Margaret D’ARCY

Died, in this city, on the 5th inst., Margaret D’ARCY, wife of John D’ARCY, aged 41 years. More than a passing notice is called for on the occasion of the decease of so worthy a person as Mrs. D’Arcy. Eleven years ago, with her husband, she made her home in this city, and resided here ever since. She was indeed a true woman in every sense of the word — affectionate and devout as a wife, kind and faithful as a mother, generous and confiding as a friend. As a christian her virtues shown with more than ordinary brilliancy. On no occasion was she ever known to neglect her christian duties. And she died the death of a true christian. She leaves a husband and six children and numerous acquaintances to mourn her death. The vast procession that followed her mortal remains to their last resting place was an evidence of the high estimation in which she was held in this community. The funeral services were most solemn. The remains were first removed to St. Patrick’s Church, where High Mass was said and most solemn funeral anthems sung, and thence conveyed to the cemetery and deposited in the grave amidst the regrets and tears of friends and relatives. Truly a good woman had gone to her rest. The grief stricken husband and other relatives have the sympathies of our citizens in their berevement.

Ellen DEMPSEY

In Troy, Ill., on the 9th inst., Ellen, wife of John DEMPSEY, Sen. The deceased was a lady esteemed by all who knew her. Winning all hearts to her by her gentleness of manner, her amiability of disposition and her many Christian virtues. After undergoing a brief but painful illness she at length, at the call of her Redeemer, resigned her spirit to him that gave it. It is hard indeed to resign to the cold clay the wife and mother, but oh, while we weep over her grave let us also think how beautiful it is to see the gentle and good go to their Father who waits them in Heaven. May the bereaved husband together with the motherless children be comforted by the beautiful thought that though divided in body, they are still united in spirit — and the angel mother and wife still guards their pathway to her pathway to her home in Heaven.

Gone forever the mother — the wife, But not to the cold damp clay; She sweetly sleeps in the arms of Him Who hath given and taken away. Gone forever from this cold bleak earth, Free from its toils and strife; Gone to the land which gave her birth, She’s crowned with immortal life.

Jig DONAVAN

Fatal Shooting Scrape. — The notorious “Jig” DONAVAN, who had infested this locality until he had become somewhat a terror to law abiding, peaceably inclined citizens, met his fate and was quietly put out of the way of doing more harm, last Thursday morning. In his regular line of business he had “held up” a man named Joseph CANE, the evening previous, in which official act he secured a twenty dollar swag. With this he proceeded to celebrate, and daylight Thursday morning found him on North Collins street in the mill district, still on the rampage, and ready for any bit of excitement that might turn up. It seems that brolls and scuffles had been the order of the night, in which a boon companion named “Pack” WHALEN figured conspicuously as well, and who, before parting company succeeded in getting Donavan’s revolver from that worthy. Although an armistice had been declared, about five or six o’clock in the morning the twain again met and bad blood was once more exhibited. As related by his friends Whalen endeavored to keep away from his aggressor, but without avail. A hand to hand scuffle ensued resulting in Donavan’s being shot by a revolver in the hands of Whalen. The wounded man staggered some distance and fell, and upon being examined by a physician the wound was pronounced mortal. The ball which was of large calibre had penetrated the abdomen and lodged in the back. Whalen made a hasty escape taking to the timber and afterwards bringing up in Lockport. He was there captured while purchasing some cartridges for his revolver, and now is in the safe keeping of Sheriff PREPENBRINK. Donavan lingered until Saturday, when he breathed his last.

Alonso S DYKEMAN

One Soldier Shot By Another. — On Saturday evening last, there was a shooting affair in Mr. ROGAN’s saloon, in this city. An inquest was held by Coroner DALY, and it appeared from the evidence before the jury that there had been a quarrel between a Scotsman named BARTON, and two soldiers belonging to Capt. BARNETT’s battery, named John RILEY and Alonso S. DYKEMAN, which terminated in blows, when Riley drew a revolver which in the scuffle that ensued was accidentally discharged, the ball passing Thro’ the body of his comrade, Dykeman, killing him instantly. The parties were under the influence of liquor at the time. Riley was arrested by the Provost Marshall and Barton by the civil authorities, but, we learn, were subsequently discharged. This is another sad warning against the practice of carrying side arms.
