Daniel BAILEY

Pioneer Passes Away – In the Death of Daniel BAILEY, of Channahon, Will County is the Loser This afternnon at 2 o’clock, Rev. A. H. LAING officiating, all that was mortal of Daniel BAILEY, one of the pioneer residents of Channahon, was consigned to mother earth. The death of this venerable and highly-respected man, which occurred Wednesday at midnight, cast a goom over the entire community. Heart and lung trouble was the cause. The deceased was aged 86 years. Mr. BAILEY was born May 24, 1813, in Pennsylvania. At the home of his father, on the Channahon road, near Rock Run, on Feb. 12, 1841, he was married to Miss Rebecca BOARDMAN, a half-sister of Adam COMSTOCK, the surveyer of this city, In 1842, Mr. BAILEY removed to Channahon, and settled on the place where he resided until his death. Mr. BAILEY was twice married. By his first wife, he had one child, Alexander, now living in Maryville, Mo. On July 14, 1848, Mr. Bailey was married to Mrs. BROWN, formerly Miss Susan ZARLEY, and they had two children, Calneh and Mrs. Ella KIEP, both of whom are still living in Channahon. Mr. BAILEY was a thrifty, industrious man, and when he died was on of the most substantial farmers in the county.

William BAILEY

Death of a Soldier. — Wm. BAILEY, a son of Jonathan BAILEY, of this city, and a member of the 100th Illinois regiment, died in this city, on the 4th inst., from disease contracted in camp. Leone BAIRD

Services were held Saturday morning for Leone Ruth Baird, 95 of Peotone. Mrs. Baird died Augsut 19, 2004 at Miller Health Care Center in Kankakee. She was born August 5, 1909 in Peotone. She was a homemaker and was a retired pharmacy apprentice at Hilsenhoff and Crooks Pharmacy in Peotone. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Peotone, past matron of the Eastern Star, Peotone Women’s Club and Peotone American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, singing and gardening. Mrs. Baird is survived by a daughter Vicki (Jim) Shinn of Peotone; 2 grandchildren, Bob (Laurie) Shinn of Peotone and Kathy Bottoms of Manteno; and 4 great grandchildren, Cody and Jacob Bottoms and Andrew and John Robinson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Baird, in 1989; they were married June 12, 1935 in Peotone; and infant twin daughters, Virginia and Jane in 1938; her parents, Victor and Sylvia Hinrich Beutien; and 2 sisters, Katherine Albers and Elizabeth Albers. The funeral was conducted August 21 at the First Presbyterian Church of Peotone. Pastor Jonathan Krogh officated. Burial was in Peotone Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Shinn, Don Zaffino, Bob Hespen, Rich Reichert, Bob Hilsenhoff and Dick Barten. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Peotone or Peotone Paramedics. Arrangements were under the direction of Fedde-Helfrich Chapel.

Mrs John BALTZ

Mrs. John BALTZ Dies at Home In Troy Township; Mrs. John Baltz, 50 years old, died this morning at her home in Troy township. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Harlow and Donald; two daughters, Catherine and Elsie Mae; two brothers, Robert and Joshua, and a sister, Mrs. Elsie M. PAGE. Funeral services will be from the home Wednesday morning at 9:15 o’clock and from St. John’s Catholic church at 10 o’clock. Burial will be in St. John’s cemetery.

MW BANNON

Died. — BANNON — At his residence on Bluff Street on Saturday morning, Feb. 7, 1880, of Asthma, M. W. BANNON in the 70th year of his age. Mr. Bannon was one of the oldest settlers of this city, Coming here from the county of Rosecommon, Ireland, in 1837. He leaves a wife and four children, two of the latter being Edward and Daniel. By steadiness and hard work he accumulated a good proporty here and was a man who was very much respected by his accquaintances. The faneral will be at St. Patrick’s Church this morning at 9 o’clock. Mrs Katherine BANSINA

BANSINA — Mrs. Katherine BANSINA, 37 years old, died in St. Joseph’s hospital last night at 8 o’clock. She is survived by her husband, Simon BANSINA, and five children. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock from the home, 907 North Bluff Street, to St. Mary’s Croation church. Burial in St. Mary’s Croation cemetery.

Samuel BARKER

The Cold. — Since this country has been settled by its present inhabitants, we have not had so long a spell of intense cold weather. Since the advent of the new year, the thermometer has ranged from 1 to 28 below Zero. Many persons have been frost bitten and frozen to death throughout the country, and the loss of stock, fowls, potatoes, apples and vegitables, of all kinds has been immense. Indeed few cellars were sufficiently warm to save anything from the freeze. Quail and will fowl have also been nearly annihilated by the cold. Frozen To Death. — Samuel BARKER, a tailor by trade, and said to be of most respectable connexions, a resident of this city for several years, was found frozen stiff in front of Mr. SANFORD’s store, on Chicago street, on Friday morning last. He lived alone, was of intemperate habits, and it is supposed fell down and perished when returning to his place on the evening named.

