William RAUWORTH

W RAUWORTH Called from This Life

William RAUWORTH died at Glidden, Iowa, Saturday. Aug. 22 after a six weeks illness with heart trouble. About two months ago he left Peotone to make a visit with his children at Glidden and to attend to business matters in connection with his farm there. A few days after his arrival he was taken sick with serious heart trouble. Everything that expert medical skill could command was done to prolong his life, but without avail.

He seemed to understand his case perfectly and realized that the end was near. He was not afraid. With the utmost composure he conversed with his children, adjusted business matters and expressed himself as ready for the great change. He suffered much but bore it patiently.

Mr. RAUWORTH was born in Sheffield, England, Dec. 29, 1837, and was 76 years, 7 months and 23 days old at the time of his death. He was born of Christian parents and received such early training as to lay the foundation of worthy manhood. His father followed the combined occupation of farmer and butcher, and desired that his son should make that his calling. But he was adverse to the butcher business and became a druggist’s apprentice, taking a full seven year’s course in pharmacy. Later he decided to make farming his life work emigrated to America to take advantage of the opportunities this country offered.

He landed at New York April 12, 1862, and at once came to the Wilton settlement and settled on a farm in the town of Rockville, Kankakee county, and this was his home for over forty years. Retiring from the activities a few years ago, he moved into Peotone.

Mr. Rauworth was united in marriage to Miss Miriam SOLLITT Jan. 1, 1865. Seven children were given to bless this union. All of them are living. They are Chas. E. Rauworth, Mrs. E. M. WHEELER and Mrs. W. R. STORMS, of Glidden, Iowa; Mrs. E. A. BURKITT, Chicago; S. H. RAUWORTH, who lives on the old homestead in Rockville; W. O. RAUWORTH, Webster City, Iowa; and Mrs. Wallace H. GINTER, Peotone. Nineteen grandchildren also survive him, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah ARMSTRONG, Glidden Iowa, and Mrs. Alice ROBINSON, Manhattan. His wife companion of nearly fifty years, preceded him to the spirit world on June 17, 1911.

William RAUWORTH was man of sturdy character and sterling manhood. To know him was to respect him. He cherished the highest ideals of honesty and integrity. He had only contempt for the low and base. Whatever success he attained in life was by the most honorable methods. His personality was marked and strong. Of a reticent disposition he was slow to make acquaintances, but to those who won his confidence, he was a steadfast friend.

He was deeply interested in things which make for the uplifting of the community and in all matters of public welfare or concern. Many times in conversation with the writer he urged the importance of good schools and churches and the value of a public library and places where the young could congregate for athletics and other forms of amusement, and he expressed himself as being ready to help in any good movement.

He was unquestionably a man of faith and earnest religious nature in a broad way. All his life he was an attendant and liberal supporter of the church. For many years, he served on the official board of the Methodist Episcopal church. He honored the Sabbath by keeping it sacred. With his death. a long and useful life has closed. His memory will live long with those who know him best.

The remains were brought from Glidden to Peotone Tuesday morning and taken to the home on East Main street. The funeral was held at the house at ten o’clock Wednesday morning. Rev. N. R. HINDS conducted the service. Interment was in the family lot in the Peotone cemetery. The casket was buried beneath a wealth of floral pieces, and many old friends and neighbors attended the service. – The Peotone Vedette, Aug 27, 1914 (Thursday)

Col. RICHARDS

Battle Near Raymond, Miss. Death of Col. Richards. From the report of the battle near Raymond, on last Tuesday, it appears the Old 20th bore a conspicuous and honorable part, and we are called to mourn the death of Col. RICHARDS, who fell at the head of his glorious regiment. From the list of wounded we notice the following names; Otta LAUBURNER, Co. F; Frank HAGERMAN, Co. K; Albert W. PIERSON, Co. F; Samuel WARNER, Co. A; David ULRICH, Co. D; Jas. JONES, Co. E; James THOMPSON, Co. I; Allen M. GREGOR, Co. C; Norris ASHLEY, Co. H; George BUNDEVER, Co. E; Wilsaw PARTLOE, Co. A; Chas. B. MASON, Co. A; Jacob Co. A; Andrew BROWN, Co. K; Robert SCUYLER, Co. K; A. P. SHELTON, Co. K; John G. HART, Co. I; Oscar HORSTENSTEIN, Co. G; James BRANDENBURG, Co. I; James McCABE, Co. D; Henry HALLOWAY, Co. A; Jacob COOK, Co. A.

