Chester Keith GILBERT

Elwood, Ill., Aug 26-The funeral services over Chester Keith GILBERT, who died after a short illness were held in the Presbyterial church, Rev. GESSELBRACHT preaching a most appropriate sermon. Burial was in the Brown church cemetery. He lived his short life in attending Sunday school. Chester was a sweet livable (sic) child. His teachers, friends and family all loved him and are bowed with grief that he was so early called from them. In his home he was quiet and cheerful. Christ loved him and took him to Himself because his work here was furnished (sic), because there were greater heights and easier paths for his feet. So sudden! we say. But, oh! the pain and suffering he is saved. It is all joy, all love, all music for him. He loved the beautiful here, he has none but the beautiful there. Dr. and Mrs. GILBERT express their profoundest appreciation and sincerest gratitude for the many tokens of kindly interest and tender affection at this moment of bereavement. The noral (sic) offerings and tributes were so many and beautiful, the kindly offer of assistance in every part of the home life and the spontaneous out pouring of heart felt sympathy on all realised profoundly but seem beyond the power of words to express. The neighbors and friends will please accept this public verbal expression of indebtedness as a slight acknowledgement of the large debt of thanks and obligation which is too great to repay.

He had been missing from his place of boarding since the Friday previous. The deceased was a kind-hearted industrious man, and might have lived respected and happy, had it not been for his unfortunate intemperant habits. (Well, respected anyway. — L. B. Peet)

Mary Ann GONTER

The following clipping from the Madison (Kansas) News will be of interest to many people of Jackson and also of Joliet, Mr. GONTER at one time running the candy store and restaurant now operated by SCHEIDT of Jefferson street, Joliet: Mary Ann GONTER died at her home in Madison on Tuesday afternoon December 29, 1896, aged 66 years, 10 months and 21 days after an illness extending back over forty years. She bore her terrible suffering with patience and fortitude and during her last days was conscious that the end was near and had many times signified her willingness to leave the world where for many years had continued for her nothing but never-ending pain. She was a member of no church but had been early taught the Christian way, and, although unable to attend church for many years, she has lived a Christian life, her preference being the M. E. church. She leaves a husband and eight children, all grown, to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Wednesday afternoon by Rev. J.W. FUNK of the Presbyterian church and Rev. W. EMERSON of the M.E. church and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at No. 8. Those who knew the deceased best fully believe that she now contemplates her husband and children with pitying tenderness from those realms of bliss to which her pure spirit has flown.

Eva GRIGGS

Died at the residence of her parents, 65 Claim St., Miss Eva GRIGGS in the nineteenth year of her age. Her illness was brief and painful, her death triumphant and happy. Miss GRIGGS fell a victim to that dreaded scourge, scarlet fever, and as is quite unusual with that disease, retained her full consciousness to the last moment. An hour or two previous to death the power of speech was seemingly gone, but in her last moments she recovered the use of her vocal organs, and extending a hand to each of her heart broken parents, she asked them separately to promise to meet her in heaven saying “You will come won’t you mamma? and you too papa?” When she was told that the other children could not come into the room for fear of the disease she said, “Tell them to follow me.” Then with her hands still clasping her parent’s hands, she repeated distinctly and slowly The Lord’s Prayer, knowing well doubtless the import of the sentence, “Thy will be done.” The writer, who was present, repeated to her the beautiful words of comfort: Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” And the dying lips echoed “comfort me.” As the morning sun threw its first bright rays across the bed where she was lying her happy spirit released from its frail body had passed into the light that streams from the throne of God to go no more out forever. Funeral at the residence Friday, April 3d, at 10a.m.