Elwood Emma BARNES died Saturday evening at 8 o’clock after a long and painful illness. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church of which she was a faithful and acceptable member, on Monday at 2 o’clock p.m.

Mary Jane BARNES

BARNES -Mrs. Mary Jane BARNES, aged 69 years of cancer of the stomach, Nov. 24, 1897, at 3am at her residence, four miles south of Joliet. The funeral took place from the house this morning at 10 o’clock. Interment at Zarley’s cemetery. Mrs. Barnes was one of the old settlers having lived in Will County over forty years. She was the relict of Mathew Barnes, who died in September, 1896. The two had then been married about forty-eight years. five children survive their mother. They are: Mrs. Harriet BAILEY and Eugene BARNES of Channahon township, Mrs. Ermina BUMP, of Homer township and Rachel and Isaac BARNES, who reside at the homestead.

Nathaniel BARNES

Nathaniel BARNES Dead. Aged and Well-Known Pioneer in this Community Passes Away> In the death of Nathaniel Barnes, Sr., which occurred last night at 9 o’clock, Joliet loses one of it’s oldest and best known residents. A man nearly 81 years of age, Mr. BARNES has spent over forty years of that time a thrifty citizen of Joliet. The BARNES homestead on South Chicago street is one of the hospitable landmarks of this community. Here Mr. and Mrs. BARNES have lived together over two score of years, rearing a large family, and winning constant additions to their large circle of friends. Mr. BARNES has been in feeble condition for several months. The general debility that comes with extreme old age was responsible for his demise. He was a native of New York state, having been born in Haverstraw, Rockland County, June 18, 1818. October 4, 1849, he married Mary Elizabeth DE THEILL, the widow who survives him. They came to their present homestead in May, 1858, and have lived there ever since. Mr. BARNES was the father of ten children, six of whom survive him. They are: Julian, Mrs. Rosalia SCHNEIDER, Nathaniel, Jr., Mrs. C.O.BOND, John H., and Mrs. John THORNTON, of Trenton, New Jersey. Emily, Isaac and Edward died in infancy and Mrs. O.J. GILKERSON, a daughter, died at Coronado Beach, Cal., Feb. 17, 1899. One surviving brother, Belding BARNES, lives in Haverstraw, New York. Most of the family were present at the bedside of the dying man last night. Included in the group was Mr. GILKERSON, the son-in-law, and his three girls. The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., from the home to Oakwood. Rev. LEWIS officiating.

Robert BARNES

Robert BARNES, a highly respected young farmer of Jackson township died after a short illness at the residence of his father, Matthew BARNES, Friday, March 10th, 1882. For a number of weeks he had been suffering with a severe felon and though he had not recovered from the same was busying himself at work as usual but a few days previous to his demise, and in doing so contracted a severe cold. Having occasion to visit his father’s place during the early part of last week, he was there prostrated and unable to be removed and within four days thereafter breathed his last. Deceased was 34 years old and leaves a wife and three chldren. The funeral occurred Sunday, the remains being deposited in the Des Plaines Cemetery.

George BARR

Visitation for George W. Barr, 85, of Wilton Center, will be from 3-8 p.m. today at the Forsythe Funeral Home in Manhattan, and from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until the 10 a.m. services at the Wilton Federated Church in Wilton Center. Rev. Richard Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wilton Federated Church or to the Manhattan paramedics. He died Friday, July 11, 2003, at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet. Mr. Barr retired from Commonwealth Edison after 39 years of service. He served as president of the Peotone School Board and was a Wilton Township Trustee for several terms. He was born June 10, 1918 the son of Charles and Isabel Mackender Barr. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Mary Cann; 1 daughter, Barbara Palmer of Wilton Center; 1 son and daughter-in-law, George Jr. and Susan Barr of Spring Green, Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; special nephew, Dale Drew; and special caretaker, Ivan Atanassov. One sister, Vera Drew; one brother, Howard Barr; and 1 great-granddaughter, Kaylee Anderson, are deceased. He was a lifelong resident of Wilton Township and a graduate of Joliet Township High School. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. Mr. Barr served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Manhattan American Legion Post 935. He served as chairman and treasurer of the Wilton Federated Church executive board, and was a member of the Wilton Cemetery Board of Trustees.

