manhattan.

Oct. 26, 1916 – John C. BELLS, (illegible, possibly 68), in Joliet, burial in Chicago; uncle of John, Mary and Julia BRAY.

Oct. 31, 1916 – Mrs. Thomas LACEY, 57; lifelong resident of Florence township; buried in Wilmington.

Nov. 1, 1916 – Silas G. PRATT, (illegible age); concert pianist and composer; for many years teacher of piano in Joliet; died in Pittsburgh, (missing, presumed to be Pa. – L.B. Peet); buried in Chicago.

Nov. 3, 1916 – Mrs. William C. ALBERTS, 65, at her home in Peotone; a resident of Will county forty years.

Nov. 4, 1916 – Andrew JACOBSON, 72; a prominent resident of Wilmington; died of (hea)rt failure in that city.

Nov. 7, 1916 – Mrs. Elizabeth VRO (illegible, 4 or 5 letters in name, the VR are the only letters clearly readable, the ending letter might be an “M,” or an “R” and another letter.– L. B. Peet) , 85, at her home in Wilmington, where she had lived for twenty-five years, and a resident of Illinois for more than seventy years.

Nov. 8, 1916 – Dr. James A. CLYNE, 58; a practicing physician in Joliet for thirty years, and a surgeon for the Alton railroad company for twenty years. He was a brother of John T. CLYNE.

Nov. 10, 1916 – Mrs. Ella M. BEDFORD, 51; a resident of Joliet for twenty-five years; died in Wilton Center, where she lived her girlhood days.

Nov. 11, 1916 – Mrs. John W. JOHNSON, 93; a resident of Will county for more than (missing)y years; died at the Salem Home for the Aged.

Nov. 13, 1916 – Henry T. TOMPKINS, 66, at St. Joseph’s hospital.(in Joliet– L. B. Peet)

Nov. 18, 1916 – Robert Gordon COOK, 57, a resident of Joliet all his life; the oldest engineer on the Santa Fe, in the service thirty-three years; pensioned a few months before his death.

Nov. 18, 1916 – Edward SAVAGE, 8_ (looks like 85), a former resident of Joliet, at his home in South Dakota.

Nov. 18, 1916 – Mrs. Dorothea KNOOP, 80, in Peotone where she had lived for fifty-two years.

Dec. 2, 1916 – John D. PAIGE, 79, of Joliet; mayor, chief of police, fire marshal for ten years, with several minor offices, and for ten years preceding his death township school treasurer.

Dec. 2, 1916 – Mrs. Louise MARTIN, 76, an old Lockport resident; died at her home in Chicago; burial in Lockport.

Dec. 2, 1916 – Mrs. John ELLIOT, an old resident of Wheatland, at the home of her daughter; burial in Scotch cemetery.

Dec. 2, 1916 – Charles A. STEINER, 57, a prominent Plainfield farmer; lived on a farm all his life; died at his home in Plainfield.

Jan. 2, 1917 – John Edward BUSH, 81, at his home in this city, pioneer grain merchant. Mr. Bush was a resident of Joliet for fifty-five years and lived forty-six years in the home where he died.

Jan. 5, 1917 – David R. SWEETWOOD, 68, at his home in Wilton Center.

Jan. 5, 1917 – Mrs. Emma Godfrey POTTER, 64, at her home in this city; a resident for thirty-one years.

Jan. 5, 1917 – Philip ARNOLD, 76, pioneer resident of Monee for forty-two years.

Jan. 6, 1917 – Thomas FEWTRELL, 58, in point of service the oldest employee of the Illinois Steel company in Joliet, a period of forty-six years.

Jan. 6, 1917 – Mrs. Elliott Rogers GIFFIN, 58, Green Garden pioneer and many years resident of Lockport, at her home in Ringstead, Iowa.

Jan. 10, 1917 – Mrs. Emma VAN HORNE, 74, pioneer of Will county and resident of Joliet forty-two years; prominent in church work and “mother” of the Marguerite chapter of the Eastern Star, and Bethany Shrine White Shrine of Jerusalem.

Jan. 10, 1917 – Mrs. Anna EATON, 70, pioneer resident of Lockport, at the home of her brother in Kenosha, Wisconsin; burial in Lockport.

Jan. 10, 1917 – Frances Ernest FLOYD, (perhaps Francis) 71, an old resident, at his home in Joliet.

Jan. 10, 1917 – Philip GARDNER, 84, at his home in this city.

Jan. 10, 1917 – Miss Mary Frances MARKERT, 54, in her home in Wilmington, where she lived all her life.

Jan. 12, 1917 – Mrs. Sarah A. LISCOMB, 81, an old resident, in Soldiers’ Widows’ Home; burial in Lockport.

Jan. 12, 1917 – William A. SPANGLER, 72, a resident of this city for fifty years.

Jan. 16, 1917 – Mrs. Elizabeth Mary FLOYD, 67, followed her husband, who died six days previous; they were residents of Joliet and vicinity for forty years.

Jan. 16, 1917 – Mrs. Anna Scott MEERS, 49, wife of Attorney Eneisha MEERS, died following an operation. Mrs. Meers was prominent in social and church circles and president of the Ladies Visitation and Aid society.

Jan. 17, 1917 – Mrs. Julia A. MATHER, 79, pioneer Will county, at her home in Joliet.

Jan. 17, 1917 – Henry ANGLEMIRE, 78, an old resident, at his home in Chicago, burial in Joliet.

Jan. 19, 1917 – James A. NOLAN, 89, pioneer resident, at the home of his daughter in this city.

Jan. 20, 1917 – Joseph E. GOUGAR, 83, at his home in Joliet. He was born in New Lenox and was the oldest native born citizen of the Hickory creek settlement east of Joliet, and said to be the second white child born in Will county.

Jan. 21, 1917 – William DOUBLEDAY, 70, a resident of Joliet thirty-five years and employe of the steel mills thirty-three years; a well known musician and organizer and leader of church choirs.

Jan. 21, 1917 – William DRIFUS, 67, native pioneer of Homer and resident of DuPage for thirty years, at his home in Naperville. (Just, exactly, what is a “native pioneer?” This is a good example of the debasement of the term “pioneer” over the life span of The Old Settlers’ Association. Feb. 18 (possibly 19), 1917 – Dr. Roland B. REED, 77, an old Joliet resident, in Port Orange, Florida. Mr. Reed was active in railroad construction and a surgeon in the civil war.

March 8, 1917 – William COCHRAN, 96, retired farmer and leader in the Wheatland Scotch community for sixty years, at the home of his daughter in Oswego township..

March 9, 1917 – William H. VAN FLEET, 82, at his home in this city.

March 11, 1917 – Frank W. CULVER, 59, a resident of Plainfield township all his life, at the farm.

March 13, 1917 – William FITZGERALD, (unreadable, possibly 53,58,63,68 or maybe, even 88 any one would be almost a guess. – L. B. Peet), at his home in Manhattan; burial in Wilmington.

March (possibly 13), 1917 – Henry SWIVAL, 82, for forty-nine years a resident of Florence township, at his home near Wilmington.

March 13, 1917 – Mrs. Joschim (possibly Jouchim or Joachim) JARCHON, at the home in Peotone. She had been a resident of Green Garden and Peotone townships for sixty years.

March 13, 1917 – Simon SHAFER, 78, a resident of DuPage for many years, died in St. Petersburg, Florida.

March 14, 1917 – Elvis POTTER, 66, veteran Santa Fe engineer, at the home of his son in Chicago; burial in Higinbotham cemetery.

March 19, 1917 – Mrs. Mary FANT, resident of Joliet for fifty years.