(Note – With a magnifying glass the lower case “U’s” and “N’s” look much alike with the small print and blurry ink, and if the type setter shot them on his stick upside down they were interchangeable, so, names like Lauburner could be anburner. The transcriber with the help of the glass tried to detect the differences and the above is his best shot. Also, the Jacob without a surname may be the Jacob Cook mentioned last. Thanks to God, I don’t have to meet a newspaper publisher’s deadline! — L. B. Peet)

George W. RISLEY

(b.3 Apr 1810 – d.28 Sep 1880) The early train last Friday morning brought in the body of George W. RISLEY, from Hutchinson, Kansas, for interment in our beautiful cemetery of Oakwood. He may be regarded as among the old settlers here. He was born near Utica, N. Y., and in early life moved to Virginia, where he was at the commencement of the political disturbances resulting in the rebellion. Ardently attached to the Union he left the ill fated state in time to escape the devastation which swept over the territory where he was residing. His brother, Hamilton D. RISLEY, was residing in this county, and called his attention to these beautiful prairies, where he removed and tarried for many years, always engaged in the calling of agriculture. Five years ago he removed to Kansas, and engaged in the opening of a new farm in that state of peculiar battling history. The grasshoppers and other impediments which drove others away, were not formidable enough to drive him out, but he and his son battled their way, until now a well improved farm rewards their struggles. But indomitable will must after all succumb to the destiny of years, and death is an invincible ruler. In George W. RISLEY, he found a victim he might have passed for years to the benefit of those among whom he was located. Of social qualities of a very rare order, he was wholly unconscious of any feeling of grasping ambition. He found all his enjoyments in humbler walks of life, yet no man could sit down to enjoy his converse without immediately finding him endowed with rare intellect for one to be occupied in the field of labor. He had no enemies. All the old acquaintances which knew him here will breath a sincere and earnest sigh at hearing of his demise.

Mrs. George RISLEY

Sarah Eunice DAKIN RISLEY, wife of George W. RISLEY (b.4 Nov 1814-d.11 Jun 1892) Three score and seventeen years ago there came into the New Hampshire home of Samuel DAKIN and his wife one of the earth’s rare souls, and on the 11th of this month the Creator called the sweet spirit back to Himself, leaving only the beautiful house of clay behind. Sarah DAKIN, the youngest of a family consisting of one son and four daughters, possessed the priceless heritage of an honored name and most winning native traits. Descending from a family noted for sterling piety, intellectuality and nobility of character, she added grace to it all. When she left her father’s house and united her fortune to that of George RISLEY she took into the new home the same sunny disposition and willing heart that had characterized her girlhood. Disappointment and the sorrows which God sends His best beloved came early into her life, but being received as messengers of the eternal throne these only served to purify and uplift her every thought. Through long years the chastening work went on until to those who knew her in these later years she seemed pure gold, with scarely an earth stain on her. Five daughters and two sons came to claim and receive the full mead of mother love – Martha, now the widow of Judge S. W. RANDALL, of this city; Willis, whose home is in Evanston, Ill.; Cynthia, wife of John RISLEY, of Nickerson, Kan.; Mary, whose home has for fifteen years been at New Hartford, N.Y.; Sarah, now Mrs. Frank CALAIS, of this city; Sophie, who has for years been a valued teacher in the public schools of Cairo, this state, and DAKIN of Nickerson, Kan. These all survive their mother, together with sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildrn, who “arise up and call her blessed.” In response to messages concerning their mother’s failing health six of the children came from near and far to look once more upon her face, realizing with tender sadness that “mother was going to sleep.” Her pastor, the Rev. Mr. CAMP, had been most thoughtful in repeated ministrations and on the occasion of one of his visits Mrs. RISLEY desired her children to kneel about her bedside, which they did with the same simplicity of faith as when in childhood they had clustered at her knee for the good night prayer. She was regarded by her children with a feeling akin to worship. And they returned her affection in abundant measure. Her last years have been made a constant joy by the tender care and unwearied devotion that have been lavished upon her by the daughter whose home has been hers as well. On the evening of Saturday, June 11, she left her dear ones for her “house not made with hands,” and the following Monday afternoon her friends gathered at Mrs. RANDALL’s home to pay her their last tribute. Her casket lay in a room whose air was odorous with the breath of many flowers, but their incense seemed nothing to the fragrance of her life. A frail, bowed little old lady with soft white curls clustering about her face, she lay there with the love-light quenched from her eyes but the same old smile was on the gentle lips. She was God’s own gentlewoman, with His peace on her brow – that was all. A woman who had known the cares and trials of domestic duties, her daughters can yet unite in saying that they “never knew mother to say one unkind word.” The dew of perpetual youth rested on her so that, as a life-long friend has said. “She was always a girl among the girls”. It is impossible for one so in touch and sympathy with young hearts ever to grow old. Brought up in the Episcopal faith, her church was always a great comfort to her and her religion was manifest in the daily life which is more than preached word. Of her own family there still abides one sister, Mrs. Martha FOSTER, of New Hartford, N. Y., who is one whom the whole town loves and of kin to all who come in contact with her. Having long passed the “four score” limit she is allowed to tarry yet a little longer for the comfort and example of a younger generation. Mrs. RISLEY is gone; and we laid her to rest in Oakwood, “knowing here endeth the measure of all her beautiful years.” But the memory is ours, and we are led to thank God that “such as these have lived and died.”