Kevin B BARR

Kevin B. BARR, 20 of Wilton Township, died Wednesday, Sep. 21, 1977, in the University of Chicago Billings Hospital. he had been ill with cancer for almost a year. He was born 25 Jul 1957, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Burton BARR. He attended Peotone schools and was graduated from Peotone High School in 1975. While in high school he was active in the Future Farmers of American and following his graduation he was awarded the State Farmer Degree. He was also a graduate of the Willing Wilton Workers 4-H Club. Kevin attended Joliet Junior College and received his associate degree in Agriculture in May and was an employee of the Hubert Grain Company of Wilmington. Kevin was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Manhattan where services were held Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Eugene KALKBRENNER pastor of the church, and the Rev. Norman SMITH, pastor of the Wilton Center Federated Church, officated at the services. Mrs. Ervin Werner was the organist. Kevin is survived by his parents, two sisters, Linda nd Lori, maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs. J. William TUCKER of Peotone; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard BARR of rural Manhattan, several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Serving as pallbearers were Gregory OLIVER, Patrick OLIVER, Terry YUNKER, Thomas GINTER, Kenneth WANDLESS and David OSBORNE. Interment was in Wilton Center Cemetery. Memorials in Kevin’s name were given to the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center.

Funeral services for Miss Florence Wilhelmina BARTEN,50, who died Friday at Silver Cross hospital, will be Monday afternoon at Manhattan. The funeral procession is to leave the Klemm Funeral home there at 1:30 o’clock and will proceed to St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed church for a serviced at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Manhattan Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 o’clock Sunday. Miss BARTEN was a domestic and worked in a home in Frankfort for many years. She had been ill for 10 days. Miss BARTEN was a daughter of Mrs. Sophia and the late Fred BARTEN. She was born in Manhattan township and lived in that area through her lifetime. Her father died in 1952. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Sophia BARTEN of Manhattan; six sisters, Miss Ruth and Miss Shirley Barten; Lillian now Mrs. Leroy SEGGEBRUCH, Loretta now Mrs. Milton CURRAN;; Marie now Mrs. Wilbur BROOKMAN, all of Manhattan; and Velma now Mrs. Edmund EBERT of Frankfort; five brothers, Lester of Elwood; Harold, Vernon, Virgil and Orville of Manhattan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold A BARTEN

The funeral for Harold A. BARTEN, 58, life-long resident of Manhattan Township, was held here on Wednesday. he passed away at Silver Cross Hospital, Feb. 4, after a short illness. He was born in rural Manhattan, his parents being the late Fred and Sophia HEISNER BARTEN. After his marriage to Fern RUETZ, they farmed until 1968 when they moved into Manhattan where they have lived at 265 May Street. He was employed by the State Highway Department and later, was in construction work. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Florence BARTEN. Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Cheryl) CHRISMAN, Mrs. Edward (Sandra) DOUGLAS, Mrs. Dan (Donna) GEISS, and Mrs. David (Debra) UPTON; and a son, Richard, all of Manhattan; three grandsons, Jeffrey Adam GEISS, and Richard and Randy CHRISMAN, six sisters, Miss Ruth BARTEN, Mrs. LeRoy (Lillian) SEGEBRUCH, Mrs. Raymond (Loretta) SEGGEBRUCH, Mrs. Wilbur (Marie) BROOKMAN, all of Manhattan, Mrs. Edmund (Velma) EBERT of Frankfort, Mrs. John (Shirley) KUEBEL of Monee; four brothers, Lester of Elwood, Vernon, Virgil and Orville, all of Manhattan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ina BARTEN

Visitation for Ina G. Giles Barten, 89, of Wilton Center in Will County for her whole life, will be 3-8 p.m. today at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel, Peotone, and from 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Wilton Center Federated Church until the 10:30 a.m. services. Rev. Richard Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in Wilton Center Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wilton Center Federated Church, where she was a member. She died Thursday, October 21, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Barten worked for the Rock-n-Roll Pizza Company, Bensenville Nursing Home of Peotone and The Anchorage of Beecher. She volunteered at the Salem Home in Joliet. She was born August 13, 1915, in Wilton Township, the daughter of Wallace and Ethel Broadrick Giles. Her husband, Robert W. Barten, whom she married February 6, 1937, in Manteno, died in 1990. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth J. and Charles Schuler of Wilton Center; one grandson, Robert C. (Connie Rose) of Elwood; two granddaughters, Connie Beth Pope of Wilton Center, Cathy Lynn (David) Fausett of Rockford; six great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; one niece; one nephew; one grand-niece and one grand-nephew. Three brothers, Lloyd (Marge) Giles, Orville (Marion) Giles, Chester (Anna)Giles; one sister, Bernice (Milton) Robinson; and one nephew, Duane Giles, are deceased. Mrs. Barten served as assistant organist at the Wilton Center Federated Church where she started the Junior Choir and helped start the Bible School, both of which continue today.

Mildred Doris BARTEN

Mildred Doris BARTEN(nee PASTORE) Of Manhattan passed away peacefully on December 20, 2003 at Loyola Medical Center. Born December 25, 1926 to John and Loretta (HALPIN)PASTORE of Coal City, Illinois. She was married to Orville (Pete) Barten on November 15, 1952. A lifelong resident of Manhattan, serving her community as Village Clerk for 18 years, retiring in 1989. Millie was a member of St. Joseph Church in Manhattan and enjoyed the gatherings of family and friends. She was a devoted mother and spent her retirement years in the company of her four grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Patty Proper of Wilmington and Pam (Duke) Kraai of Manhattan; a son, Paul “P.J.” Barten of Jersyville, IL; special friends, Patty Hardwick and children; grandchildren, Tony, Adam and Theresa Proper and Katie Kraai; and a sister, Loretta Funk of Coal City. Preceded in death by her dear husband, Pete in 1994; and an infant granddaughter, Leah Proper in 1981. Funeral services were held on Monday for Ruth S. BARTEN, 78, of Manhattan who died Aug. 21, 1987, at Saint Joseph Medical Center. She was a lifetime resident of the Manhattan area. Survivors include five sisters, Lillian (Leroy) SEGGEBRUCH, Loretta (Raymond) SEGGEBRUCH, Marie (Wilbur) BROOKMAN, Shirley KUEBEL, all of Manhattan and Velma (Edmund) EBERT of Frankfort; two brothers, Virgil (Angela) BARTEN and Orville (Mildred) BARTEN, of Manhattan; two sisters-in-law, Aadra GILL and Fern BARTEN, also of Manhattan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Interment was at Manhattan Center Cemetery. Pall bearers were her nephews. A luncheon was served for the family and friends by the ladies of St. Pau’s United Church of Christ. Mrs. Sophie BARTEN, 79, of Manhattan township, died Thursday at Silver Cross hospital following a lingering illness. Mrs. BARTEN was born in Manhattan township and lived there all her life. She was a member of the Women’s Guild of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. Her husband, Fred, preceded her in death in 1952 and a daughter, Florence in 1956. Joliet Signal April 10, 1883 front page: At an early hour last Wednesday morning Joseph BARTHELME age 54 years, a well known resident of the west side, breathed his last after a short, but severe illness. For the past 32 years the deceased has lived in the city, an honored and highly respected citizen, and one who was favored with the good will of all that knew him. In years past he served the city in several official capacities, having at one time been a useful member of the city council and lately proved a efficient assessor of the town and city property. A wife and ten children are left to mourn his untimely decease, and his memory will long be kept green in the hearts of numerous friends and relatives. He was born 21 Feb 1906, in Monee, to John and Amalia SMIT BAUER. He was a farmer. He was a member of St Joh’s United Church of Christ, Peotone, and Eastern Will County Senior Services. Mr BAUER is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Maynard) LOY of Monee; two grandchildren, Annette (Jeff) CLARK of New Lenox, and Jason LOY of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Allison CLARK; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen, in 1974; a brother, Walter; and two sisters, Lydia and Emma. The funeral was held 1 March at St John’s United Church of Christ. Carl O. BAUMGARTNER, former Joliet dairyman, succumbed to a short illness yesterday at Silver Cross hospital. He was 50 years old. Mr. BAUMGARTNER, a resident of Joliet for 35 years, resided at 301 Richards Street. Mrs. BAUMGARTNER died two years ago. Born in Frankfort, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank BAUMGARTNER, he was raised in Peotone. Coming to Joliet he opened the BAUMGARTNER Dairy company with his brother, the late Harry BAUMGARTNER and his father. The business grew to be one of the largest in the city. It was sold to the Gilkerson company 12 years ago. Mr. BAUMGARTNER was a member of the Mt. Joliet Masonic lodge and the local camp of the Modern Woodmen of America. Surviving are a son, Frank; a daughter, Mary Lou, and the father, Frank BAUMGARTNER, Cherry Hill road. Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Sonntag funeral home, the Rev. Charles BECK

Chuck’s courageous battle with lymphoma ended on Oct. 5, 2003, when he went home to be with his precious Lord and Savior. Chuck was born Febrary 22, 1941, in Homewood. He resided in Peotone, with his wife, Joy Lynn and children most of his adult life until her passing in 1987. In 1989 he married wife Kaye and remained in Peotone until November of 1996. He and Kaye then moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, after he retired from teaching junior high students math and science for 30 years. He loved working with children, which continued after his move to Bonners Ferry. Chuck was instrumental in starting the first elementary mentoring program for Boundary County schools and loved working with all of the volunteer mentors, children and teachers. Chuck loved to be with people and frequently shared his sense of humor, kindness and friendship with everyone he met. His passion for Jesus was apparent to all who knew him. This past year he enjoyed and cherished his opportunity to be the facilitator of the building project for Bonners Ferry Church of the Nazarene. The miracles that he shared as the Lord built the church left a tremendous witness of the power of an almighty God which Chuck absolutely cherished. Chuck is survived by his wife Kaye of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; daughter Sherri of St. Louis, Missouri.; son Kevin and his wife, Amy, granddaughters, Haylee and Jaclyn of Manteno; son Brian and his wife Nancy, grandsons Tom and Matt of Plainfield; brother Rich and his wife Sherry of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Chuck and Evelyn Beck, sister Deanna and his first wife, Joy Lynn. His loss leaves a tremendous void in the lives of all who loved him and a legacy of a man totally devoted to the Lord. A memorial service was held at the Bonners Ferry Church of the Nazarene and will also be held at 11 a.m. October 11 at the Manteno Church of the Nazarene. Greg G. BECKER, 38, of Manhattan died Jan. 31, 1995 at Rush Presbyterian St. luke Medical Center, Chicago, from complications after receiving a liver transplant three weeks ago. He was employed at Shell Oil in the maintenance department. He was a devoted husband and father, who coached children in the Manhattan Baseball Association. he was also an active member of the Manhattan Athletic Booster Club. Norbert BEHRENS