Catherine ROETTER

Funeral services for Grandma ROETTER one of the oldest settlers of this county, were held Tuesday afternoon, March 15, with a short service at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Catherine RIPPE, and at the South Lutheran church, Rev. G. Klatt, the pastor being in charge. The services as impressive and the pastor’s just and sympathetic words, personal of the deceased, were as generously bestowed as they were deserved. The theme of Rev. Klatt’s message was taken from Genesis 24:56, “Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered by way; send me away that I may go to my master, the hope of a Christian, and it was one of the great comforts to her loved ones.

The singing of several hymns by a quartette consisting of Mrs. W.H. Bahe, Mrs. Howard SIECKMANN, Mrs. Harry Sieckmann and Mrs. G. Klatt, with Mrs. Lawrence at the organ, was very impressive. The pallbearers were her six grandsons, W.H., Frank, John, Emil, Henry and Theodore Rippe. There were many beautiful floral offerings. She loved flowers and greatly appreciated things that were beautiful and good. The flowers were in charge of Lavern and Nora Schroeder.

The following sketch of her life is a touching tribute to the deceased: Catherine Roetter nee SCHROEDER was born April 9, 1836, near Wridel, Province of Hanover, Germany. Here she received the holy rite of baptism in infancy, was confirmed, and in February, 1861, she united in marriage with Henry Roetter.

Five children were born unto them, two of whom passed away in their youth, and a son, William, preceding her in death two years ago. Two children survive her, Mrs. Henry Rippe of this vicinity and Henry roetter of Farnam, NE. Her husband died about 34 years ago.

In the year of 1866 she and her husband left their native land for America, settling in Beecher, IL. In 1880 they bought a farm, located one mile north of the South Lutheran church. Here she spent the remainder of her years until the death of her son William. Since then she made her home with her daughter Mrs. Catherine Rippe.

She was born, baptized, reared, living and died in the Christian faith. She passed away after a few months illness at the home of her daughter March 12 at 9 o’clock p.m., death apparently being due to old age, following an attack of la grippe.

Mrs. Roetter was truly a mother in the church. She was one of the good of earth. Those who knew her well felt that she was a worthy woman. Her life was long and in it she did much that was good and holy. Almost four score years on earth is seldom given humans. This measure was granted her and she wasted none of it. She was devoted to her work and what her hands marvel, and wonder how she could do so much, especially in her late years. The center of her interest was in her home. She never wearied in telling the incidents of the childhood of her children, nor the many hardships she endured.

Zealous as she was in her work, devoted as she was to her family, she never faltered in serving her Master. Often when inclement weather prevailed she would take her shoes and stockings in her hand and walk to her church for worship. Counting the Sabbaths in which she was at her place of worship, she filled thirteen years to a devoted life.

In addition to the great host of friends she has made, she leaves to mourn her departure her daughter Mrs. Catherine Rippe, her son Henry of Farnam, nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and many other relatives. At the time of death she was 90 years, 11 months and 3 days of age. The funeral was well attended by the members of the church she had so faithfully served, and by her many friends and neighbors. The world is better for her having lived in it these four score years of