Services will be held Friday morning, April 13, for Norbert A BEHRENS, 86, of Peotone. Mr BEHRENS died 10 Apr 2001, at Miller Healthcare Center in Kankakee. Mr BEHRENS passed away just eight days short of his 87th birthday, and six days short of the 57th wedding anniversery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9pm Thursday, April 12, at Fedde- Helfrich Chapel in Peotone. The funeral will begin at 11am Friday at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Peotone, where he was a member. The Rev David MCDONALD will officiate. Burial will be in Peotone Cemetery. He was born 18 April 1914, in Green Garden Township. He grew up on a farm and later became head forman for Thompson Farms in Monee. He had also worked as a carpenter at the Steger Cabinet Factory and maintained his love of woodworking well into his retirement years, making anything from cabinets and furniture to novelty items, and music stands for the Immanuel Church’s Bell Choir. Mr BEHRENS had also worked for Meyer Brothers and Son in Peotone for about 10 years before moving across the street to the Ford garage. He and his cousin Rreuben, bought the franchise, and operated SCHMIDT-BEHRENS Ford from 1966 to 1976. He then worked as head of shop for Vic KATIS Ford until he retired. In his retirement years, he managed and did his own repairs on the BEHRENS apartment buildings. He was also active in his church; he played dartball, was on the church board a number of times, and volunteered to repair whatever needed fixing at the church. He was a member of Kankakee Moose. Mr BEHRENS is survived by his wife, Irene HEISNER BEHRENS, whom he married on 16 April 1945, in Peotone; a son, Kenneth (Cindi) BEHRENS of BLoomington; two grandchildren, Kate and Kim BEHRENS; a sister, Leora CROSS of Aurora; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Frieda MUELLER BEHRENS. Norbert will be remembered for his hard work, honesty and kindness.

Mr BEHRENS died 13 Aug 1998 at The Anchorage of Beecher. He was born 19 June 1903 in Monee, the son of Fred and Christina BEHRENS. His wife, the former Alice SMITH, whom he married 25 Oct 1925, died in 1984. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond F and Gladys BEHRENS of Beecher; four grandchildren, Linda (Jerry) JOHNSON of South Carolina, Nancy (Chip) KREGEL, Douglas (Peggy) BEHRENS and Marshall BEHRENS, all of Beecher; and five great-grandchildren. One daughter-in-law, Dorothy, and three sisters are deceased. Mr BEHRENS was a retired farmer since 1952. He also was employed at Wehmohofer Hardware Store and the Beecher School District as a bus driver for many years. He was a Die Hard Club Fan all his life.

Evelyn Berry, 91, Peotone, died Sunday, July 11, 2004 at Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet. She was born December 21, 1912 in New Lenox, the daughter of Gerhard and Matilda (nee Jarchow) Hossbach. Mrs. Berry was a bookkeeper, Peotone Village Clerk from 1961-1975 and former co-owner and co-operator of Gem Cafe. She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Peotone. She was a Metropolitan Business College graduate in 1930, a member of the Eastern Will County Senior Services and loved to play cards and enjoyed traveling. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Vernon ENGELHARDT, Peotone, and nephew, Jerry (Anne) Engelhardt of Yorkville. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Lester MUNDT (1941), second husband, George Berry (1969) and sister Elvira Engelhardt (2001). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 from 3-9 pm at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 15th at 11 am at the funeral home. Rev. Clarence Bangs will officiate. Interment will be in Immanuel United Church of Christ. Pallbearers are Matt Engelhardt, Luke Engelhardt, Mitch Hattan, Dave Powell, Larry Christiansen and Andrew Janczylik.

Services were held Sunday afternoon for Alice B BETTENHAUSEN (nee KOPMAN) of Beecher, formerly of South Chicago Heights. Mrs BETTENHAUSEN died 28 Nov 1996 at The Anchorage of Beecher. She was born 26 Jan 1909, in Monee. She was a homemaker, a member of the St Luke’s Women’s Guild, and a former member of St John’s United Church of Christ in Chicago Heights. Mrs BETTENHAUSEN is survived by a daughter, Gladys (Eldon) HUENERBERG of Beecher; and a sister, Viola KANNBERG of Crete. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, in 1957; a sister and a brother. The funeral was held Dec 1 at St Luke United Church of Christ. The Rev Timothy RHODES officiated. Burial was in St Paul’s United Church of Christ cemetery in Monee. Memorials can be made to the St Luke Memorial Fund. Arrangements were handled by the Hack Funeral Home in Beecher.

Conrad BETTENHAUSEN Passes Away Green Garden For Years Known as Model Citizen Especially as a Church Worker in This Community What had been so sorrowfully anticipated by the many friends and relatives who frequented his bedside, occurred Saturday evening, November 17 at 6:30 o’clock when the sad news was spread announcing the death of Conrad C. BETTENHAUSEN, a well known citizen of Frankfort Station. Notwithstanding the fact that all the assistance that human hands could lend were tendered him, it could be seen that slowly but surely he was losing ground in that great struggle against the “last enemy of man.” Already the dawn of his last days’ struggle on the battlefield of life gave ample signs of its fast approaching end, yet he lingered throughout that mournful day till when once more darkness spreading her peaceful mantle over nature, announced the end of another day’s toil, he too, had finished his and passed away, yet not into darkness but eternal day, a triumphant child of God. Hardly had September bid the summer adieu and ushered in the fall when Mr. Bettenhausen was suddenly overtaken by paralysis of one entire side of his body, which resulting in the loss of use of his vocal organs, rendered him a helpless creature throughout four weeks, the last and longest of his life. The funeral services were h [eld? – section missing] Tuesday, Nov. 19, beginning a [t? – section missing] o’clock at the home of the deceased, conducted by his pastor, Rev. F.F. KLENSKY from whence the remains were taken to the English M. E. Church where Rev. James R. VANDERVOORT, pastor of the Methodist church of Frankfort and an intimate friend as well as frequent visitor of Mr. BETTENHAUSEN during his last illness, spoke the words of consolation, taken from (Cor. 15, 41,) “There is one glory of the moon and another glory of the stars, for one star differeth from another star in glory.” Following this Rev. KLENSKY read the obituary closing with numerous amiable tributes to the deceased in connection with the words of Job, “I know that my redeemer liveth.” When the final opportunity was given to view the remains, friends from far and near came to pay tribute to a beloved character, once hidden in that form, now only but a mass of lifeless clay. Burial was at Pleasant Hill cemetery at Frankfort, where his remains shall rest until that great and glorious day. Conrad BETTENHAUSEN was born June 14, 1834, at Koenigswald, Kreis Rotenburg, Kurhessen, Germany. When but a child, having lost both his parents, he made his home with Rev. HESS in his native town, where he received his early christian training. At the age of 19, he emigrated to America, coming directly to Orland, Cook county, Ill., where on Sept. 9, 1857, he was married to Miss Elizabeth HORN and settled on a farm. Five sons and five daughters were born to them. Some 45 years ago he was united with the German M. E. Church, remaining a faithful member of the same to his end, also holding the offices of steward, Sunday school superintendent and trustee while he fulfilled the duties such positions laid upon him most conscientiously. He loved the church of his choice and was ever ready to lend a helping hand in the promotion of its cause, his pastors always finding in him a wise counsellor. Mr. BETTENHAUSEN never failed to impress upon his children the necessity of living a christian life. As mere babes he would gather them around the family altar, there teaching them the beautiful lessons of Christianity. Above all other things enjoyable to Mr. BETTENHAUSEN upon Earth was his great love for music. Mr. Bettenhausen was oftimes wont to say how his whole life was a song. All day long as he went about his work fulfilling life” duties and carrying life” burdens, his clear tenor voice could be heard even at a distance with such firmness and joy that it convinced every hearer that these songs were making lighter the burdens of him who sung. In 1884 he moved to a farm in Green Garden, from whence in 1892, he retired to Frankfort where he resided to the end. Not quite three months ago Mr. and Mrs. Bettenhausen enjoyed the rare privilege of celebrating their golden wedding at which time dear friends and relatives wished them at least some few years more of happy unity upon earth. But the Divine will had destined it otherwise. Instead he lies in peaceful repose awaiting the final reunion of his loved ones and enjoying in reality that which permeated his very soul when he sang, “When All my Labors and Trials Are O’er,” the famous Torrey hymn. Those still here to mourn his loss are, a loving wife whose name was to him almost sacred, whose presence he continually sought, yes whose foot steps as he heard them come, brought to him a smile even in his pain; two sons, three daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, one great grandchild, besides a host of intimate friends and relatives. Mrs. Bettenhausen and children wish through the columns of the News to express their sentiments of sincere gratitude to all who lent their aid and sympathy in the bereavement caused by the death of their beloved husband and father.

Conrad F BETTENHAUSEN

Mokena, Will County, Illinois, News- Bulletin, 22 Sep 1947, Conrad F. BETTENHAUSEN, 73, who died last Saturday night, August 16, at 11 o’clock in St. Francis hospital, Blue Island, was buried in Tinley Park Memorial cemetery, Tuesday afternoon following a 2 o’clock funeral service in Hirsch’s funeral chapel, Tinley Park with the Rev. Albert BUDDENHAGEN pastor of Tinley Park Zion Lutheran church officiating. Active throughout his life until about a year ago, when his health began to fail, Mr. BETTENHAUSEN was seized with a fainting spell on Thursday, August 7, and was taken to the hospital in Blue Island. His condition was recognized as serious, and he was unable to regain the strength that had carried him through many years. Mr. BETTENHAUSEN was born in 1869 in Koenigswald in Germany. In 1894 he married Margaret ANDRES and in the same year came to the United States to carve out his future. Shortly after arriving in Tinley Park, he settled in Frankfort township, about half way between Tinley Park and Mokena. Here five sons were born, of whom four survive. Here, too, his wife died in 1921. In 1925 he was again married, to Miss Anna ACKERMAN, also of Koenigswald, Germany. She survives. In the 1920s Mr. BETTENHAUSEN shifted responsibility for the large farm to his son John, but continued to be active in assisting up until his health failed last year. In the same year, 1924, he participated in organizing a building corporation with his sons, Henry, Emil and August, and with Justice SHAFFER. Disbanded 10 years later, the business was converted into the business now operated by Henry BETTENHAUSEN known as the Bettenhausen Hardware store in Tinley Park. From that time on he rendered assistance on the farm and in the store, maintaining the activity which had characterized his life. Survivors in addition to the widow are Henry BETTENHAUSEN, Emil BETTENHAUSEN, Tinley Park, John BETTENHASUEN, on the farm, and August BETTENHAUSEN, employed by International Harvester company, Chicago, sons, and by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Married Marie WRIGHT of Matteson, IL on December 15, 1937 who preceded him in death in 1983. He was a member of Green Garden United Methodist Church, the Will County Farm Bureau, Active in several card playing groups, church Ice Cream Socials and enjoyed showing 16 mm movies at Ice Cream Socials and family gatherings. Survived by a daughter, Marie WRIGHT of Matteson, IL. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wesley and William C. BETTENHAUSEN; and a sister, Edna WEBER. Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 7, 2001 at 11:00 AM in the Green Garden United Methodist Church with Pastor Penny HOFFMAN officiating. Mokena News-Bulletin,Edwin BETTENHAUSEN, 54, of 1214 Oneida street, Joliet, former operator of a general store at Andres and one time superintendent of the Green Garden Methodist church school for 25 years, died Thursday, August 28, at Silver Cross hospital following a lingering illness. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John BETTENHAUSEN, he was born in Green Garden township where he spent his youth. Later he moved to Andres and established a general store there. He operated the general store for 23 years until ill health forced him to retire about three years ago at which time he moved to Joliet to make his home. Acitive in affairs of the Green Garden church, her served as head of the church shool there for a quarter of a century. He also held other offices in the church. Mr. BETTENHAUSEN was active in the Masonic lodge also. Surviving are his wife, the former Marie HEISNER; two daughters, Lois of Joliet and Mrs. Wendell MORRISON of Andrew; one granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. Emma WOODMAN of Joliet and Mrs Alma BAUCH of Frankfort; two brothers, Henry of Albion, Mich.; and Alvin of Chicago. Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon at Wunderlich Funeral home to the Richards Street Methodist church at 1:30PM Burial was in Greenview cemetery Green Garden.

Gladys I. BETTENHAUSEN Businesswoman: Gladys I. BETTENHAUSEN nee CAPPEL, 93, of Orland Park, died Friday at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tinley Park United Methodist Church, 6875 173rd Place. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery in Mokena. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Colonial Chapel, 15525 S. 73rd Ave., Orland Park. Mrs. BETTENHAUSEN was born Jan. 16, 1909 in Mokena. With her late husband, Herbert, she helped found Bettenhausen Motor Sales and ran the company with him until 1983. She was a member of Tinley Park United Methodist Women and Senior Citizens clubs, and was a homemaker. Mrs. BETTENHAUSEN is survived by three daughters Phyllis EBELING of Tinley Park, Gloria LITTLE of Orland Park, Donna CARLTON of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Harlan BETTENHAUSEN of Tinley Park; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Martha Elizabeth Horn BETTENHOUSE

Frankfort Pioneer Resident Passes Away A large number of friends and relatives gathered at the home of one of Will county’s pioneers, on Saturday afternoon, June 2, to pay their final tributes to the widowed wife of Conrad C. BETTENHAUSEN of Frankfort, who preceded her to his reward, not quite two years ago. Although her end was not entirely unexpected by those who were daily at her bedside, the sudden change of her condition for the worse, which very soon resulted in her death, was a severe shock to her friends and relatives. She was taken ill April 30. Martha Elizabeth HORN was born on the 24th day of October, 1839, in Koenigswald Kreis Rotenburg, in the province of Kurhessen, Germany, from whence, she at the age of 17 years emigrated to America, arriving at Orland, Cook county, Ill., in the company of a party of friends and home-seekers. On Sept. 9, 1857, she was married to Mr. BETTENHAUSEN, and together they began life’s journey, settling on a farm. Difficult and many were the hardships confronting them in those early days of western country life, yet they were happy ones. The happy couple chanced to spend their first years on a region traversed by the early missionaries and becoming converts of the Methodists, they joined the German branch, of which both remained true members until the end. Ten children were born to them, five of whom now remain to mourn the loss of father and mother. They are John M., resident on a farm at Green Garden; Christ C., of Tinley Park; Mary, wife of Henry DEIST; Martha, wife of Frank FOLKERS, and Emma, wife of Frank KOHLHAGEN, of Frankfort.

Myrtle Bettenhausen — Manhattan Visitation for Myrtle Lillian Bettenhausen, 88, of rural Manhattan, will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. services at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel, Peotone. Pastor Penny Hoffman will officiate. Interment will be in Green Garden Greenview Cemetery, Manhattan. Pallbearers will be Lyle Emery, John Edward and Brian David Bettenhausen, Barry Keith and Kevin James Slifer and Rob David Bond. Memorials may be made to Green Garden United Methodist Church, where she was a member. She died Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at St. John’s Hospice, Springfield. She was born January 17, 1918, in Manhattan, the daughter of Charles and Amanda Polsen Johnson. Her husband, Emery J. Bettenhausen, whom she married April 20, 1938, in Manhattan, died in 1992. She was a member of The Jolly Nine and enjoyed cooking and sewing. Surviving are one son, Lyle Bettenhausen of Florida; one daughter, Beverly Slifer of Springfield; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Deceased are two sisters, Adeline Johnson and Florence Ekholm; and two brothers, Raymond and Clarence Johnson.

She was born January 17, 1918 in Manhattan, IL, the daughter of Charles and Amanda (nee POLSEN) JOHNSON. Myrtle was a Homemaker. She married Emery J. BETTENHAUSEN on April 20, 1938 in Manhattan. He preceded her in death in 1992. Survivors include a son, Lyle BETTENHAUSEN of Florida; a daughter, Beverly SLIFER of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Lyle BETTENHAUSEN Jr, John BETTENHAUSEN, Brian BETTENHAUSEN, Karen BETTENHAUSEN, Barry SLIFER, Kevin SLIFER and Ann BOND; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Adeline JOHNSON and Florence EKHOLM; and two brothers, Raymond and Clarence JOHNSON. Evelyn Arline (mike) BEUTIEN

Evelyn (Mike) Beutien, 80 of Manteno, died Friday, March 24, 2000 at her home. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Manteno where services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday. The Rev. David McDonald will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Manteno. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials in Mike’s name on behalf of the Immanuel United Church of Christ where she was a member, the Manteno Paramedics or the Kankakee Humane Society. She was born March 9, 1920 in Peotone to Fred and Julia (Deininger) Reitz. She married Eldon (Pug) Beutien who is deceased. Surviving are 1 daughter, Sue (Gary) Hoskins of Manteno, 2 grandsons, Ryan and Jamie Hoskins, 1 great grandson, Jacob Stauffenberg, 1 sister Helen Lalumendre, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, her son Dennis, her parents and 1 sister, June Rokus. Mrs. Beutien retired after 25 years at Manteno Mental Health Center and then worked for 13 years with her daughter in pet grooming. She was a Charter Member of the Manteno Sportsman’s Club Auxilliary where she was active until her death. She enjoyed playing bingo, euchre, crocheting, animals and spending time with family and friends.

William BEUTIEN

Visitation for William Clare (Bill) Beutien, 85, of Manteno, will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service at the Brown Funeral Home, Manteno, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ, Peotone, where he was a member, or to cystic fibrosis. He died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at his home. Mr. Beutien retired from Manteno State Hospital where he had worked in the power house. He was born February 21, 1917, in Peotone, the son of Edward C. and Sophia M. Meyer Beutien. Surviving are his wife, the former Frances I. Wulff, whom he married March 20, 1948, in Kankakee, of Manteno; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Pat Beutien of Carmel, Indiana, William and Cindy Beutien of Manteno, Brian and Jean Beutien of Kankakee; one daughter and son-in-law, Karla Rae and Terry Stark of Manteno; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Eunice Stebbins and Orel Lamore Lehnig; and two brothers, Ellsworth (Babe) Beutien and Eldon (Pug) Beutien, are deceased. Mr. Beutien had been a village trustee in the 60s. He was a member of the Peotone Masonic Lodge and the Manteno Sportsman’s Club. He had been a coach and umpired Little League. He played baseball through his early 40’s.
